You must listen.

00:00:31.480 --> 00:00:32.460
You must listen.

00:00:36.320 --> 00:00:39.900
Now, here is the Podcast Metalheads Podcast.

00:00:41.160 --> 00:00:42.680
Hello and welcome to the Metalheads Podcast.

00:00:43.040 --> 00:00:43.660
My name is George.

00:00:44.360 --> 00:00:44.960
This is Jay.

00:00:45.560 --> 00:00:47.000
This is Brew Metal Will.

00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:48.320
This is John.

00:00:48.860 --> 00:00:49.500
This is Matt.

00:00:50.100 --> 00:00:51.020
This is Moccasan.

00:00:51.460 --> 00:00:54.000
And this is our first episode of 2020.

00:00:54.800 --> 00:00:55.560
Welcome back, gents.

00:00:56.980 --> 00:01:24.140
How's everybody? Well, I'm kicking it off by starting a new segment. It's called T-shirt check. We're always wearing metal T-shirts when we get together, but nobody gets to see them. So, Marcus, what are you wearing? Who are you wearing tonight? I'm wearing a Night Demon shirt. George? Our own Metal Heads podcast. Metal Heads podcast? There's Metal Heads, yeah. A Prog Power shirt that I found on the back of my door. Matt?

00:01:50.860 --> 00:01:53.320
I can't see it. I may have that one.

00:01:53.420 --> 00:02:22.120
I do not have it. This was on the latest tour. What are you wearing, Will? Well, no, Jay is right. I'm wearing a minor league baseball Tulsa Drill is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. But earlier today, I was wearing my Conan tour shirt where they stopped at Atlas. And then when I had to go to my daughter's basketball game, I'm not sure what possessed me, but I decided to change my shirt because they all think I'm a heathen anyway. And they're all they're all religious folks that go to church.

00:02:22.300 --> 00:02:50.940
And my family and my daughter, the weird ones, not the weird ones, we're actually the normal ones who don't go to church. So I'm like, you know, I'm just going to put on a T-shirt that has a mildly good spot. So you had bloody nipples too. Yes. Here comes the heretics. But forgive me, I interrupted George, who was about to say, how's you doing, gents? No, I'm good. What? How bloody are your nipples? Very.

00:02:56.120 --> 00:03:22.060
So John, after our year-end episode, did a lot of number crunching and came up with some more info and data. And I was wondering if John would like to talk about that. Yeah, I won't take too much time, but we kind of wanted to know what countries and what record labels seem to dominate our lists.

00:03:22.320 --> 00:03:26.500
So I just put some numbers together and I'll go through it real quick and

00:03:26.940 --> 00:03:30.040
we can talk about as much as you want or we don't have to talk about it at all but

00:03:31.020 --> 00:03:34.460
and I sent it to everybody so they could see it beforehand just so you have an idea but

00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:40.540
our top country outside the United States because that would be kind of obvious

00:03:40.880 --> 00:03:47.600
seeing it's so much stuff comes out in the United States believe it or not is a shocker it was Sweden so

00:03:48.620 --> 00:03:52.280
which I don't think anyone's surprised by it's not a surprise at all is it

00:03:52.280 --> 00:04:22.260
I mean, you know, it could have been, in other years, it could be Norway or Germany or whatever, but that wasn't a surprise. If you want to get super statistical, and John, I know you love statistics, you should do it, like, per capita, populace. Ooh. Like, does Sweden just traditionally put out more awesome records per capita than any other country in the world? Well, awesome records, that's difficult for awesome records. Sorry, John, go ahead. No, I was just going to say, I think that's kind of across the

00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:27.440
I mean they they are they're a big rock country they're big prog country and

00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:32.940
they're obviously a huge metal country so I think well yeah they they may be at the top of that list

00:04:33.720 --> 00:04:39.020
you know given their population size there's a site say so what does that say about Finland yeah who

00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:44.440
actually does have more metal bands per per capita than any other band I know what it says about

00:04:44.460 --> 00:04:49.040
they just all suck except no no no it says this there's not as many people in Finland

00:04:50.520 --> 00:05:19.020
Which is, I'm sure, true. It has to be. Yeah, yeah. So per capita, you know, you can get away with that. So what I did when I looked at this, Will's right, yeah, I do like statistics. That's probably because I've only worked in that field for 25 years. Only. Yeah, only 25 years. Just. Just. What I looked at is the number of actual times an album showed up distinctly, which would be

00:05:19.060 --> 00:05:48.680
One, you can only have an album once that exists once, but how many times did it show up on our list? And two. And Sweden, outside of the United States, had both. There was nine actual albums that we had, different albums from, or bands from Sweden, and they showed up 19 times on our list. So I thought that was kind of cool. I expected it, but I didn't think it would be as large as it was. And just real quick, running it down, you know, Germany, Norway, France. Can you quickly isolate what John just said? I didn't expect it to be as large as it was.

00:05:50.620 --> 00:05:51.220
We'll do.

00:05:51.540 --> 00:05:55.940
Well, like a trooper, I jumped on in and just did my thing.

00:05:56.900 --> 00:05:58.060
Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom.

00:05:58.320 --> 00:05:59.120
No questions asked.

00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:01.060
You were like, hey, you get what you pay for.

00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:02.260
Yeah.

00:06:02.780 --> 00:06:03.540
Oh, I pay, Jay.

00:06:06.680 --> 00:06:07.600
But anyway, just real quick.

00:06:08.560 --> 00:06:12.680
Our top countries were Sweden, Germany, Norway, France.

00:06:13.760 --> 00:06:15.620
Probably because of me, I think, because I had.

00:06:16.020 --> 00:06:16.840
It is because of you.

00:06:16.860 --> 00:06:17.720
Yeah, you didn't pay grants.

00:06:18.200 --> 00:06:47.700
What the? Which, well, yeah, you know, there's more metal bands coming out of France these days, which is surprising. It is true. You've got Gojira, you've got Dirge, and probably a whole bunch of other ones. There's a lot. No, they're from Finland. Oh, there you go again. By way of Spain. Yeah, surprisingly, Spain made our list, but they were at the bottom of the top nine. I usually have a lot of Spanish bands. I know I do.

00:06:47.780 --> 00:07:17.200
last year and this year. And this year too, yeah. So what I did is I came up with a few things about us individually. The most international person on the podcast was Will. He had albums from 16 different countries. Jesus, so diverse. Very diverse. The America Fuck Yeah Award went to Jay, who has only 10 distinct countries. I would share. Which I kind of found funny.

00:07:17.780 --> 00:07:47.580
I was like not that it was you Jay just that we have an award called America Fuck Yeah. So that 39 of them were from the United States and the other one. So when I see you when I see you in Philly Jay I'm going to just shout America Fuck Yeah. America Fuck Yeah. Well I mean I'm the one who works in Berkeley I should be the most diverse. I feel like I'm a blonde. But Matt when you yell America Fuck Yeah it's going to have to be all kind of jaughty and like jumpy you know like the movie so.

00:07:47.800 --> 00:08:16.220
Oh yeah. I'll do like a, like a jumping jack in the air. Yeah. Like a, some seventies Starsky and Hutch music going on. A little closer. Do you guys know the movie? I love this. I love the sign. You remember the sign, right? You have to give the sign. If it's, if he's in danger. Remember that? Yeah. I keep thinking about Apollo Creed and Rocky. Yeah. Uh, so, uh, real quick, um,

00:08:17.820 --> 00:08:45.120
that dominated our list outside the United States. Let's see. George J. Will. Sweden was their number one. Let's see. Matt couldn't decide. So he just went with Canada, Norway, and Sweden. Perfect. Let's see. Marcus, I really couldn't decide. So he went with England, France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. Which was two albums in each one. And mine was, of course, as we mentioned, France, which apparently I was the only one. So good enough, though. Oui, oui.

00:08:50.080 --> 00:09:17.700
Oh, yeah. Our record label, Big Shocker, our favorite record label outside of independent or self-released was 20 Buck Spin, which dominated all of our lists. So I have to say, I think this is one of the more interesting parts of, aside from obviously the countries, but the record label, because I never really thought about that. Like, you know, you always hear about Metal Blade, Nuclear Blast, 20 Buck Spin, and Dark Descent, but you never really thought that, hey, this one record label really,

00:09:17.780 --> 00:09:21.320
puts out good stuff or this record label always puts out

00:09:22.380 --> 00:09:25.700
subpar stuff that I'm just not interested in. Or Will just puts out.

00:09:27.320 --> 00:09:32.000
I actually lobbied for that one because I thought it was really interesting to find out

00:09:32.060 --> 00:09:36.400
what are these record labels that put out awesome music? Should I be paying more attention to them?

00:09:36.900 --> 00:09:45.400
Are there record labels that have put out a couple good albums and they're smaller and maybe I need to pay attention to those and see what they do next year or the year after?

00:09:45.480 --> 00:10:15.300
But there's some insight there too, though, because I think I'll... John has kindly not pointed out yet that I think I had more Nuclear Blast than anything else. And that makes sense with me, because I tend to be slightly more on the nostalgic side sometimes. And Nuclear Blast is a total nostalgia label at this point. I mean, they got a lot of new stuff, but you know what I mean? Like, they pick up all the other homeless bands, like Slayer and all these guys. Yeah, but, you know, to go along with that, Jay, I think also you have to factor in certain labels specialized in specific types of metal, like Dark Descent for the most part.

00:10:15.480 --> 00:10:44.460
is a death metal label. Most of their bands are, even though Crip Sermons is on that label. Also, 20 Buck Spin two years ago was only putting out how many albums? They were focusing on five or six albums for the year and doing just top quality stuff. We had 11 different albums this year from them on our list. But it does not seem like the quality has dropped off. Not at all. I think that speaks volumes for them. So we completely interrupted everything you were doing, John.

00:10:44.700 --> 00:11:14.620
Oh, I don't care. Yeah. I mean, just real quick, you know, 20 bucks spin, seize the mist, nuclear blast, like Jay said, metal blade, prophecy productions, which I think half of those are mine. Um, profound lore, uh, Gilland is a Gilland media. Yeah. Markisan had a lot from them. Dark descent, uh, relapse and napalm. Was there no prosthetic records on our, well, there were, but these are just the top ones, but they didn't have. Okay. But even so,

00:11:14.700 --> 00:11:44.380
That's a big list you just mentioned. They didn't even show up there. And I did find it interesting that for each of us, for whatever reasons, Jay somehow managed to get a Jay Award for record labels. Because everybody had 20 bucks spent as the label they bought the most or had the most on their list. And Jay went with relapse. I want to know, I'm innovating, John. You guys all classed me with the actual list. So I said, okay,

00:11:44.720 --> 00:12:13.660
to start going into new territory here. Yeah. Anyway, so that's the labels. And then do you guys want me to do the J Awards for this one? Yeah, definitely. Yes. All right. So let's do them real quick. I just in the order I sent them to you guys was in the order they showed up on our final list where the album's finished. So John, just for the uneducated, you should define J Awards. Yes. So the J Awards basically is if there's six of us now.

00:12:14.720 --> 00:12:44.660
In essence, if there's five people who have an album on their list and one person pans it or just doesn't have it, they get a J Award. And this all started because J, who is the band J again that you? Oh, the chemists. Yes. I really, I just want to get out there right now and say I really hope they put a record out next year. Well, J, I think this year is going to be your year. And so we've always had a good laugh about that, about who's going to be the person that's not going to have something on their list.

00:12:44.720 --> 00:13:14.680
list when everybody else has it on there. So this year we actually had way more than I thought we would. So I'll just run down them real quick. Cattle Decapitation, Death Atlas, everybody had this on their list. For the most part it was pretty high outside of Will. He had it down at 23, but everyone else had it in their top 10 and I got the J Award for it. I did not have it on my list at all. The next one was Vastum. I'm not even going to attempt to say the name of the album, but I think everybody probably

00:13:14.720 --> 00:13:44.640
Or official. Yeah. Not official. Yes, exactly. Again, another album that really did well on our list in the top, what, five, I think, for almost everybody. Will had it down, or Jay had it down around 25. I got my second Jay Award. Oh, nice. You did not have it. No. Hey, don't worry. There's more coming. You know, John, if one of us torpedoes,

00:13:44.700 --> 00:14:14.000
and you don't put it on at all. I'm going to call that the primary assist award, like a hockey thing. Yeah. Well, Jay, you almost got an assist when you put something down at like 39 or 40 or something like that. It just squeaked on a list. I think it screwed somebody. So. Oh, yeah, we're getting to that. So the next was Niles album. And everybody had that pretty high again. I think Marcus had it the lowest. No, Matt had it the lowest down at 34. But I picked up my third Jay award.

00:14:20.180 --> 00:14:43.480
That's a real J-Award. When you torpedo somebody's number one, you're going, that's class. A lot of my number ones have been torpedoed in the past. Wait a minute. There were several this time. Crowhurst, as a matter of example, wasn't on my list. Well, my number one wasn't on anybody's list. Yeah, exactly. I have to say. I know the feeling, Marcus.

00:14:44.680 --> 00:15:14.440
I went back and listened to Atlantean Codex again. Yes. Just kick the dude while he's on the ground. Yeah, you know, I tried to listen to Funeral Fuck. Pretty awful. Claws are coming out. And it's not even me this time. All right, let's get to other people getting,

00:15:14.540 --> 00:15:43.380
J awards like maybe this album, Kulta Luna. We all had this. I had this the highest, but everyone had a kind of mid-range on their list. George did not have it on his list, so he got his first J award this year. Thank you. Thank you very much. I'd like to thank the Academy. Yes. Now, J, we're going to get to you to screw in someone here. That's good. Yeah. This is the game. Hasn't happened in 20 years. Deserted. Everyone had this on their list. J just snuck it in at the last second.

00:15:43.880 --> 00:15:44.720
At 39.

00:15:46.540 --> 00:15:47.860
That's the last time Jay got laid.

00:15:48.020 --> 00:15:48.560
At 39.

00:15:49.240 --> 00:15:49.600
Amazing.

00:15:49.840 --> 00:15:50.240
Who said that?

00:15:50.980 --> 00:15:51.960
And he just snuck it in.

00:15:52.010 --> 00:15:52.740
You shouldn't even notice.

00:15:54.520 --> 00:15:55.220
It's just a tip.

00:15:57.080 --> 00:15:58.620
And that gave Will a Jay award.

00:15:59.720 --> 00:16:00.680
And then the last one.

00:16:00.760 --> 00:16:01.320
Wait, which one?

00:16:01.940 --> 00:16:02.800
For Gay Creeper.

00:16:03.080 --> 00:16:03.560
Gay Creeper.

00:16:04.560 --> 00:16:10.540
Yeah, I have to say, like, when I said this before, when I read the Death Bowl article,

00:16:10.670 --> 00:16:12.380
I thought, like, this is going to be awesome.

00:16:12.560 --> 00:16:42.160
This is going to be death leprosy. I want to hear this in a stadium. This is going to be great. And when I listen to it, I'm just like, I don't see the appeal of this album whatsoever. You set yourself up there, man. Remember the piece point two. Here we go. You might want to temper those, you know, feelings for the expectations next time. Are we going to interview them next week, next month? No.

00:16:44.339 --> 00:17:12.520
I'm actually surprised by that from Will. I think that the expectations are really high for that album and maybe it didn't quite reach that but I think it's still really a good album. I agree. I throw it on the car and that's really good there for some reason. I really enjoyed it in a vehicle. But I guess for me when I compare it to Tumult, Vastum, God all the other number of

00:17:12.540 --> 00:17:41.980
some death metal albums that came out that I had on my list. Like, it just is sort of like, it was kind of vanilla. I don't know. It just didn't, it literally, I wanted to love this so much after reading that decibel article. And trust me, I was crushed when I was like, I just can't get behind this. Like, I just did it. And it's not that it's not, I'm not saying it's bad. Just, it didn't connect with me. Did not connect with me at all. I shouldn't say at all. Just so much other stuff. I can't find the same space.

00:17:43.580 --> 00:18:11.800
That last year, who had their record? Asuarium Silhouettes on Hallowed. Who is that? That's the album. Asuarium was this year. No, Hooded Menace. Hooded Menace. It sits in a Hooded Menace place. And when there's other stuff coming out, it's like Hooded Menace is cool if it's like nothing else came out good that month. But then all this other great shit comes on and just gets lost in the fog. And I think that's kind of what happened. Yeah. And I have to say,

00:18:12.080 --> 00:18:41.160
I said this on the year-end episode where Vastum came out at the same time as Gatecreeper. I'm like, Vastum is so much better of an album. Like, Immortiforum came out. Like, all these other death metal bands. And I have to say this, that I, we've talked about this before, I'm slightly biased because I saw Two Mold multiple times at Atlas. I saw Immortiforum at Atlas. Like, I saw some of these other bands at Atlas, and that does, like,

00:18:42.060 --> 00:19:11.720
It just sparks like a different energy with the album. See them live. We agree with you as far as death metal goes like most of us had those albums higher than gate creeper. So I'm just surprised that you don't like gate creeper at all. I'm not saying I don't like it just it didn't resonate with me it didn't it didn't it didn't resonate with me enough to make my list. Right. You didn't think it was bad. It's just not. Yeah you know it wasn't bad. I never said it was bad it just didn't resonate with me.

00:19:12.080 --> 00:19:40.220
We all have our own preferences, right? You've got a gate. It didn't creep. Or you're a creep and you couldn't find the gate. That's because he's well-oiled. So the last album was Pelican Nighttime Stories. We all had it on our list, but all of us had it down low. George still doesn't get it, so George gets a J Award.

00:19:42.760 --> 00:20:12.000
I had three, George had two, and Will had one. And we surprisingly had three albums that were on everybody's list. They also just happened to be our top three albums, which was Tumult, Blood Incantation, and Crip Sermon, their albums. So that's it for the stats. I think really the summation of all that is that we fucking rule. Well, you know what? That's a solid top three, and it doesn't really mirror. It's kind of kind across all of our lists. It takes into account every list.

00:20:12.060 --> 00:20:41.880
That obviously statistically does, but what I mean is, there's times when we've had a number one, and I was like, eh, I didn't love it. I wish it wasn't number one. But all of those three records are great, you know? Wait, so it's Crip Sermon, Two Mold, and Blood Incantation? Yeah. Yeah, those are three, but... I mean, I'm assuming you could live with that, Will. Oh, yeah, clearly, yeah. I had them all in my top five or six. But I'll be honest, our top ten could match any of these big sites,

00:20:43.800 --> 00:21:12.040
Our list is better than anybody else's, period. Our sample size is getting larger, too. We've got six guys now, and the averages are working out real nice. Our top 40 is way better than any other top 40 I've seen. Every set I've looked at, I'm like, okay, yep, yep, yep. Trash. Yeah, I know. And then it just gets worse from there. We are not like that. You know what's funny? Every year, we see

00:21:14.860 --> 00:21:41.760
I think they end up having just about at least I think better lists than most of these publications. They do and that is true. Of the big publication, Decibel by far has the best list because they don't pander to the record labels that much. I would think that Decibel doesn't have enough integrity. They're not pandering to record labels but they're sometimes like they're number two this year like I'm scratching my head like what?

00:21:42.060 --> 00:22:10.620
What in the fuck are you thinking? Is that a linguine woman? As Albert points out, he knows it's going to be controversial. It's not controversial, it's just wrong. It's garbage. I'm sorry. The funny thing is, I've seen that on a number of different lists. You know what that album is? Caligula or whatever it is. Do you guys remember last year, Daughters was showing up on half the lists out there? And I was like, what? Why? It's not even metal.

00:22:12.060 --> 00:22:41.560
That's the daughters of this year. I would say the two bands I saw everywhere were Devil Master and Idle Hands. And while I didn't know. You had Idle Hands like 40, right? I had, yeah, at 40. And I did not have Devil Master on my list. I saw those everywhere. But there was no list that was like, like maybe say it's out of 20. You know, we'd start at 20 and we start working our way down. And by like number 12, you would totally lose me. And it would just get worse all the way up to number one.

00:22:42.080 --> 00:23:12.040
I saw blood incantation on a lot of lists. Two mole less so. Yeah. I think. I can't remember how cattle decapitation fared. I think they were probably. It's a 50 50 50. I think I saw it on half the list I looked at. I saw cattle decapitation on a lot of lists, but it wasn't high. Yeah. It was like mid range, you know. Yeah. Yeah. Strangely enough, at some point, I felt like

00:23:12.080 --> 00:23:40.780
Pitchfork was our best chance at this because they had Blood Incantation. I don't remember what their list looked like off the top of my head, but it got way in the hipster genre. You know who had the worst list? Bandcamp's Top 100. They had two metal albums in their Top 100. Is it based on sales? I don't know, but I find that... What were those two albums? I don't even remember now.

00:23:42.060 --> 00:24:12.000
was Tumult. And I can't remember what the other one was. I was like shocked. I thought they're at least, I get it, they have to cater to all music. I thought they'd at least be about five or six, maybe seven out of a hundred. Considering metal is keeping a place in business. Yes. Yeah. Because don't they say, well, I know, I know it's Spotify has the most loyal, metal is the most loyal listeners. What about Bandcamp? I'm guessing that Bandcamp does very well for metal listeners. Yes. Should. That's my, my,

00:24:12.060 --> 00:24:42.020
I would assume. I mean, maybe we all live in a bubble, but. Yeah. Well, I see all these labels on there, and a majority of them are metal labels. Maybe we are in a bubble, like you said, Jay. Do we know anybody from Bandcamp? I met one guy once who came to Atlas. Is it in there? Is it on the East Coast? I have no idea. I thought it was West Coast, but. They opened up a place, I thought, in your area, Jay. Maybe you're right. Go ahead. We all are not looking up.

00:24:43.220 --> 00:25:12.040
Yeah, he came from band camp. Some guy showed up at Atlas and he said he was from band camp. And it's like at the same time I wanted to hug him and I wanted to punch him. Because my email, what I bitched about is the number of emails I get from band camp every day is astronomical to the point that I want to set up a email address that's willbandcamp at gmail.com so I can just ignore all

00:25:12.060 --> 00:25:40.420
most of this shit because I get like 15 emails a day. Because you follow people and stuff. Right. So you follow a record label, you follow whatever. You can change that on Bandcamp. Well, I know. And I've been trying to go through and unclick, like unfollow, unfollow, unfollow. Oh, all those things. Yeah. You should see all the label and PR emails. I mean, I probably get 100 of them a day. Oh, God, George. I can't even imagine.

00:25:42.399 --> 00:26:11.680
Let me inject here real quick and just say John was right. Bandcamp is actually in Oakland. So if I can metal inject, I feel like there's a metal bandcamp. What if I reach out to them? Do we want to just sit and talk with that person? Well, yes, but you know who I was thinking we should get on? The guy for 20 bucks band. Whoever runs that fucking place. That'd be fun. So I'll reach out to the metal bandcamp person.

00:26:11.760 --> 00:26:12.180
regardless.

00:26:14.580 --> 00:26:16.200
I feel like his name is like Dave.

00:26:17.120 --> 00:26:17.300
Maybe.

00:26:18.180 --> 00:26:18.300
Sure.

00:26:18.900 --> 00:26:19.180
Why not?

00:26:19.270 --> 00:26:20.960
I feel like his name is Dave.

00:26:22.080 --> 00:26:23.360
Dave's not here, man.

00:26:24.060 --> 00:26:24.420
Question.

00:26:24.420 --> 00:26:25.000
Dave-ish.

00:26:25.300 --> 00:26:26.180
Scott, Scott, Scott, Scott.

00:26:26.580 --> 00:26:27.480
No, man, it's me, Dave.

00:26:28.620 --> 00:26:30.620
By the way, speaking of 20 bucks, Ben.

00:26:30.840 --> 00:26:31.740
I'm Tix McKee.

00:26:31.810 --> 00:26:35.600
You know, the highest things on our list.

00:26:35.840 --> 00:26:40.300
Tumul did actually respond to me finally and said, we'll check with the guys.

00:26:40.880 --> 00:27:09.880
Did you say at that point you were very moldy? Maybe we'll get them on by the next album. Well, it's going to be out in two months. Yeah, their albums come out pretty fast. I think they're taking this year off. I think so. The whole year, really? By the way, just real quick, talk about taking a year off. Blood Incantation is playing two shows total this whole year, and they're in New York only. So what was the reasoning behind that? Are they working on the NARPS record or something? No, I think actually they're working on Spectral Voice.

00:27:10.880 --> 00:27:40.000
I saw Blood Incantation with, was it in the Cannibal Corpse tour? Yeah. Like towards the end of the year. Yeah. That's it. Yeah. Oh, that's right. Sorry. I mean, they'll probably make more money off the like four or five festivals they play in Europe than they would the whole year touring the States. Them and As I Lay Dying. Yeah. Well, I love these statistics, John. Thanks for doing those.

00:27:41.560 --> 00:28:10.760
Enjoy that Will is an international man of mystery and you are way more Jay than Jay. Speaking of international. He's way more Jay than Jay with all his French picks. Do we want. A better irony really quick though. And that the first year of the Jay Awards I pulled a Jay by not getting any of the Jay Awards. Yeah. I think that's right there. I also learned that I'm really nice. I'm not even on the Jay Awards at all.

00:28:10.860 --> 00:28:40.820
I don't know what Matt didn't have any. I don't think. I think Matt had some. My big one was King Goat. You're a shit that no one like you're not. Yeah. When you're making it up, it doesn't matter. Yeah, exactly. Pitching Matt dot com. Oh, can I? I'm going to give one more stat that I noticed when I was looking at the website. And this is pretty cool, actually. It's a landmark stat that John didn't cover. This year, John and Matt are celebrating 40 years.

00:28:40.900 --> 00:29:10.580
years of being metalheads. Congrats. Yes, thank you. You realize Matt's like 40. 41. When I came out, I had the horns going. Nice. Hey, since we're doing stats and speaking of international things, do you want me to run through the top countries that listened to the podcast in the last 12 months?

00:29:10.860 --> 00:29:40.420
Yeah, I'm down with that. No, I have up to 50. How many do we want to do? San Marino, Lesotho, Swaziland, Liechtenstein. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It gets pretty deep. Let's do 20 just because it's interesting. Oh, the far eastern. Because like the top three are like, you know, number one is Russia. That guy on the oil, Derek. Yeah, Matt, because they're bootlegging it. Yeah. All right. So number 20 is Argentina. Nice. 19 is Switzerland.

00:29:40.880 --> 00:30:09.600
Do we have numbers for these? Is it like one? Like Argentina has two listeners. No, it's more than that. Number 18 is United Arab Emirates. 17 is France. France. All those people that are like, oh, John, we love you. John, you like your wee wee. Number 16. Number 16 is Indonesia. Number 15, Peru.

00:30:10.880 --> 00:30:40.820
14, the Netherlands, 13, Finland. All of those were Yanni, I'm sure. Number 12, the Russian Federation. Number 11, New Zealand. Into the top 10, we've got Sweden. Number 9, Spain, not Greece. Number 8, Brazil. Number 7, Norway. Number 6, Russia.

00:30:41.780 --> 00:31:10.160
Oh, huh. Number five, Germany. Number four, Mexico. Number three, Australia. Number two, Canada. Number one, the UK. United States is technically number one. I left that off because that's obvious. It's like by far the number one, but so UK. Nice. So Mexico is number three? Four. Quatro. All right. Quatro? Quatro. I know some Romanians,

00:31:10.220 --> 00:31:11.360
So maybe that helps.

00:31:11.940 --> 00:31:13.380
Maybe that Romanian language.

00:31:14.300 --> 00:31:16.180
That just sounds like a really bad movie line.

00:31:16.820 --> 00:31:20.920
Is the closest language to what ancient language?

00:31:21.860 --> 00:31:22.360
Arama.

00:31:23.600 --> 00:31:23.820
Latin.

00:31:24.899 --> 00:31:25.460
Elvish.

00:31:26.500 --> 00:31:35.300
By the way, speaking of Romania too, I want to recommend to you guys, you guys, or the listeners if they care, to watch the Dracula series on Netflix.

00:31:35.440 --> 00:31:36.240
It's fucking cool, man.

00:31:36.340 --> 00:31:39.260
I watched the trailer and it didn't suck me in.

00:31:39.340 --> 00:32:09.280
But I have to say that I went to the... So I've been to Romania, and I went to the town of Sigishwara, which is in Transylvania. And in the town of Sigishwara, you can go to the birthplace of Vlad Tepes, which is the... He may be the... Where the legend of Dracula is based upon, or his father is based upon. But in that tavern... So they turned his birthplace into a tavern.

00:32:09.340 --> 00:32:39.220
You can have tapas with tapas. Yes. And I remember you can get a in 1998 when I was there traveling around. You could get a beer for 40 cents. You did all of that to tell us where we can get cheap beer. Yes. I'm sure by now. Probably a dollar. By now. You know, 12 years later. It's going to be like some cool Dracula fact. You like it. No, no. 20. As long as you want to spend six grand to get.

00:32:39.320 --> 00:33:09.300
there. Hey, Will, when you were describing that, it made me think of living in, George would know this too, living in like Virginia. Everywhere you go in Virginia, well, George Washington slept here. Apparently he slept everywhere in Virginia. Factoid, George Washington slept around. That's how the news would spin it. I actually just watched John Adams again too, man. The guy who plays Washington in that is

00:33:09.380 --> 00:33:39.200
He was in that show St. Elsewhere. That's the thing I remember him from. The guy who played John Adams is Paul Giamatti. He is awesome. Yeah, no, but the guy that played Washington, that was like Morris something. Yeah, David Morris. David Morris, yeah. Yeah, but let's be honest, Paul Giamatti's best line ever is nobody's drinking fucking Merlot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or you are the motherfucking Antichrist. What movie is that from? That's from the Howard Stern.

00:33:40.360 --> 00:34:08.560
Oh, that's right. That's such a weird part for him. You guys are going to need to watch Billions. Actually, Will, you got to go to the credits. How about that, folks? Howard fucking Stern. That's his other good line from the movie. Isn't that funny to think he was in that? That was before he was really known, you know, like the guy he became. He played pig virus. Seriously, watch Billionese. Yeah, I saw the first season. What's it on? Showtime.

00:34:10.760 --> 00:34:38.240
I love him. I think he's great. He's good. We are moving right along here. We haven't even gotten to anything yet. I was all like, Barb, it's going to be a short episode because we don't have a guest today. We're still at least an hour before the guest was done. We're doing all right. We only have one, two, three more items before we get to the news. I'm sure we'll hit that by midnight, right?

00:34:40.300 --> 00:35:09.260
All right, so next up, we just wanted to point out that it's about three months until Decibel Philly. Literally just booked a plane ticket like an hour ago. Okay, well, I need to get on that. Now, when are you arriving? Because I wanted to talk about 2.30. Oh, really? 2.30 on which day? Thursday. I fly outside at like eight. Hey, Will, did you already get your tickets for the Phillies game? Because I was going to think we're not the Phillies.

00:35:09.340 --> 00:35:38.980
game, but the Flyers game? Well, so good thing you pointed out because I'm originally from Philadelphia area. And so not only are the Flyers playing, which I wanted to buy tickets to, but also the Phillies are playing that weekend at home. It's opening day weekend. So when Matt says he's not coming in till late on Thursday, I'm 2 or 6 p.m. Yeah, I'm thinking I'm golden. We're not doing this 100 episode.

00:35:39.320 --> 00:35:41.380
We're totally going to the Flyers

00:35:41.440 --> 00:35:42.060
of the Phillies game.

00:35:42.400 --> 00:35:44.220
Yeah, I think that's not happening.

00:35:44.660 --> 00:35:47.660
Whichever one is chosen, I would love to go to the game.

00:35:48.760 --> 00:35:50.660
And I would opt for baseball, but I would buy.

00:35:51.559 --> 00:35:52.620
I'm getting in Wednesday.

00:35:54.200 --> 00:35:55.720
So I might shoot for Wednesday, too, then.

00:35:57.000 --> 00:35:57.880
Well, I was going to try.

00:35:58.860 --> 00:36:02.880
It's a moot point now, but I was going to shoot to get to Philly

00:36:03.110 --> 00:36:06.639
like Thursday morning so that we could like maybe start doing a thing

00:36:06.660 --> 00:36:36.300
at like noon and finish maybe around the time that Will wanted to go out. But yeah, we're not doing that. So what are we doing? I can start at 3 p.m. I'm sorry? I'm going to shoot. I will. I didn't buy my ticket yet, so I'll do Thursday too. I'll come on Thursday. I don't know what to do now. I want to go to Monk's.

00:36:37.120 --> 00:36:37.520
Yeah.

00:36:38.160 --> 00:36:38.240
Yeah.

00:36:40.660 --> 00:36:45.640
I guess the other question is, should we do it Sunday instead of Thursday?

00:36:48.460 --> 00:36:49.680
I leave at 8 a.m.

00:36:50.180 --> 00:36:50.280
Yeah.

00:36:51.980 --> 00:36:52.660
Bitchy, Matt.

00:36:55.140 --> 00:36:55.220
Yeah.

00:36:55.840 --> 00:36:58.320
It could also happen Saturday or something.

00:36:58.560 --> 00:37:01.620
Where are we going to do it Sunday, by the way, if everyone has to check out of the hotel?

00:37:02.340 --> 00:37:02.440
Yeah.

00:37:02.740 --> 00:37:04.760
What about Saturday or Friday?

00:37:04.820 --> 00:37:34.720
I mean, that can't be undoable. But also, you know, hey, I have to tell you, the lineup's not that amazing this year, you know. No. But, well, we'll figure it out. But in any case, since so many of you are shooting in on Thursday, I will either do that or Wednesday, depending on which one is slightly cheaper. Especially since Pakistan's getting there Wednesday. Well, actually, I guess I'm leaving Wednesday, but I'll probably get there Thursday. Think about it. But I'll be there in the morning. Oh, that's right. You're coming from far away. Maybe this should be Peaceman.

00:37:34.860 --> 00:38:03.660
and we do just portions of it at a time. That could be kind of funny. Like we'll start out sober for like 10 of them and then we'll roll into like the last 10 and everyone will just be blasted or they'll be drunk like for the first 10 or something. It could be kind of funny the difference. I like this. I kind of like that idea. Or we just start at midnight and we'd go all night. I could, well I'll tell you what, I will bring mine and we can isolate this podcast on this and the other podcast on George's. We'll just need a lot of cocaine.

00:38:06.060 --> 00:38:34.200
The only thing I ask is that we don't do it anywhere near the room I'm sleeping in. God, I'm so glad I didn't bring my own pillow. Well, they're going to have to burn this. Well, in any case, well, okay, we'll start those details out. I'm going to come in with a hazard suit and like a holster with Febreze in them.

00:38:34.800 --> 00:39:04.660
I'm going to look like I live in Beijing. I'll have a mask on the whole time. Yeah. So anyway, if you're thinking about going, you should probably think about it harder and get a ticket now. And maybe you'll see us there. I think John BT is going. And I think I would guess Jeff Gresham is probably going. He went to Los Angeles this year, by the way, without us. So I bet you we'll see. Is TR going, do you think, Joe? I believe he is coming in for one day.

00:39:04.800 --> 00:39:34.760
for some band he wants to see. Is Magic Circle playing? Yeah. Yeah, he'll come when every day Magic Circle is playing. He likes them. So he'll have a little crowd. Is it going to be the same hotel? By the way, the Sheraton is now a Marriott. Yeah. So the Sheraton, the Sheraton Society in Philadelphia that we always stay in, is now a Marriott. John's happy about that. I wonder if it was the location that Albert...

00:39:34.800 --> 00:40:03.500
We also do an Airbnb, guys. Get a house. Marriott bought Sheridan. Yeah, exactly. Marriott bought Sheridan. They bought them four years ago. So did people, none of you guys have booked a hotel yet, have you? I have. No, I booked it back in September. Oh, wow. So you're at the Marriott then, Matt? The Society Hill one, same as last year. I literally booked it the week it was available, first week. It's so much cheaper that way. Yes, it is. Okay, noted. Because I was going to say, I could shop for a house for us, but.

00:40:06.200 --> 00:40:34.360
Jay, get a boat that Will can bleed on. Fuck yeah. You know what we need this time is a boat that we can undock. Did you just do the, I ain't got time to bleed? I ain't got time to bleed. I only just now washed my jacket, by the way, that had Will blood on it for a year. Jay, I've never watched the knife that you used to cut the flesh off my elbow. Oh, wait, wait. Did I tell this story already? That, um, so,

00:40:36.180 --> 00:41:04.420
Literally about two months ago, James Lewis, who we all love and adore from Decibel, he's the sales guy for Decibel and does so much more there. But him and I were texting back and forth. He's like, hey, man, I'm not sure. I feel so bad saying this, but I think I was the one who pushed you down and busted your elbow open in her arm. And I feel really bad about that. I was like,

00:41:04.880 --> 00:41:34.700
Are you fucking serious? But I mean, also, I feel bad that he's still thinking about that. He is a nice guy. Why were you thinking about that? Oh, my God. Like, I have no idea. It's like a badge of honor. I knocked Will down. Yeah. I can't wait to see him next time. I am kind of almost twice his size. Actually, you know what? When we see him, though, we should all be like, hey, man, be cool. Hey, man. Actually, it was like sweet. Yeah. Dare I say that? At the same time,

00:41:34.800 --> 00:42:04.600
It was just like hysterical. Like, really, dude? Like, you're really worried about knocking me over in a mosh pit and bust my elbow open because it's just, it's metal, dude. But also, he strikes me as that nice of a guy, dude. He is the nicest guy. I love that guy. And hopefully, we will see him on January 25th. Yes. Is he out by you guys or does he live in Philly? No, no. He lives in Northern Virginia. Now, I just got to point this out, Will. Adroit Theory.

00:42:04.800 --> 00:42:34.440
And Arma, watch your elbows. If he's there. James comes, good point, yeah. Can someone please send me a pic of Will Sweeping? Yes. I'm sure I will be doing that. Please. So for those uninitiated on, so this year again, so last year for the fifth anniversary, the Joint Theory Brewing Company in Percival, Virginia, their fifth anniversary, they decide to have a metal show.

00:42:35.500 --> 00:42:37.560
with their beer festival.

00:42:39.440 --> 00:42:47.980
So last year, Mark Osborne, who's the owner of a Joy Theater, who actually listens to this podcast occasionally, he asked me to help book the show.

00:42:48.510 --> 00:42:51.320
So this year, he asked me again to book the show.

00:42:51.470 --> 00:43:04.720
So I booked Inter Arma, Ilsa, Basilisk from Philly, and Sick Deer, which is a great black metal band that was on my list that you guys should.

00:43:04.780 --> 00:43:11.880
be all on your hey i missed it in 2020 or 2019 list it's like you jade your own list

00:43:14.299 --> 00:43:21.320
anyway so so i booked the show again so saturday january 25th in percival virginia which is an

00:43:21.700 --> 00:43:27.780
absolutely bumfuck nowhere in the northern northern northern part of virginia and only a half hour from my house

00:43:28.480 --> 00:43:33.059
that's right in maryland we're so bumfuck nowhere it's near george's house

00:43:34.460 --> 00:44:02.840
And that's saying something. Yeah. Anyway. It's not like Unabomber or anything. You're talking about Decimal. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. James. James. Know why I went to talk about it? Because James and Albert from Decimal always come to the theory shows. Well, yeah, that was the stream of consciousness. And I'm spent. All right. Let's move on.

00:44:03.080 --> 00:44:32.820
Let's move on. Okay. This. I have to do a public service announcement. If you listen to this. This is my last can of New England Brewing Company. Six. Six. Eight. The neighbor of the beast. Which is compliments of the luch. Nice. So they stopped making this for a while. This beer. Which is like a literally the best Belgian beer.

00:44:33.080 --> 00:45:02.720
I've ever drank out of a can. It is absolutely fucking delicious. They stopped making it for a while and then they started re-canning it, I guess, and distributing it and Looch grabbed some up for me and sent it to me. And so this is my last can and I will reinvigorate brew heads with this. Nice. You brought one of those to one of the ear ends because I've got the cans in right over there. Yeah, it's good. So this is actually weirdly, it's a new can.

00:45:03.300 --> 00:45:08.220
because it's like the aluminum blank can that they put the sticker on.

00:45:08.400 --> 00:45:09.000
Oh, yeah.

00:45:09.500 --> 00:45:10.420
So it's slightly different.

00:45:11.720 --> 00:45:14.120
So if you have one of the old original ones, that's a...

00:45:14.540 --> 00:45:16.260
Was that a mutant baby on the back?

00:45:16.940 --> 00:45:18.220
No, it's just an old guy.

00:45:18.700 --> 00:45:19.980
It's a picture of me.

00:45:21.340 --> 00:45:22.400
Yeah, it's very close.

00:45:23.240 --> 00:45:24.320
He's the neighbor of the beast.

00:45:24.460 --> 00:45:25.240
That's actually pretty funny.

00:45:26.420 --> 00:45:27.840
He's the neighbor of the beast.

00:45:27.840 --> 00:45:29.660
And I like to think that that's the neighbor of the beast.

00:45:29.800 --> 00:45:30.240
That guy.

00:45:30.360 --> 00:46:00.320
He's like, oh, let me get my paper. And there's the neighbor. There's the beast. That's good. Yeah, that's pretty awesome. So thank you, Looch. You're all about numbers today, Will. Yeah. So Spotify sends out this thing once in a while. It says, hey, you know, for podcasters and probably for people too, you know, hey, this is what you listen to or whatever. Well, we get a, hey, this is who listened to you email. And I was just looking through some of the

00:46:00.340 --> 00:46:30.320
stats and we did pretty good on Spotify for our first year given we weren't on Spotify before but one of the stats broke down the listeners by gender and 21% of the Spotify listeners of this podcast were female and I was like that blew my mind because pretty much from day one until now speaking into this microphone I feel like I'm talking to a sausage fest I'm like we're dudes talking to dudes there's no women

00:46:30.360 --> 00:47:00.280
listening to this. Most people who I talk to who listen to this podcast think that we, the six of us, are just a big sausage fest. We are. Which makes sense. Big sausages. Big, very big sausages. We're talking about penises. Well, we all got big dicks. But hey, you know, can I point out something about why that surprises you, George? Because I, and I'm willing to bet this is true, has any of your significant others ever listened to the show? No. No. I told my wife about that.

00:47:02.760 --> 00:47:30.180
You sent out that message, George. I told my wife about that. She's like, well, that was not me. Yeah. So I'm just going to post something. Why don't we just stop right here and just say 21% and move on and just be happy that we got that number because it could go down quickly. Well, I want to know. I want to. It's just an amazing number. It is an amazing number. That's like that's like the I'm not going to go there. I'm not going to know what that number is.

00:47:30.360 --> 00:48:00.280
I'll tell you what that number is. And we'll, this is going to come up more than a couple more times in this podcast, but that number is a number in my last few years seeing Rush. When I saw them earlier, it was all dudes, all my age. When I saw them later, it was all dudes with their wives. That's what that number is. So, you know, in the, in the spirit of this, I decided, you know, we, we have to have more content for the ladies. And so I want,

00:48:00.380 --> 00:48:30.300
I feel so miserably at this. I want to unofficially announce and completely lie that we are going to start a Kickstarter to make a Metalheads podcast 2020 swimsuit calendar for the ladies. No, no, it'll be us. We're going to have Matt on the cover. Matt's going to be on the cover because he's definitely the sexiest. Can we just do a calendar with our cats? Yeah. I thought you were going to make girly t-shirts.

00:48:30.360 --> 00:48:30.920
or something.

00:48:31.960 --> 00:48:32.780
I like this.

00:48:32.920 --> 00:48:34.260
Let's just get right off this idea.

00:48:35.340 --> 00:48:36.480
I have to say Atlas.

00:48:37.960 --> 00:48:41.080
Atlas Brew Works makes a calendar every year.

00:48:41.840 --> 00:48:45.660
And every year there is some sort of ridiculous,

00:48:45.940 --> 00:48:50.180
like sort of like Chippendale aspect to it with the brewers.

00:48:50.520 --> 00:48:51.840
I've never been featured in the calendar.

00:48:52.140 --> 00:48:52.500
Thank God.

00:48:53.660 --> 00:48:55.760
But there's it sells pretty well.

00:48:55.940 --> 00:48:57.760
And they did all the money goes to charity.

00:48:58.200 --> 00:48:58.600
That's awesome.

00:49:00.120 --> 00:49:24.360
It would be funny to do like some sort of like Chris Farley-esque kind of thing and like, you know, just like make it really hilarious and actually make a calendar. But unless you're mad and then it'd be like a Brad Pitt sort of thing. Right. Exactly. The rest of us will just be holding a loaf of bread in a suggestive manner. As in, will you cut this for me? I'm a man and I don't know how.

00:49:28.740 --> 00:49:58.500
All right. Moving on. Markisan wanted to do something about holiday metal gifts. Take it away, buddy. All right. So George just asked for suggestions and I threw that out there. Then all of a sudden now it's my. It is you. Well, I got nothing. So. Yeah. Well, you know, Christmas. Yeah. You didn't get anything metal for Christmas. Huh? Well, you didn't get anything metal for Christmas. No, no, we don't really do it. Oh, you don't really do it either. No.

00:49:58.740 --> 00:50:28.700
We don't do that much either. So I did get Sharks tickets. Yeah. Well, my wife and I don't exchange gifts, but I did get some gifts from other people. I sent stuff to Hawaii. So, yeah, I'll start it off. It's just cool. I always asked for metal gifts and then people just find stuff for me because they know I'm into metal. And I got the No Celebration, the official story of Paradise Lost book. Cool. By David Gilkey from Decimal Books. So I started that. I just started it. Always interesting to peek inside a band's

00:50:28.740 --> 00:50:58.120
career, especially Paradise Lost, who really ended up experimenting with their sound so much. So it's not that long a book, so I should power through it pretty soon. I also got one metal vinyl for Christmas. It happened to be one of my favorite death metal albums from last year, and that is a Nihilism by Vasavus. And I got it on red, dark blue, and silver vinyl, I believe. So it was like number 14 on my top 40.

00:50:58.200 --> 00:51:26.900
So I was hoping to add that to my collection. And the last thing that I got, which is fantastic, and we actually just talked about it a little bit, I got a Metal Cats coloring book. It's a book of metal musicians and their cats based on some book called Metal Cats, which was photographs of different metal musicians. So they just took those photographs and made them into a coloring book that you can, I don't know, it's fun.

00:51:27.000 --> 00:51:56.700
So I've colored a couple of them. Did it come with crayons or did you have some already? What's that? Did it come with crayons or did you have some already? I mean, I have colored pencils and stuff because when I work on comics, sometimes I'll draw stuff out or if I want to try to figure out like color schemes, I have that stuff. So I have a bunch of art supplies and I actually drew a cover for Voracious once. I don't do a lot of art, but I like sketching things out badly and then giving it to my artists. Fair enough.

00:51:56.800 --> 00:52:26.480
So yeah, it's pretty fun, you know, and coloring is pretty therapeutic. You know, you just sit there and yeah, yeah. Cats. Well, petting a cat. Nice. Well, I'm going to jump in next and just say I didn't really get anything, but that's just because I have, I'm at one of those fortunate times in my life when I have a disposable income. So if it's something out there that's metal and I want it, I buy it. Yeah. That stated in December was great because I saw Nile Slayer and King Diamond all in December. So I'll call that Christmas. But I,

00:52:26.780 --> 00:52:54.280
I have a suggested gift which I shared with you guys. I'm going to show it to you now. I got it and it's this Where's Lemmy book which is basically Where's Waldo with Lemmy. And it's dirty too. It's full of people having sex and doing drugs and stuff like that. And somewhere in the middle of it is always Lemmy just sitting there with a cigarette going, it's awesome dude. So I highly suggest the Motorhead Where is Lemmy book. It's just a little picture book. It's awesome. It's a great gift idea.

00:52:56.800 --> 00:53:25.320
Diamond Credo of Christmas. Indeed. No presents for Christmas. Which is? There's no presents. Not for Christmas. Nope. Anybody else get anything cool? I, I, go ahead, John. No, it's fine. I'll wait. I'll go after you. Oh, I got three things. I got the, I got two vinyl records. I got Slayer South of Heaven and Slayer Seasons in the Abyss on vinyl. I just got those in the mail yesterday, Will. Sweet.

00:53:26.800 --> 00:53:56.080
And then I got the Adam Dursky, Nurgle, Conventions of a Heretic book for the elite guy in Behemoth. By the way, that book is really just a long interview. Okay, I haven't read it yet. Probably the absolute most metal thing I got being a retired Marine is I got Mad Dog Manus' book on leadership.

00:53:56.800 --> 00:54:25.740
or chaos something. Call sign chaos. Which is his book. That dude is an absolute motherfucking living legend of the United States Marine Corps. Okay. Not that any of you fucking care. But anyway. Hoorah. Hoorah. But it is funny. Actually I would like to read that. It would be interesting. As Luke Skywalker said in Empire Strikes Back, I care.

00:54:29.480 --> 00:54:56.340
Hey, John, is Anselo set in Empire Stripe X? I know. Well, did I ever tell you that my wife's brother was a Marine? Oh, no, you have not. Tracy's brother? Yeah. What did he do? Do you know? He was a sergeant, but he's retired now. He's an engineer. He was an engineer in the Marine Corps? He's an engineer now? No, he was not an engineer in the Marine Corps.

00:54:56.780 --> 00:55:26.680
He worked at, oh, what do you call those places? Embassies. Oh, it was an MSG, Marine Security Guard. Yeah, he did that for a long time. Yeah, that's cool. And I think he worked on radio stuff as well. Comms guy, communications. Comms, yeah. Cool. I actually got one of the, well, I have something to add real quick. No, no, it's cool. Yeah, it'll only take a second. I got a book from a guy who's not metal, or doesn't,

00:55:26.820 --> 00:55:56.120
I play metal music, but he's probably the most metal person on planet Earth. And I got the book on Keith Richards called Life, and I cannot wait to hear how this guy was just way more badass than all of us will ever be in our lives. The whole book is about, like, how am I still alive? I've got that, too. I haven't read it yet, though. Let me suggest, by the way, that I just watched this great documentary about Bill Wyman from the Rolling Stones. Saw it on a plane. Wasn't it great?

00:55:56.580 --> 00:56:26.440
Yeah, it was. I kind of fell in love with him a little bit. I mean, he was, it's called The Quiet One. The Quiet One. And he's, it says The Quiet Stone and then they cancel the ST. Yeah. And it's called The Quiet One, which is weird, by the way, because that's what they used to call John Entwistle. So it's weird that that's what they called it. But in any case, and it's just about his life and he's this big collector. He's an archivist and he archived everything about the Rolling Stones and his own life and all this stuff. I cannot recommend this movie enough. I was so entertained by it. That's strange considering I've never seen Charlie Watts once ever say a word.

00:56:26.800 --> 00:56:55.800
I don't know this was Bill Wyman, but same difference. No, you're saying he's the quiet stone. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, you're absolutely right. Absolutely right. They literally like it would look over at each other and smile and just keep playing. That's about it. Yeah. No, you got you hit the nail on the head. That's that's that's actually focused on the documentary. He has a documentary called The Quieter One. The quietest one. The most quiet. His documentary is called That guy shut the fuck up.

00:56:59.319 --> 00:57:23.640
Did Matt have anything to throw? You know, I got some beer from people. That's pretty close enough. Otherwise, yeah. All right. Yeah, so the reason we're going so slow is because we're trying to avoid what we're about to get to. Yes, I know. But we did sort of fill it up as if there were a band interview. We're about an hour in. So, nice. All right, yeah. So moving on to the news.

00:57:36.360 --> 00:57:56.320
I'd like to suggest we all that we all respect each other here and everybody should get a couple minutes to talk about what we're about to talk about. Sure. And then of course we'll go back and forth but I'd really like to hear everybody's thoughts. So the huge news that we heard yesterday the day before. Just yeah.

00:57:56.600 --> 00:58:26.540
24 hours. Yeah. Uh, that, uh, Neil Peart from rush legend of the drums has passed away. And John of course broke the news with, within our group. And I was just like floored. It seemed like a mistake. You had to read it a couple of times. Yeah. Um, so maybe let's just start with you, George. I mean, what, what went through your head and how you feel about all this? I mean, I really do want to hear these things cause this is a weird story.

00:58:26.600 --> 00:58:56.300
Well, you know, he's one of those guys, he wasn't that old, he was only 67, but he apparently was battling brain cancer for the last three and a half years. But we didn't know that. And so for us, it was a very sudden tearing away of somebody that's always been there, an icon of hard rock music. And so I, when I saw John's message,

00:58:56.580 --> 00:59:26.360
I was just kind of like, no, that can't be. Yeah. You know, what the hell happened? I think my first thought was actually like, was he like riding his motorcycle and something happened? Because I read his book, the, I can't think of the name of it now because my brain doesn't work. Yeah. But the journey's thing. Like Ghost Rider or something. He's got, he had a few of them. Yeah. So yeah, that was my initial thought. And,

00:59:26.580 --> 00:59:56.560
I had to Google it, of course, as we do. I'm not trying to play Ringmaster here, but I'd like to hear John's thoughts, or should we save John to last? I think he's probably... It doesn't matter to me, whatever you guys want to do. Well, you go. You go. Yeah, so we joke about me being the prod guy, but there was really no one else for me that was a bigger influence when I was growing up, because I played drums for years, and he was the guy. I know that that becomes

00:59:56.600 --> 01:00:02.380
cliche for a lot of people our age but he just was the guy that i looked up to the most

01:00:03.220 --> 01:00:08.420
so when i i got a message from a really close friend of mine from my friend lisa and it just

01:00:08.560 --> 01:00:15.360
basically said did you hear about neil and as soon as i saw that because i'm sure we all refer to

01:00:15.640 --> 01:00:20.540
musicians that we like our close friends by their first names as if we all know them you know you know

01:00:21.060 --> 01:00:25.819
and uh as soon as i yeah you know i mean i can't tell you the time it's like well did you see what

01:00:26.240 --> 01:00:55.600
It's like as if Getty was in my house downstairs drinking a beer. Plus, Neil is spelled the very E-I, you knew it was him she was talking about. Yeah, and I just knew as soon as she sent it, I was like, God damn. I knew. I looked it up and I put something. I don't post much non-music stuff on Facebook because I think it's just a waste of time. And I was really apprehensive about putting something up and I checked like four or five times,

01:00:55.840 --> 01:01:25.800
make sure it was correct and i saw it of all places rolling stone who for 30 years trashed that band and now they're the biggest rush champions ever they had a good article on them today did they really trash them they trashed them for years it wasn't it they trashed zeppelin i mean they just absolutely just destroyed rush and then they realized oh shit rush still has a massive fan base around the world we should parlay this into something good for us so they were like a dungeons and dragons joke to them well yeah they did have a good write-up on him though

01:01:25.820 --> 01:01:55.700
So, but I was, I don't want to use the word gutted because we don't know these people, but they're still a major influence in our lives. And, um, and a constant companion. I mean, and yeah. And it's funny. The joke is, you know, if you're a Rush fan, you know, for all the geeks and nerds, they were our heroes. And so I, I, I played sports in high school and I was part of those groups, but the group I wanted to hang out with the most were my, my music friends. That was cool to hang out with those other guys. But after a while, I was like, this,

01:01:55.800 --> 01:02:25.160
This is boring. I played. I'm done. I want to go home and hang out with my music friends. And we were all Rush geeks. Actually, I didn't even like Rush at first. My friend Jim Rossi, growing up, convinced me to like them. And it's been a 40-year thing for me. I've been going to see them since 1985. So I wouldn't say I was devastated, but it was like a deep, dark place in your gut. You're like, something's going to be missing now going forward. And we expect this. We know this is going to happen. It's not that this is uncommon.

01:02:25.800 --> 01:02:55.780
It's just when they're your heroes, that's when it's hard to... Well, but also when it's so unexpected, though, too, because, like, if it was Ozzy, I'd be like, yeah, okay. You know what I mean? Like, I love Ozzy, but, yeah, Ozzy's gonna die, dude. I mean, come on. Well, it's like when... I'm a huge Bowie fan, too, and when Bowie went, it was the same thing. Nobody knew. Yeah. Right. The only problem about Bowie's is that it happened, like, in succession with, like, four other big names. It was like, what the fuck is going on? But it was also right either after or before that record came out, and I still...

01:02:55.800 --> 01:03:01.340
I think he did that on purpose. And watching that fucking Lazarus video dude that is the most

01:03:01.780 --> 01:03:06.000
affecting. Well I'll turn my two cents and just say that I

01:03:06.820 --> 01:03:10.240
I found out through John's Facebook post and was

01:03:11.040 --> 01:03:14.120
gobsmacked like everybody else just like was like what? Like what?

01:03:14.760 --> 01:03:19.120
That just didn't ring true and I think it's partially because as you say we didn't know he was sick or anything like that

01:03:19.170 --> 01:03:23.359
and so that was odd and the last public photo I saw of him he looked alright you know

01:03:24.380 --> 01:03:52.020
He was wearing bandanas on his head for a while, and I did wonder, was he dealing with something? But I think that was probably even before his diagnosis. But my thoughts just about it were, I honestly immediately thought of the other band members, because that was a very tight band with no lineup changes after he joined. And also I felt bad, because he just retired, and so he was enjoying his family and all that kind of stuff.

01:03:52.120 --> 01:04:22.060
He has a very young daughter. If you know any history about him, his first wife and daughter, first daughter, had died fairly close to each other. And he had contemplated retiring. And Rush, they didn't officially break up, but they went on hiatus. They weren't sure they were ever going to come back. For a while. Yeah, it was about six years in between albums, and they weren't sure if they were going to do it back in the 90s. But then as to my own personal thoughts, I do love Rush a lot.

01:04:22.120 --> 01:04:51.960
I like all the eras of Rush. I shared a bunch of songs on my Facebook page that are some of my favorites. I purposely left off some of the more histrionic stuff just because I'm not going to put my mom through that on Facebook. Not that she'd listen anyway, but meaning the longer, you know, I'm not going to put 2112 up there. But songs like Time Stand Still, The Past and stuff are too hard to listen to right now, dude, because of how sad that is. And then the only thing, the other thing I'll say is that, and we were talking about this,

01:04:52.120 --> 01:04:54.980
before we started recording that you,

01:04:56.980 --> 01:04:58.920
it was interesting to just watch Facebook,

01:04:59.200 --> 01:05:01.700
at least my Facebook feed just be taken over by this.

01:05:02.280 --> 01:05:06.580
Everybody who I'm friended up with was putting up pictures of him and changing their profile pic.

01:05:06.800 --> 01:05:10.760
And some of them sharing little stories or YouTube songs or whatever.

01:05:10.960 --> 01:05:11.080
So,

01:05:11.820 --> 01:05:12.000
so,

01:05:12.170 --> 01:05:12.480
you know,

01:05:12.550 --> 01:05:12.660
he,

01:05:13.420 --> 01:05:14.800
he is the influence he thought he was.

01:05:14.810 --> 01:05:15.140
I mean,

01:05:15.660 --> 01:05:15.740
yeah,

01:05:15.810 --> 01:05:16.840
I was surprised by that.

01:05:17.210 --> 01:05:17.320
Other,

01:05:17.760 --> 01:05:17.860
other,

01:05:17.860 --> 01:05:21.140
other musician that I can remember dying in the last 10 years.

01:05:21.260 --> 01:05:50.300
Like, deal wasn't like that. Not like that. He was everywhere. Yeah. I mean, we know a lot of rock and metal people, but, you know, when people, famous people die, you see one or two people in your feed say something, you're like, yeah. But man, it was like every other post in my feed was something about that. And, you know, people that even like just like old coworkers and stuff, somebody that it's not, I'm not even connected with musically, we're like posting stuff. And I was just like, wow.

01:05:50.340 --> 01:05:52.620
There's this guy I used to work with who like

01:05:53.420 --> 01:05:54.720
apparently he's like a John

01:05:54.920 --> 01:05:56.840
level Rush fan and he was

01:05:56.840 --> 01:05:58.760
just gutted as you said

01:05:59.400 --> 01:06:00.860
you know like

01:06:01.200 --> 01:06:02.540
losing his mind

01:06:03.050 --> 01:06:04.980
he was so upset about this I was like wow

01:06:05.390 --> 01:06:06.080
did not know that

01:06:06.520 --> 01:06:08.680
If you want a good indication

01:06:08.750 --> 01:06:10.860
how actual entertainers musicians

01:06:11.160 --> 01:06:12.940
feel Matt was mentioning about watching

01:06:12.970 --> 01:06:14.540
the Rush the Sam Dunn

01:06:14.930 --> 01:06:16.360
Rush documentary watched that

01:06:16.680 --> 01:06:18.759
all the different famous musicians

01:06:18.760 --> 01:06:48.580
that were like diehard fans. Why he was alive, by the way. Yeah, I mean, this just came out, I think, I don't know, what, seven, eight years ago, maybe longer. And it's just literally one big name after another in music that they're just diehards. And so I think that speaks volumes when it trickles down to the to the common man like us or a common person. The working man, perhaps. Oh, perhaps. But to give Will, Marcus, son, and or Matt, who all might have some thoughts here, a chance to chime in.

01:06:48.780 --> 01:06:49.040
your thoughts?

01:06:51.980 --> 01:06:52.840
Yeah, I mean

01:06:54.660 --> 01:06:55.500
people really

01:06:56.140 --> 01:06:57.700
obviously respect him because he's the best

01:06:57.860 --> 01:06:59.820
drummer ever, you know, he doesn't get

01:07:00.580 --> 01:07:01.400
much better

01:07:02.640 --> 01:07:03.860
than Neil Peart

01:07:04.360 --> 01:07:06.080
and everybody knows he's an amazing

01:07:06.240 --> 01:07:07.220
drummer, but for me

01:07:08.080 --> 01:07:10.040
I think, and a lot of people might not

01:07:10.340 --> 01:07:11.940
realize it, of course Rush fans do, but he

01:07:12.120 --> 01:07:14.020
wrote all the lyrics for Rush, so for

01:07:14.200 --> 01:07:15.760
me as a writer, I mean

01:07:15.820 --> 01:07:17.979
I really identified with that

01:07:18.000 --> 01:07:44.960
because of all the cool fantasy and sci-fi and philosophy and metaphor. That's the stuff that I was into when I was a kid. And a lot of the people that I knew were not into Rush except for my best friend Josh loved Rush. And so we would listen to those albums all the time in the car, at his house, at my house. And I love that because he's still one of my very best friends.

01:07:45.060 --> 01:08:14.820
And it was one of the prime bonding experiences we had because of Rush and some other bands. But Rush was like the number one for us because we just, they did something that no other bands did at the time, I think. All of the themes that I mentioned and just the amazing musicianship where they're just all like virtuosos. And of course, Neil Peart was a huge part of that. So yeah, it's a big blow for me.

01:08:14.900 --> 01:08:44.859
because I've liked Rush all the way through. There's some bands where you love when they first start, you know? Yeah, yeah. And yeah, you have a passing interest and you're still going to follow them, but you don't love them as much as when they first started. I actually really enjoyed all their albums to the end. Yeah. And so to me, like they never, they never really dipped in quality ever. They didn't. And so I love that part. And I only saw them one time my whole life because I'm not really a big

01:08:44.960 --> 01:09:13.739
I've never really wanted to go to those big stadium ones but my friend Brian is a huge like classic rock fan and loves Rush and so he actually bought me a ticket and took me to the show because like you have to experience at least once I know you don't like big shows I like you go on the small metal shows and all this and that but you should go in and see this and experience with me and I'm glad he made me do that you know he invited me to do that because it was a great show and I felt like I saw

01:09:14.560 --> 01:09:43.580
Some of the best musicians ever on this planet. Do you remember what tour it was by any chance? No. I have to look that up too. Yeah. I've been kind of upset about it. So I haven't, I've just been listening to the music. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I saw him on Presto and Roll the Bones tour. And I would say one thing is, and the reason I asked, well, and that's not why I asked, but that's just one thing about Rush is that A, you never saw so many air drummers in your life if you go to a Rush. You know what I mean? And that's,

01:09:43.759 --> 01:10:13.560
So that's all about Neil too. And then secondarily, just to hear you talk about your experience, and then John also talking about his, I got into Rush in high school too. And I think they're the first, especially if you're a metalhead kid, they're the first like smart band you get into. That's right. And it's, so I think there's a kind of like post-adolescence thing where you're just sort of like maybe starting to read a little bit and stuff like that. Rush just makes sense for kids that age, guys that age who are maybe like us who are probably into books and sci-fi and stuff. That's right. And I was a big reader of comics.

01:10:13.760 --> 01:10:43.720
just sci-fi books and most of the music around the time when I was like high school or late middle school was like Bobby Brown or something you know and then also when he introduced me to Rush and it just kind of blew my mind because I didn't even know that that kind of music existed yeah the first music biography I ever read was of Rush and it was this just picture book thing really I mean but it was like one of those it was nicely put together I remember reading about them talking about driving and this was when I was in high school and it was when they were driving from show to show and I said and they would write songs in the pot filled car

01:10:43.720 --> 01:11:13.600
And I was like, ooh, they smoke pot. That's awesome. Well, I think it also helped to get me into metal. Just because, you know, the songs are so complex and interesting and just the playing was on such a high level. I just kind of gravitated to some of the heavier music where they did that as well, you know. And like I said, I just really knew when you're growing up, you hear like the hits or the radio or Casey Kasem or some bullshit. And, you know, when you hear something like that, it just kind of opens you up to something.

01:11:13.740 --> 01:11:13.860
else.

01:11:16.560 --> 01:11:44.700
Matt and Will, do you have thoughts? The first thing I would say, I don't know if anybody else watched the 49ers Vikings game. It was kind of cool. And they went to a commercial break. They put a little bit closer to the heart. I can only hope that was a nod to him. And if it wasn't, that's cool too. Through most of my life, I probably previously knew more of the hits. And so it's been over the past few years where I've been getting more into kind of some of those quote unquote deeper guts.

01:11:45.320 --> 01:12:13.640
And while I'm not as familiar with them and could not label myself a diehard fan, I have diehard respect for that band, both in terms of what they've done for metal and just their existence. The other piece I'll say is my main man, Eric, who is a friend of the podcast, also a drummer. I saw him post. Yeah, I would say, Neil, if he was not the most influential person in his life, he was right at the top of the list. He got me into thinking about him as a drummer.

01:12:14.180 --> 01:12:43.480
But also, I feel like when I think of Rush, and if there's someone in that band that stands out to me, it is Neil. I don't know if that's more because of Eric or just because of him. Like, when I watched the documentary, that is who stood out to me the most was Neil. Not that the other guys, there was anything bad about them, but it was just something about him and his life and the way he lived it that stood out to me. And so, you know, I just, I had the utmost respect for him and that band and all of them. And I mean, what a punch in the face.

01:12:43.680 --> 01:12:48.840
you know just to hear that and you know the first thing i said was like how the fuck is this not

01:12:49.120 --> 01:12:53.600
like a headline and of course when i woke up the next morning it was on the news but still like

01:12:54.520 --> 01:13:00.680
um you know and it was like three days before it was announced yeah i mean just which was i think that

01:13:00.740 --> 01:13:05.080
was the family's choice i don't think yeah totally well yeah yeah not not that it was not important

01:13:05.740 --> 01:13:10.900
which brings us not last but not least you will did you have thoughts on this matter and it's just i want

01:13:10.920 --> 01:13:40.000
I'd like everybody to say if they can name their favorite Rush record. So you should start thinking now. So you guys should definitely not have left me for last. So I am not the biggest Rush fan, but I will say that I have, there's a few interesting aspects of Rush that I would like to share. And first and foremost is when I met John, probably what, nine years ago now? God, it's hard to believe it's been that long.

01:13:41.800 --> 01:14:09.840
Whenever you bring that up, could you say when John and I fell in love? Yes. So when I met John at my old brewery and we fell in love and he was wearing an OPEP shirt, I walked up to him and I was like, hey man, do you like metal? And he looked at me like, well, I'm wearing this fucking shirt, you asshole. Sounds about right. And then I got on my knees. Yes. George, we're down to 14% women. Say something sexy.

01:14:10.700 --> 01:14:40.400
But I have to say that the reason why I bring John up is that there is a important aspect of my later appreciation for Rush because I will be the first one to admit that when I was in high school and you see some of the other kids walk around with Rush shirts on and I would hear Rush on the radio. And I've said this to John before. I just, Geddy Lee's voice just didn't do it for me. It just sounded too much. But John's dead. Yes.

01:14:40.680 --> 01:15:09.440
I mean, John's got a deep voice and there's glasses and that goatee and that beautiful gray hair. I mean, I'm not really talking much. Yeah. But no, like, but I have to say, like, it, like, I rushed never process for me as a, as a young kid and stuff like that. But after, after doing this podcast for a while and John being the one who was the number one rush fan on this podcast that, that I consider the number one rush fan on this podcast.

01:15:10.240 --> 01:15:37.180
So when I would listen to Ozzy's Boneyard or whatever, I'm listening to the radio, and I heard Rush on the radio, my immediate reaction was not to turn it off or change the channel. And I would listen to it. And the one thing that I would listen to always is that I only know two people in that band by name, which is Geddy Lee and Neil Peart.

01:15:37.560 --> 01:15:38.400
Alex Lifeson.

01:15:39.500 --> 01:16:09.480
I'm saying the ones that I know. He's just informing you. I'm making sure you know there's a third person. I have no idea that there's a third person in that band. Aside from a singer and a drummer. So when I did go back and so I wouldn't turn them off immediately and I would and you guys know how much vocals drive me nuts. Vocals can make or break a band for me and then so I would get past the vocals and just listen to music and I just started realizing

01:16:10.460 --> 01:16:39.300
how absolutely groundbreaking and phenomenal this music really was, and specifically the drums. And when you see these photographs of Pert, I mean, a 360 circle of drums. And he uses every fucking one of them. Yeah, and all that stuff. You're just like, this guy was a virtuoso. This guy was ahead of his time. So to me, I can absolutely appreciate John's influence.

01:16:39.880 --> 01:17:08.240
to opening my eyes to get past this crappy singer and just listen to the music. I'm sorry, I'm going to say that. I don't enjoy the singing, but when you listen to the music, it is absolutely phenomenal music. The musicianship and the songwriting is absolutely phenomenal. And when you look at what this guy was able to do on drums, it is top notch. He was a musical drummer, though, too.

01:17:09.500 --> 01:17:39.480
I mean, I said people played air drums at Rush shows more than any other band, and that's just period. That's a fact. But you can, when you listen to Rush, and this may be true with a lot of bands, but when you listen to Rush, you remember his drum fills, and you anticipate them when you listen to the song again, because they are such an important part of the music and such a musical thing. It's not just keeping time. He's doing this whole other fucking thing. That's just incredible. I do want to know what, for those of you who have a favorite, or who feel like you're at least devoted to

01:17:39.520 --> 01:18:08.300
to have a favorite. I would ask you what your favorite is. And I'll go first and just say that. Mine is... And it's hard to choose because there's like a bunch. It's like, oh, this one, this one, and this one. I'll say Hemispheres because it's got everything on it. Like, I mean, it's got Livia Strangiano and The Trees, even though that's like a geeky one to like at this point. It's like the obvious, slightly deep track that every Rush fan loves. And it's got Circumstances on it, which is fucking cool. And then it's got the big title track-y thing.

01:18:09.520 --> 01:18:39.360
With a short, slightly followed, barely, by Moving Pictures, which is really one of the great transitional records of all time. It's the record that happened between their first part of that band and before the second half of that band, and it's brilliant. It really is as good. Even though all the songs are on the radio, it's a great fucking record. It's just so good. Mark a song. Yeah, that's a hard one. I'm going to go with Farewell to King.

01:18:43.480 --> 01:18:49.340
I like that song because I feel like they push some of the prog on there with like the

01:18:49.380 --> 01:18:56.480
sickness x1 I like that they have simple songs on there as well like closer to the heart is there's

01:18:56.480 --> 01:19:09.480
something about the mix of that record that really speaks to me but I do really love all their albums is that this one probably this band is the hardest for me to to rank all the albums from the

01:19:10.700 --> 01:19:38.520
The question was designed to be hard. But also, I would say about A Farewell to the Kings, it's a great follow-up to 2112, which was their breakthrough. And it's a damn fine record. John? Yeah. It's hard because there's a lot to choose. And I actually had my top six, just in case this question got asked. I'm doing an order. Do them all.

01:19:39.500 --> 01:19:44.680
Yeah, we should have made a last minute change and made this our top five.

01:19:45.980 --> 01:19:48.700
Yeah, but I didn't think that everyone would have a top five.

01:19:49.360 --> 01:19:50.540
Yeah, we'll probably have trouble.

01:19:50.900 --> 01:19:53.360
Yeah, and that's just because I figured you wouldn't.

01:19:54.500 --> 01:19:56.780
Yeah, that's why I didn't suggest it, but I'll do it real quick.

01:19:57.400 --> 01:20:04.800
And if anyone doesn't know me, you wouldn't get this, but if you know me, it's pretty obvious what my six are going to be, if you know the catalog.

01:20:05.300 --> 01:20:35.040
So six would be probably signals. Five would probably be permanent waves. Four would be 2112. Three would be hemispheres. Two would be moving pictures. And one would be in league with Markisan a farewell. The Kings by far stands out as their best album. The song Xanadu alone is worth the price of admission. I had a point of posting that as one of my favorites. And Cinderella.

01:20:35.140 --> 01:21:03.500
The Man is just this great short song, but it's just packed with a punch. And while Close to the Heart's on there, and that's the kind of, you know, sing-y song of the album, I guess. Then they have Sigus X1, which any Rush fan will tell you that they'll sit through that whole part where you're reversing through space to get to that first bass line. And then you'll sit there like a total nerd and count out the minutes or the seconds to the next bass line.

01:21:03.660 --> 01:21:33.420
Oh, but dude, Xanadu's the same way. And so one of my favorite songs of theirs is Camera Eye off of... Absolutely love it. It's one of my favorite songs by then, easily. But the intro is grotesquely long, but in the best kind of way. Like, I don't have any problem with that. I'm just saying as a restaurant, you'll sit and you'll get through it to get to this suddenly very moving and almost very melodious song once it gets into the heart of the matter. And I assume that it really is about what Neil wrote it about, which is just this sort of going around and taking pictures on tour.

01:21:33.660 --> 01:22:03.640
I am quite pleased that my pick is the same as John's. I didn't expect that actually. I mean, the opening track alone, A Fairway Kings, it's just unbelievable. He's on the 12 string guitar. It starts out and it just rips. He did. He's pulling out. I'm assuming he's pulling out his 12 string electric guitar to play the rest of the song. Yeah. You know, so. That's so cool. Awesome. George. Mine would be 2112. It's predictable, but that was that was the first. Actually, it's not predictable, though, because a lot of people would go

01:22:03.640 --> 01:22:05.080
with moving pictures of permanent ways.

01:22:06.120 --> 01:22:11.220
It was the first, I mean, it took me a bit to get into Rush in high school.

01:22:13.140 --> 01:22:15.760
Like Will, I was initially turned off by the vocals.

01:22:15.900 --> 01:22:18.540
They weren't really my thing, though they are now.

01:22:19.820 --> 01:22:27.200
But I had a friend named Andy who was a huge D&D and Rush nerd.

01:22:27.740 --> 01:22:29.660
And he convinced me, he's like, listen to 2112.

01:22:30.440 --> 01:22:31.840
And I was like, oh, that's pretty freaking awesome.

01:22:32.560 --> 01:22:34.800
And so it's just always been my favorite. Followed

01:22:35.360 --> 01:22:36.460
even possibly more

01:22:37.580 --> 01:22:39.320
conceivably more strangely by Presto

01:22:40.180 --> 01:22:41.120
which was my second album.

01:22:41.540 --> 01:22:42.420
Oh dude Presto's great.

01:22:43.020 --> 01:22:46.020
And by the way 2112 was the first one I heard too George.

01:22:46.240 --> 01:22:46.420
Yeah.

01:22:46.800 --> 01:22:46.900
Yeah.

01:22:49.820 --> 01:22:51.480
And it was not the newest one at that time.

01:22:51.600 --> 01:22:52.100
I mean I think

01:22:52.380 --> 01:22:52.680
I'm sure

01:22:53.840 --> 01:22:55.760
Power Windows was out by the time I heard

01:22:56.540 --> 01:22:56.940
2112.

01:22:57.860 --> 01:22:57.940
Yeah.

01:22:58.640 --> 01:23:00.600
Though I heard obviously Tom Swayer and all that shit.

01:23:01.600 --> 01:23:02.520
Matt do you have one that

01:23:03.860 --> 01:23:08.580
I think in my earlier life it would have been moving pictures but later on farewell to

01:23:08.680 --> 01:23:14.780
kings so well I'm just gonna go ahead and choose farewell to kings for you is that right

01:23:16.380 --> 01:23:20.400
you know I'm sitting here thinking like they haven't asked me yet but probably for good reason

01:23:21.040 --> 01:23:29.380
but I will say that the the song that I probably it's hard for me to say because I don't know all the

01:23:30.280 --> 01:23:59.360
The discography of Rush, but the song that I kind of like, and I do have a vivid memory, so it's the song of The Working Man, and I have a vivid memory of this playing when I was in high school in the factory. I worked in a factory, a machine shop, when I was in high school. Every day after work for like three years from 10th, 11th, and 12th grade, I worked in a machine shop doing production work, machine tools and all that stuff, but I do

01:23:59.400 --> 01:24:27.820
I do remember there's a lot of 94 WISP in Philadelphia. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And 93 point something WMMR. Oh, yeah. MMR. And so I do remember the Rush, the Working Man song coming on a lot. And I kind of resonated with that. Like, here I am. I'm like 17, 16, 17, 18 years old. I'm slaving away.

01:24:28.560 --> 01:24:58.080
Five hours a day. After work, after school, five hours a day, I'm knee deep in grease and metal shavings and hot metal shavings flying at your face. What was flying at your face? I have to tell you this. So here's an irony though, Will, is even though your taste is your taste and you have every right, the question was, what's your favorite thing? The irony is this, that that puts you slightly off topic for what reason? John knows.

01:24:58.580 --> 01:25:28.440
Everybody else probably knows. Well, it's not an album. It's a song. No, Neil Peart's not on that. But wait, why is he not on that? He wasn't on the first album. He joined the band after that record. Yeah, that record, yeah. Which is funny because what year was it, John? 73, 74? That came out in 74 and John Rutz, he had to leave the band because of physical issues. And so he joined for that tour, as I understand it. But the joke is, and this is true, I mean,

01:25:28.560 --> 01:25:57.540
He's the new guy in the band. Exactly. That's it. I mean, 40 years in, they were still referred to him as the new guy. Yeah. I have no idea. Before we move on, could I suggest we take a quick bathroom break? Would that be all right? And I need a beer after that heavy, heavy section. You're listening to the Metalheads podcast, where they don't know the meaning of brevity. Seriously, no clue. All right. We're back.

01:25:58.580 --> 01:26:26.180
John would like to say something. Yeah, I just want to say real quick. And let's see if you guys agree. Those of you who are actual hardcore Rush fans, there are three actual facts or laws of Rush in my mind that are almost across the board universally thought of. The first is that the song Free Will, when the bass and guitar solo comes up, literally every time I'm in my car, I will stop what I'm doing if I'm parked or if I'm still driving and that volume will go as max second height.

01:26:27.380 --> 01:26:55.660
I don't know any hardcore Rush fan that doesn't turn it up. It doesn't matter where you are anytime. That's the first thing. The second thing is the song Signals couldn't speak more to a group of people ever. The lyrics of that song, you know, outcasts and people who are different. I think that song just stands out that even if you're sick of the song, you say, yeah, that's the one that really ties me to them. And anyone who's ever been to a Rush show waits for one thing to happen. And it's just to hear attention, planets of the Solar Federation.

01:26:56.000 --> 01:27:25.980
We Have Assumed Control. It's like the highlight of your night when you hear that. And it's being piped in over the speakers. My guitar teacher, the last guitar teacher I had posted that on Facebook as his tribute to Neil was just that attention and did the whole thing. We Have Assumed Control. Which I thought was a good tribute in a weird sort of way. Yeah, so I just, I real quick, I put a playlist on Spotify with my, at the moment I did it, 25 favorite songs. And my tribute to him was I posted a picture of his drum set where he

01:27:26.020 --> 01:27:55.980
He wasn't sitting at it. Yeah. Yeah. So. Oof. I played that today while I was cleaning my office. Your playlist. Did you like it? Yeah. It's great. It's fantastic. Like I said, my kids didn't bitch, so I took that as a huge thumbs up. But you did, Matt. Yeah. That was kind of confusing the whole time. Yeah, bitch said it ended. The kid's like, what's wrong with you? There's only 25 songs. What the fuck? I listened to that last night with the headphones, and I got

01:27:56.000 --> 01:28:25.820
I was like, man, what the fuck was I thinking? I gotta go to bed. It's a three hour long playlist and it's only 25 songs. So I moved up our next item because it was it was originally on the list of news items before we found out about Neil. And now the context of it has completely changed. Yeah, it has. So there was a news item and it was Mike Portnoy.

01:28:26.020 --> 01:28:55.980
shooting down a rumor that he would join Geddy and Alex for a 40th anniversary permanent waves tour well it is unlikely as that seemed initially it certainly isn't something that would happen now it would be the crassest thing ever to do a tour without him right after he died timing sure was odd how that story leaked yeah and I think it's related and I and and also I think they're the least likely to musicians in the world to ever do anything like that honestly

01:28:56.580 --> 01:29:24.860
I'm very surprised if they do that ever with somebody else. I could see them playing songs. I could see them doing a show and having multiple different people sit in. Something like that, yeah. But I would never see them tour, though. Yeah, and they won't call it Rush, whatever they do. No, they may want to do something with a non-famous drummer. Like a charity thing. Yeah, and they'll play some songs. Let's bring John Retsy back. I don't know, maybe he's dead, too. I don't know.

01:29:26.020 --> 01:29:55.640
I don't know whatever happened to him. I know you said he had physical issues. That's why he quit playing. Yeah, he quit the band. Yeah, just joking. Yeah, that's just a strange rumor to come out. I thought anyway, regardless. Yeah, me too. And I didn't buy it when I first read it. I was like, bullshit. Yeah, but I do expect that those other two will do something at some point. Sort of. They've sort of signaled that they would. Yeah. Yeah. I like the idea of bringing in other drummers to do like certain songs and do like a benefit.

01:29:56.000 --> 01:30:25.320
Not even a tour, but just maybe a one-off. Yeah. And then it'll show you who really can play. Right. Yeah. Yeah, I could think. They could bring in, like, a guy, Marco Miniman. I don't know who he is. He's a famous drummer from Germany. He's an outstanding player. He'll come in and nail it. And then, like, Dave Grohl will come in and, like, try to play a song. You're like, Dave, I know you're a fan. Eh, play a wife. Okay, off the top of your head, who are some guys that can handle it? Danny Carey, probably. You also see Danny Carey play with them.

01:30:26.000 --> 01:30:55.820
Stewart Copeland could probably do some stuff. I mean, Virgil Donati is a name that would be kind of cool to see. Portnoy, obviously. Yeah, obviously. John, how do you, Hannes Grossman, your guy. Oh, dude, I bought him on the tour. So, funny story, when watching Die Hard, and I referred to the main bad guy, and number one is Hannes Grossman, not Gruber. I was like, you know what, fuck it, it doesn't matter. I saw, yeah,

01:30:56.000 --> 01:31:24.960
I saw a good meme this year that was said it's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from there. Yeah, from Nakatomi. Yeah, it's just how metal you are, Matt. Exactly. I've read this shit. I had a friend who sent me a breaking news urgent and he sent me from the, yeah, it was a whatever plaza that there was shooting and the police were responding and I was like, oh shit, is this real? I was like, oh, wait a minute, dude, that's Die Hard. I was like, that's a good one. Yeah, I saw that meme and then

01:31:24.960 --> 01:31:54.200
And then I saw, like, at the same time, I was actually, Die Hard was actually on. And when it got to that point, I, like, took a picture of my TV. In the same, you know, Hans Gruber falling pose as the meme. I was like, it must be Christmas. All right. We will now move on from all things Rush. There are other tragedies in the world, however.

01:31:55.340 --> 01:31:57.160
And Australia's one of them.

01:31:58.160 --> 01:31:58.360
Oh, yeah.

01:31:58.480 --> 01:32:00.420
I thought you were about to say Metallica's making a new album.

01:32:01.160 --> 01:32:01.600
No, no.

01:32:01.720 --> 01:32:06.320
But Metallica did pledge over $500,000 to the Australia fire relief.

01:32:07.500 --> 01:32:09.500
I do like before you used to mention the fires.

01:32:10.040 --> 01:32:12.880
I like just thinking that Australia was one of the tragedies of the world.

01:32:13.760 --> 01:32:15.220
Well, yes, it was a prison colony.

01:32:16.400 --> 01:32:19.140
Because I saw another meme, not to interrupt you, I apologize.

01:32:19.280 --> 01:32:21.280
But it was this thing where somebody had posted on Twitter.

01:32:21.520 --> 01:32:23.780
I just can't get over that huge

01:32:24.280 --> 01:32:26.540
garbage dump or the huge island of garbage

01:32:26.620 --> 01:32:27.480
in the middle of the ocean

01:32:28.160 --> 01:32:29.580
and somebody answered them and said yeah

01:32:29.840 --> 01:32:30.520
England's a joke

01:32:35.620 --> 01:32:36.460
I apologize

01:32:37.000 --> 01:32:39.800
but yeah I mean I thought that was pretty cool that they did that

01:32:40.340 --> 01:32:42.280
and yeah a lot of money

01:32:42.600 --> 01:32:43.760
a little closer to the home

01:32:43.960 --> 01:32:45.660
to home though Markisan

01:32:45.940 --> 01:32:47.460
I know you did something for it

01:32:49.000 --> 01:32:49.980
yeah I mean

01:32:49.980 --> 01:33:19.560
What's happening in Australia is just terrible, especially to the animal population there. So it's really great to see Metallica using their influence and power to raise that much money for the fire relief. But our friend Trevor also did a benefit like putting up songs for Ash and Horde. So I saw that and it's inspired me to do something too. So I put up some stuff from Voracious that people could get.

01:33:20.020 --> 01:33:48.020
if they want to donate. Yeah, it made, I don't know, like almost $400 or something. Oh, wow, great. Yeah, I was surprised. Pretty cool that people would do that. Nowhere near close to Metallica. Yeah, but Markazine, can you expand on that? Do you go to a certain website? Like, what is a racial charity effort? Yes, you can go to markazine.com and I have a store there and you just click on the link there.

01:33:50.000 --> 01:34:19.360
There's a section there where you can donate. I've sent it to a dollar. And you can donate whatever you want. If you want to donate more than a dollar, just change the quantity. And you get a couple cool voracious items. Of course, that's not the point of it. But we're going to send it to help the animals there. So I'll probably send some stuff this week. And then I might do another push for it next week as well.

01:34:20.000 --> 01:34:47.500
When you mail it, can I suggest you just put it in an envelope? It's all digital. Oh, sorry. Because I really want you to mail it and say Australia slash kangaroos. It's the koalas that are getting the worst. Yeah. No, it's digital. So you get like volume three of Voracious digitally. And then we actually did, for our Kickstarter, we did a couple, we did a tape, actually. We made a cassette tape that's an interview with us.

01:34:50.060 --> 01:35:19.480
So the audio files, you would get those as well. So it's kind of like, you know, you get the whole volume plus kind of behind the scenes of Voracious. So, Markisan, can you spell the name of the website? Because not everyone may know how to spell Markisan. Okay. It's M-A-R-K-I-S-A-N. Markisan.com. Could you go ahead and please spell.com? D-O-T.

01:35:21.719 --> 01:35:48.520
W-O-M-W-C as in com, U as in underling, M as in... M. I know Jay from Crowhurst also threw up, if you donated and had proof of donation, you could get some stuff. I believe the stuff he recorded from Roadburn. One of those tracks we actually got when we interviewed him, to which I did. Some cool shit.

01:35:50.000 --> 01:36:19.860
of course our concerns, thoughts, and sympathies to those who are being really just run through the ring around there. And some of these things could go for months, sir. Hey, Jay, quick question. Do you know what Metallica did for all the fires in California? They did do something. They might have gave $500,000, to be honest with you. They made a substantial, they didn't do the first one, they did it for the Napa fires. Yeah, that's what I thought. I just couldn't remember. I thought they had done something, but I couldn't remember. It was just cash out of hand, too.

01:36:21.760 --> 01:36:49.820
I know that James and what's his name lived up in that area close by. Yeah, James lives in Colorado now, but he probably still has his house here. And I know Kirk has all that property up that way. I just was curious. Yeah, he's got a ranch. Yeah. Yeah, they gave substantial amounts of money in it. And I want to say I'd have been $500,000 in that case too, yeah. You know, bless their hearts for that. Hey, you can say what you want about Metallica. Yeah, they got a gazillion dollars, but that's a lot of money to give.

01:36:51.680 --> 01:37:19.720
They didn't do a show or anything. They were just like, here's $500,000. I'll give them this. They used to do those pop-up shows. Remember, they used to show up in a flatbed truck, or they would drop the side of the truck at like a Tower Records, and they'd play a show in the parking lot. I mean, I'm not a fan of the music since God knows when, but that's still pretty cool to do that. They've done a lot of cool things, yeah. For sure. Also, I forgot to mention, too, that all the money that I get for my thing is going to go to the World Wildlife Fund,

01:37:19.940 --> 01:37:20.280
Australia.

01:37:21.300 --> 01:37:24.760
So I'm not taking any money out of it. It's just all going there.

01:37:25.380 --> 01:37:29.380
And, you know, if somebody wants something else like volume one, you know, just let me know.

01:37:29.460 --> 01:37:31.660
I'm happy to send you whatever you want.

01:37:32.460 --> 01:37:32.540
Nice.

01:37:32.900 --> 01:37:32.960
Cool.

01:37:33.440 --> 01:37:39.280
And if you want to get the the Ashen Horde song, it's up on Bandcamp and it's called Assemblance of Normalcy.

01:37:40.320 --> 01:37:41.060
So check that out.

01:37:43.340 --> 01:37:44.660
Warning, it has clean singing.

01:37:45.160 --> 01:37:45.500
Yeah.

01:37:45.740 --> 01:37:45.980
What?

01:37:47.040 --> 01:37:47.960
Well, no children.

01:37:48.660 --> 01:37:49.100
Yeah.

01:37:49.480 --> 01:37:49.560
Yeah.

01:37:49.640 --> 01:38:19.080
Will should really, really like instrumental music. He should just not even listen to singing. He's so touchy. He's so pitchy about singing. Which is funny because they talk about a ton of bands that sing with clean vocals. Right. His number one band has clean vocals. Dirty. No, I will say that Ashen, by the way, I did buy it. And I paid a little extra money for it.

01:38:19.640 --> 01:38:49.080
But the last EP that Ashton Horner put out, it was a five-song EP. The first four songs had no clean singing, and it was absolutely beautiful, mesmerizing black metal. And then about halfway through the fifth song, they put in the clean singing. So, Trevor, you did awesome through four songs. I like how quickly you're ready to dump somebody. You're like, this is the greatest EP out there. Fucking douchebags. No, no.

01:38:49.100 --> 01:38:50.000
I mean, I mean,

01:38:50.000 --> 01:38:52.860
I have this ongoing joke. Yes.

01:38:53.140 --> 01:38:54.560
Because I was actually honest with them.

01:38:54.620 --> 01:38:57.380
And I, I, I do not like the clean single national horde.

01:38:58.100 --> 01:38:58.560
Everything else.

01:38:58.720 --> 01:38:59.260
Ashen horde does.

01:38:59.580 --> 01:39:00.860
I absolutely love.

01:39:00.960 --> 01:39:02.520
So I, I was pleased.

01:39:03.260 --> 01:39:04.600
They put out a five song EP,

01:39:05.150 --> 01:39:06.180
the first four songs,

01:39:06.760 --> 01:39:07.520
no clean sing.

01:39:07.700 --> 01:39:10.660
And they were magnificent in my opinion.

01:39:12.620 --> 01:39:13.680
I just bought the,

01:39:13.800 --> 01:39:15.520
that's all I got to say about that.

01:39:15.810 --> 01:39:18.840
And I did buy the Australian wildfire.

01:39:22.240 --> 01:39:48.900
I adopted a koala. Nocleantalking.com. Yeah, Jen and I both adopted koalas. How do you adopt a koala? Fuck. You can go online and you can adopt it from the koala hospital. Oh, shit. The money goes to help them. The two that we got were both severely burned. Yeah, I mean, I gave strictly to animals, but if I can fucking adopt one of those guys, I'm all for it. He's not going to stay at my house or anything.

01:39:49.860 --> 01:40:18.700
He'll stay in Australia. But if he came to visit for a few days, I would gladly take one. Wouldn't it be funny if you got a call with John and they were like, when can you come and pick this guy up? Actually, Jay, I'll be like, we're at Dulles Airport right now. How do we get to your house? Did you ever see John, that comedian who has the news show on HBO? John Oliver. He brutalized Russell Crowe a couple of times on his show. And Russell Crowe,

01:40:18.980 --> 01:40:48.020
Made a huge donation to some animal hospital in Australia. It's the John Oliver Ward for gay koala bears or something like that. I can't remember what it was, but it's like that or koala bears with AIDS or something. When you say the guy who had the news show, I thought you said the guy who had the nude show. I was like, what the fuck? How did I miss this? Sit down. You're about to learn something new about me. What's the address for that?

01:40:48.980 --> 01:41:18.460
The Nude Show or The Koala Bears? Both. Just reminding Matt, I'll send it to you, Matt. The Nude Koala Show. Wait, what? All right, so our next item. We love to bitch about this place. This is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And the fan vote for the class of 2020 has ended. And Judas Priest came in fifth place.

01:41:18.980 --> 01:41:48.340
There was no love for Motorhead or Thin Lizzy. And there's a lot of dumb motherfuckers out there that like Dave Matthews. A lot of Christ. I didn't even see that. Yeah. Dave Matthews. I voted. I tried to vote every single day for it myself. And I was worried about Priest. But here's what I think is awesome about this fan vote is that it means absolutely nothing because they will choose who they want. Yeah. And it's still Biggie, whatever his name was.

01:41:48.720 --> 01:42:15.440
could still, while he finished fourth at a 15, or bottom four at a 15, could still get in there, and Priest could still get knocked out. So it's all bullshit. But it's shocking that somebody like Pat Benatar has to go through this to get into the Hall of Fame, whether you like her or not. Can we just stop pretending it's called the Rock Roll Hall of Fame? Yeah, it's a joke. It's an absolute joke. There's rap musicians and stuff.

01:42:19.220 --> 01:42:48.520
There is. We need to start one. There is one out now. Actually, they've done like two or three inductions. It's on my Facebook page. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I saw something about that. It used to be called the... Wait, John, you're the curator of the Medal Hall of Fame? It's on your Facebook page? That's awesome. Why did you not tell me this? It is. Rush is the first band in. Can we come to the ceremony? I thought you said it was a Medal Hall of Fame. Yeah. That's why all my bands are in.

01:42:50.880 --> 01:43:18.520
No, there is one. Apparently, it's obviously very small. And I think Eddie Trunks involved. So, you know, like UFO and Thindlessy went in first. Yeah, I'll take it. Yeah. All right. So, there's a new Carcass song floating around. It came out on a decibel flexi. Like a dumbass, I didn't write the name down. What's the name of the song?

01:43:18.720 --> 01:43:48.260
Under the Scalpel Blade. Yeah. Very carcass-y themed song. It's not on their SoundCloud yet for some reason. I thought it was. Maybe I looked in the wrong place somehow. I listened to it on YouTube earlier. Yeah, okay. Maybe just YouTube. Do you know where it is on? It's my number one album for 2020. Oh, I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's funny. I'm driving it out. Yeah, exactly.

01:43:48.720 --> 01:44:17.500
It's coming. It'll be. I bet you it'll be here early. For summer. Yeah. Well, the thing of this one, though, I read that Jeff Walker wasn't crazy about this song. And he said it was a slow throwaway number that carcass cobbled together. I don't know if this was. I can get behind that. I get that. I get that. It won't even be on the record, is what you said. Most of the decibel flexes, I think they want them to not be. Yeah, they can. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. But if that's the throwaway, because I love the song, I'm really excited to see what's going to be on the album.

01:44:20.160 --> 01:44:48.700
It'll be great. It'll be a lister. Count on it. Yeah, of course. Yeah. They just posted their plane in Dallas tonight. I don't know why that matters. And they showed some warm-up stuff. And I sat and watched it on Facebook. Just watched their sound check. The sound of Matt's face rubbing against his microphone. So, like, when I knew... And so, a couple years ago, I stopped getting the flexes and I thought, this'll be fine. And then they said, oh, Kirkus is going to

01:44:48.740 --> 01:45:18.340
I knew this fucking day was going to come around. I regret not doing the flexing. Well, you know, most of us probably got two of them. I know I did. I did. So I went back and I did. Why do you guys get two of them? Because there was issues. Well, there was apparently an issue with some of them that were damaged. And so they sent out an extra one with the next issue. But mine were both fine. Fuck me. So, you know, if you're nice, maybe I'll try to remember to bring one to Decibel Philly.

01:45:18.720 --> 01:45:48.060
I love you. Stop being so bitchy. Mostly just remind me and I will pack it. I can't stop being a bitch, but I will remind you. But when it came to be that I wasn't going to get that, I listened to Surgical Steel and then I listened to Surgical Steel and then I listened to Surgical Steel over and over and over. I can't shut it off. I'm like, this is a fucking masterpiece. Anyways. I don't know if I've ever told you this, but our drummer gave me the most amazing birthday gift.

01:45:48.720 --> 01:46:16.900
Oh my god, look at that. A couple years ago. So it's got this signed, this insert here, and it's got a picture disc and there's a poster. Is that from when they played in Philly? It's a Decibel Tour edition. God, no, I was, ah, I was. I haven't even opened this. I bought Surgical Steel on black vinyl. I just keep this sealed up just because it's got the signatures and stuff. I had the vinyl and then I melted it down and shot it into my veins.

01:46:21.720 --> 01:46:48.700
I just sent you guys under the scalpel blade is 320 KPBS on the chat so you can just download it thank you so I don't know where the hell I got that file I've heard some of it I just haven't heard all of it because I kept running into this thing that had like a wall on it and be like this is all you get buddy so and it sounded great to me what I heard I heard maybe a minute of it yeah it's great I mean we all love carcass I'm sure they're gonna be high on the list I don't think it's gonna be Jade no

01:46:52.659 --> 01:46:56.140
So going to the opposite end of the spectrum here

01:46:59.860 --> 01:47:06.140
Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John collaborated on the title track for Ozzy's new album Ordinary Man

01:47:09.239 --> 01:47:12.760
This is the third song to be released, the first song Under the Graveyard

01:47:13.000 --> 01:47:16.960
I am a huge fan of. I was surprised but I really like this song

01:47:18.320 --> 01:47:46.920
Second Song, Something About Hell or something with a slash on it. It's fucking terrible. And following suit, this song is fucking terrible. I don't like it. And I think George nailed it when he said Ozzy has more bad records than he has good records now. And that's been true before this one. I think it was George that said that. I'm not even interested. He's all used up. I don't give a fuck. No, no, he can't.

01:47:46.980 --> 01:48:16.560
Okay, so one thought, reading Symptoms of the Universe kind of covered the whole Sabbath catalog. And there was a point where they're like, oh yeah, Ozzy went on to have this career that was far surpassed Black Sabbath at the time. And I thought, oh fuck, I guess that really did happen. But it's so hard for me to think about like, Ozzy had a more successful career. Like, to me, Black Sabbath is unjudgeable. Yes, there was a lot of shit that happened, you know. I mean, for me, post-sabotage,

01:48:18.360 --> 01:48:46.900
Excluding the Dio stuff, you know, this guy named Tony Martin, who I had no idea sang on a ton of albums. And actually, was it Born Again? Yeah. Ian Gillen, yeah. Ian Gillen. I actually kind of liked that at times. But I mean, I didn't realize there was just so much shit. I didn't realize that Tony Iommi has been the sole member of that band for all these years. But to think that Ozzy had a more successful career on his own than Black Sabbath. He was massive in the 80s.

01:48:46.960 --> 01:49:15.900
Yeah, exactly. For a period of time. It's like mind-blowing. But fuck, that's right. I mean, Die of a Madman, Blizzard of Oz, The Ultimate Sin. Like, oh, fuck yeah, that was some really good shit. But it was funny. Like, I was thinking that in my head the last few weeks, and then George, you made that comment. Like, he's had more shitty albums than better albums. You know? I mean, true. I mean, absolutely. As far as I'm concerned, everything after Bark at the Moon, with the possible exception of No Rest for the Wicked, everything else I don't care for. Yeah.

01:49:15.960 --> 01:49:44.840
So this is a good point. Just like you were saying, Jay. What is your last good Ozzy album? For me, it's Spark at the Moon. And to a slightly lesser extent, No Rest for the Wicked. But just because that was the last one with Jakey Lee. But it really started to be pop metal at that point. Zach is on No Rest for the Wicked. Or no, I meant, what's the one I'm talking about? Ultimate Sin. Thank you. The one with the weird fucking cover.

01:49:45.980 --> 01:50:15.940
I went all the way to No More Tears. I just don't like this. I went one more than you. This one goes to one more. I don't know if I ever told you guys this story. Stay away to 11. I had a friend who worked for MTV and it was right when the Osbournes started. And he told me this story about how when they were moving and like they literally were moving into the mansion at the beginning of the series, this house that they lived in throughout the series. So they're moving all

01:50:15.980 --> 01:50:44.560
There's personal shit and stuff. And one of the kids working on the show saw this memorabilia and they said, was Ozzy in a band or something? Jesus Christ. And I don't mean, they knew Ozzy was a singer, but they didn't even know about Black Sabbath. That's sad. Yeah, he's more of a personality now than an actual musician. But Black Sabbath was not on their radar. That was history. They didn't even know. You could have told them he was in The Who. Yeah, to be honest, I don't really even listen to a lot of Ozzy solo stuff.

01:50:45.960 --> 01:51:15.940
They would be with Jay, like maybe Bark at the Moon. But I mean, if I'm going to listen to Ozzy, I'm going to listen to Black Sabbath. So I do think Diary of Mad Men is one of the greatest metal bits of all time. The first two albums I still listen to a lot, actually. Yeah, I put them both on. Weirdly enough, my favorite Ozzy album is No Rest for the Wicked. I actually don't mind that. I like that album. I like that album. Start to Finish is just solid heavy metal. Yeah. Well, I like the first two, like John. They're just

01:51:18.580 --> 01:51:22.960
I like speaking of the devil.

01:51:24.380 --> 01:51:25.560
The devil is awesome.

01:51:25.840 --> 01:51:26.080
Yeah.

01:51:26.400 --> 01:51:27.860
It's a fucking cool record.

01:51:28.060 --> 01:51:28.100
I,

01:51:28.160 --> 01:51:28.540
it was,

01:51:30.900 --> 01:51:31.540
I bought,

01:51:31.960 --> 01:51:32.100
um,

01:51:32.180 --> 01:51:32.900
die of a madman.

01:51:33.100 --> 01:51:34.700
And I think before I ever had blizzard of Oz,

01:51:34.720 --> 01:51:34.900
I got,

01:51:35.260 --> 01:51:35.340
um,

01:51:35.560 --> 01:51:36.040
speak of the devil.

01:51:36.280 --> 01:51:39.020
Cause they had just come out and I loved it.

01:51:39.140 --> 01:51:40.900
And then it made me go buy the night ranger record.

01:51:40.940 --> 01:51:41.440
And I was like,

01:51:41.500 --> 01:51:41.640
okay,

01:51:41.760 --> 01:51:41.820
yeah,

01:51:41.880 --> 01:51:41.980
no,

01:51:42.020 --> 01:51:42.460
I don't like it.

01:51:43.360 --> 01:51:44.860
It was only the first night rangers.

01:51:44.920 --> 01:52:14.900
The First One's Okay. I saw Night Ranger this summer, man. Sorry. I saw him a couple years ago. And they played Crazy Drain. It wasn't bad. I'm sure they were fine. I just... Oh, Brad Gillis is still getting to see live. Yeah, it was awesome, but my introduction to Brad Gillis was Speak of the Devil, and I was just like... And he's in this other band. I'm like, oh, I gotta go check this band out. They were followed by Pat Benatar. Jay, my introduction to Brad Gillis was Diary of a Batman Tour. So, that means...

01:52:14.940 --> 01:52:44.300
How late in the tour was it, do you think? Like how long after Randy died did they? Because they didn't wait that long before they went back out. It was, is it Bernie Torme? Was that his name? Yeah. Who originally replaced him, but that only lasted short. And then Brad Gillis took over. So I was only like four months after. Yeah, because I don't think they were off the road for more than a month or two. Not long. And being that Brad Gillis is from the East Bay, it was kind of a home show for him. It was kind of weird. I've got,

01:52:44.940 --> 01:53:14.900
I've got John a show from that tour on DVD which I'd be happy to mail to you if you like it's it's with Brad Gillis oh yeah I'm down it's totally worth watching so and then and then I surprisingly saw Night Ranger open for Sammy Hagar at the Cal Palace in Daly City California well they're Cal Far they have Bay Area band Night Ranger yeah they're all from the Bay Area yeah okay can we talk about Randy for one second no always more like more specifically Randy's Dev on the plane yeah so I thought like

01:53:14.920 --> 01:53:44.700
Randy died in a plane crash. I didn't realize that there was like some fuckery going on in that plane. The bus driver was like, hey, I can fly a plane. But like what I read in that book was like, somebody said like Randy was trying to like, I can't remember if it was like the pilot was trying to crash the plane or something. He was doing like low. He was like, you know, what do you call that when you like buzz the tower? They were trying to buzz the bus and they did it a couple of times. So they were doing it because everybody was,

01:53:44.920 --> 01:54:14.740
Drunk and trying to sleep it off on the bus. No, but the airline pilot, the airline, the plane pilot, the pilot was trying to kill his wife. Well, they speculated that. That's what it was. She was on the bus. That's what she was on the bus. That's a weird way to set a killer. And Randy, who dressed weird, was trying to not make that happen. And then kaput. Yeah. Well, I mean, we can't, we can't really know the story because everybody on the plane,

01:54:15.360 --> 01:54:15.680
Right.

01:54:17.460 --> 01:54:18.480
But I know Ozzy was on the bus.

01:54:18.480 --> 01:54:19.260
I didn't know any of that.

01:54:19.260 --> 01:54:19.780
Playing at the bus.

01:54:20.240 --> 01:54:21.360
Yeah, it is a weird story.

01:54:22.980 --> 01:54:25.620
But Ozzy was on the bus, and I assume, I think Sharon was on the bus.

01:54:25.760 --> 01:54:26.740
They were all on the bus.

01:54:27.160 --> 01:54:30.660
I did not realize that Ozzy was going to, like, hightail it after that point, too.

01:54:31.860 --> 01:54:36.280
As far as the band, like, he was not interested in continuing to be with Ozzy.

01:54:37.000 --> 01:54:37.100
Yeah.

01:54:37.360 --> 01:54:39.100
He was going to be a classical guitarist.

01:54:39.200 --> 01:54:39.300
Yeah.

01:54:39.580 --> 01:54:40.620
He was actually done with metal.

01:54:41.340 --> 01:54:41.960
Didn't know that.

01:54:42.000 --> 01:55:11.820
I could remember reading interviews with him at the time. Very distinctly in Guitar Magazine. He was like, yeah, after this tour. He would, at every stop of the tour that he could find a classical guitar teacher, he would take a lesson. He would just say, here's kind of where I'm at. He would take a lesson. He was so ready to fucking quit. He grew up in a family that was all music teachers, and he grew up as a classical musician. That's awesome. Yeah, and not the Yngwie Malmsteen pocket.

01:55:12.000 --> 01:55:40.480
I think he was more like an Andres Segova type classical guitar player. Like the D thing, you know? Yeah, he really wanted to all ten fingers had to be moving, you know? Yeah. Well, I wish he was on this song. I was like, hey, Elton John's on here. Maybe it won't suck. Oh, no, no, it sucks. Yeah, I'm not. Who is the guitar player? It's that Greek guy.

01:55:42.000 --> 01:56:11.620
Or no, not Gus, but the other guy, the anger guy. Wait, no, that's Megadeth, isn't it? I have no idea. It doesn't matter. The song blows. Pretty much everything Ozzy's done in the last two decades has blown big floppy donkey dicks. So it's like, he's no longer the Prince of Darkness. Like, I hate to hate on Ozzy lately because he was such a phenomenal part of my childhood. But like, it's like,

01:56:12.000 --> 01:56:41.980
Ozzy's getting up there and he's kind of like there with Metallica now. You've jumped the shark. From Prince of Darkness to King of Donkey Dicks. Yeah. On the Prince of Donkey Dicks. When I hear about Ozzy doing new stuff, it's really like who gives a shit and how bad is this going to embarrass him? And why is Sharon just keep pushing him to do this crappy stuff? It'll be put together by some corporate fucking, you know, survey. I'll also say this, though, too, and I couldn't not be more

01:56:42.020 --> 01:56:44.580
I think I've mentioned this to you guys before but

01:56:45.100 --> 01:56:48.480
every time Ozzy kind of comes back around with something and then they start doing interviews

01:56:48.750 --> 01:57:09.180
and eventually there's been so many fucking documentaries if I have to listen and I'm not joking to how he was poor for the first five minutes of his life again I'm gonna fucking kill somebody I get so tired of that whole fucking like well Ozzy didn't have anything yeah well he spent the next 65 years fucking richer than God so shut the fuck up if he wasn't rich he was on drugs and it didn't matter

01:57:09.200 --> 01:57:37.920
Yeah, what did he do? No, but I'm not joking. I get so tired of that. Just think about how rich he would be if he didn't do, if he wasn't hooked on cocaine for like four decades. And seriously, what the fuck is it? Sharon Osbourne owns like Black Sabbath? Like the rights to that shit? What the fuck? That's why heaven and hell exists. I think there was some time when Tony was a little financially strapped and they bought it from him. Because Tony owned it for a long time.

01:57:38.760 --> 01:57:42.440
I just finished his uh Iron Man book

01:57:44.400 --> 01:57:52.560
hmm Jesus I think we gotta move on from this George okay yeah all right we got two more news items both of them

01:57:53.080 --> 01:58:01.360
are about new albums the first one is uh My Dying Bride are going to release a new album called The Ghost of Orion on March 6th

01:58:03.840 --> 01:58:07.760
yeah I mean I'm into this uh there's one of the first metal bands I really got into so I'm always

01:58:09.140 --> 01:58:36.040
I know Will hates it because he's bored by it. He's sleepy. Their catalog has been pretty hit or miss for me, but I thought the first track off the new album sounded pretty good. Yeah, I thought it was all right. Sounded like My Dying Bride, so I'm fine with it. And the next one, Will's not going to like this one either. Cannibal Corpse are preparing to start work on a new album, hopefully due this year. Can I ask,

01:58:38.740 --> 01:59:07.740
And his name has been in my head a lot lately. Who's the fucking guy with Pat? Has there been any update about his situation? I was wondering about that too. Is Rutan going to do the guitars for this album? I don't know. The only stated I've seen is that they stand behind Pat. Someone let us know what the fuck is up. The story though about the announcement of the record sure mentioned Rutan a lot and I think they made it sound like he was going to be on it. And the fact that they didn't really mention Pat

01:59:07.780 --> 01:59:11.000
I just don't even know if he's even still in jail or what.

01:59:11.540 --> 01:59:12.560
He's out on jail.

01:59:13.640 --> 01:59:21.780
He's out, yeah. It's weird to me that there's no mention of Pat when they're making this announcement. It definitely leads me to believe he's not going to be recording with the band.

01:59:23.040 --> 01:59:28.660
That would be a big news item. Like, Pat's coming back, we're recording this album. Like, why wouldn't you say that?

01:59:29.240 --> 01:59:37.080
But the last thing I heard was that, and maybe they just spliced an old quote from a year ago into now,

01:59:37.340 --> 02:00:07.220
But when I was reading, I just read the Metal Injection news story, and they said that, you know, we stand behind Pat. We're all with Pat. It's like, you know. Okay. So, but I don't know if that was a recent quote saying that. Yeah. Yeah. Or that was some old quote pulled because, you know. Because they kind of said that right when it happened. I don't know many metal news sites that are, like, to be honest, that reputable. I mean, I,

02:00:07.940 --> 02:00:09.500
I suspect though that he's still

02:00:09.640 --> 02:00:11.440
facing charges. I mean he could be

02:00:11.480 --> 02:00:12.380
getting ready to do something.

02:00:13.200 --> 02:00:15.320
I think he's out on bail and he's definitely

02:00:15.500 --> 02:00:17.000
he's going to go to jail. No he hasn't been convicted

02:00:17.080 --> 02:00:19.260
I mean he's definitely he hasn't had a trial yet

02:00:19.420 --> 02:00:21.580
because we've heard nothing about the outcome.

02:00:21.620 --> 02:00:22.840
We would have heard that yeah.

02:00:23.300 --> 02:00:25.180
The other thing is he's going to go to trial

02:00:25.400 --> 02:00:27.380
and he will go to jail. He might be mentally

02:00:27.620 --> 02:00:28.920
unstable too though I mean I think

02:00:29.380 --> 02:00:30.980
at the very least like what he did

02:00:31.500 --> 02:00:33.520
could have been fueled by death or god knows what

02:00:33.620 --> 02:00:35.580
but he also might have been fallen off

02:00:35.580 --> 02:00:36.280
the edge you know.

02:00:36.900 --> 02:01:06.160
Like truly. I mean, he ran into those people's house paranoid thinking the world was coming to destroy it or something. Yeah, I think he may have heard that Ozzy Elton John song earlier. Or just watched the first, well, all the seasons of the Osborns. There's a rumor that's coming back, by the way. Really? I heard that. And I think it's not a shaky rumor, I think. Oh, God. Elton John better be on it. Yeah.

02:01:09.360 --> 02:01:11.140
I'm the king of donkey dick

02:01:11.520 --> 02:01:13.680
I was an early watcher

02:01:13.780 --> 02:01:15.640
but the first couple seasons I thought were pretty great

02:01:15.840 --> 02:01:17.560
to be honest with you but then it just ruined

02:01:17.800 --> 02:01:18.580
everything after that

02:01:18.800 --> 02:01:20.960
well of course because you're fascinated by this

02:01:21.480 --> 02:01:22.280
because it was Ozzy

02:01:22.620 --> 02:01:24.260
you didn't have that much access to him

02:01:25.360 --> 02:01:26.600
Rockhead Rock or

02:01:27.620 --> 02:01:29.020
Rocketman would be Ozzyman

02:01:29.960 --> 02:01:30.660
and by the way

02:01:32.000 --> 02:01:33.240
that song doesn't do

02:01:33.440 --> 02:01:34.060
Elton John's

02:01:34.740 --> 02:01:36.160
legacy any favors either

02:01:36.180 --> 02:02:05.720
just to mention it. No. His band is called Donkey Rocket. I didn't know if you knew that. All right. Let's move on to the new releases. Of which there are few. I had to even throw some stuff on here that's just coming out in the next couple weeks because. Yeah. But.

02:02:06.180 --> 02:02:35.480
First up, we have the new album from Haunt called Mind Freeze. It's their third album. They're a Fresno traditional metal band. It's two of the guys from Beastmaker. Yeah, and they put a record out every five minutes, so this is not really new. No, not really, but I went and bought the catalog like a week or so ago. The Haunt or the Beastmaker? I already have the Beastmaker, the Haunt stuff. Do you like it?

02:02:36.180 --> 02:03:05.840
Yeah, I mean, it's okay. I was just looking for stuff that wasn't death metal after my year-end. Didn't Decibel have the Haunt record pretty high? The last one? Yeah, I think so. I don't get it. I really keep trying to get into them because all I ever hear is praise for their music, but this band doesn't do anything for me. The praise does not match. Is it Beastmaster or Beastmaker? Beastmaster is a great movie. Maker.

02:03:06.660 --> 02:03:36.120
Beastmaker. Some of that stuff's pretty good. I bought some of those EPs. Yeah. But the Haunt thing, I've tried Haunt a couple times too, and it's never, I've never. It's the vocals. No. It is subpar sophomore-ish vocals, in my opinion. I agree. It's the vocals, but it's just too 70s for me. I don't know. I don't know. There's something about the whole thing that it just does not sit well with me. I can't get through a song. Right. I can't listen to them because one of their album covers is almost exact carbon copy of a 80s.

02:03:36.180 --> 02:04:05.900
He's band called Juggernaut. It's the cover with the eyes. If you look at the band Juggernaut and their album cover with eyes, they're literally almost carbon copies. I'm like, what? Come on, man. That's kind of close. So I won't listen to him for that reason. All right. Well, let's move on to the next one, which is Lotus Thief and their third album, Oresteia. Close enough. They're sort of, I don't know what you might call them, like an ambient doom kind of thing.

02:04:05.960 --> 02:04:35.460
To me, it sounded like Lorena McKennett put out a metal album. It's got some post-metally parts, and she has some harsh vocals here and there. Yeah, I dig it, though. Yeah. I've liked their previous one. To me, it's like an avant-garde melodic post-metal with some doom in it, you know, and maybe some black metal in there as well. But I like the mix of male and female vocals in this one, and they do these lyrics that retell Greek tragedies, so that's kind of interesting to me as well. Pretty much the thing, yeah. It's fine.

02:04:35.540 --> 02:05:05.460
I thought it was really good. I liked it. Cool. Next up is a band called Unbounded Terror and their second album, Faith in Chaos, a Spanish death metal band. From Greece. From Greece. Nothing crazy about it. It was just one that I happened to think was all right and it was a new release. So there it is. I thought it was good, George. Yeah. You say second album, but their first album was 28 years ago. Was it really? I didn't notice that.

02:05:06.300 --> 02:05:34.440
Yeah, it's pretty solid, good, old-school death metal. I literally, I'm not kidding, I listened to about 30 seconds of this and I just bought it. To me, this was... That's what I meant to say, it's like album of the year. It's George Stile. Let's just say it's album of the day. All right, fair enough. Denising riffs on it, it's really solid all the way through. I was surprised I'd never heard of them, but of course they've been out of the game for 28 years.

02:05:35.540 --> 02:06:04.340
Okay, so next we have the new album from Midnight, Rebirth and Blasphemy. This isn't out yet. We don't even have a promo. I think there's been like maybe one or so. There's like three songs on band cameras. I'm not really huge on them. I know a lot of people are. They're sort of a black speed band or something. It's like, I don't know, vaguely motorhead-ish to me. Not that that would be a bad thing, but I don't know. They're all right, and they're going to be at decibel, right? Aren't they?

02:06:04.530 --> 02:06:04.620
Yes.

02:06:05.560 --> 02:06:34.720
Yeah, I like Midnight. There's never really been a band I listen to regularly, but I think they're pretty adept at putting together thrash, black metal. I hear some punk in there. It's a pretty unique sound. And the production on the three songs that are up are really good. But the thing that gets me about this band, the cover for this new album is very intriguing to me. It's a watercolor painting of a naked girl with a knife, and she's

02:06:34.760 --> 02:07:04.720
Merged at the waist with a falling lamb. I'm very confused and compelled at the same time. The last one had a similarly confusing code, quite frankly. It's really weird. My two cents. Sorry, man. I'm just, I'm going to get hammered. I will say this, that Midnight played Atlas last year. And holy fuck, that was

02:07:04.760 --> 02:07:34.660
a fun show. These guys absolutely bring it. And I was never a big, like Midnight was just like one of those bands I've heard of in the underground, but just not really aware of too much. Like I've heard of them, not aware of them, didn't really know their music. Absolutely one of the funnest shows I've ever, ever come to my brewery. And so when I went back and now that I'm listening to the three songs they have on band,

02:07:34.760 --> 02:08:04.620
I cannot wait for this. This will be a lister. Wow. Maybe maybe decibel will change my mind. I feel fairly certain they played decibel pre-fest two years ago. Am I making that up? I also feel like they were on a decibel fest. Maybe that's what I'm thinking. A decibel tour. Oh, a decibel tour. Maybe that's what I'm thinking of it. I feel like it's the one that was with the German speed model band. You're going to have to narrow it down, Matt.

02:08:04.760 --> 02:08:07.140
It starts with a K.

02:08:09.560 --> 02:08:09.920
Creator.

02:08:11.980 --> 02:08:12.700
Oh, yeah, by the way.

02:08:12.730 --> 02:08:13.400
The Creator Tour.

02:08:16.280 --> 02:08:18.420
Yeah, I can see how they would be really good live.

02:08:18.670 --> 02:08:21.940
I think that their songs are going to translate well to the stage.

02:08:22.220 --> 02:08:26.040
So I'm actually looking forward to it because I feel like listening to these three songs,

02:08:26.090 --> 02:08:28.400
I'm getting into them a little bit more than I have in the past.

02:08:28.740 --> 02:08:32.200
Why do I think this is out there by you guys?

02:08:32.330 --> 02:08:33.720
Are these guys from Philadelphia or something?

02:08:34.240 --> 02:08:34.580
Cleveland.

02:08:34.640 --> 02:09:02.920
Yeah. Yeah. Same difference. So next we have. Close. Close. Next we have the third album from Obsidian Tongue. This is a Portland main band and it's the main band of Brendan from Thross and Blot. Oh, I didn't realize that, George. Yes. Well, there's only one track up. I thought it was decent atmospheric black metal with a lot of whispering.

02:09:04.640 --> 02:09:34.060
If we get the promo, I would be open to listening to their brand of hush metal. Yeah. Well, John and I saw them at the Shadow Woods, and I don't know if that's the case with the album, but it was just guitar and drums and vocals. Okay. I'll be honest with you, I don't know. Brian is what? He is the guitarist? Brendan. He's the bass player in Thrasenblatt. Bass player that plays what in this band? Guitar. And does vocals.

02:09:36.200 --> 02:10:03.100
Yeah, I didn't realize that, but of course you would, George. Of course I would. All right. And then we've got the new album from Thy Catafalque. I'm assuming this is pronounced naive. This is the eighth album from a Hungarian avant-garde metal band. It's just basically this one guy. And he's been very interesting in the past, so I'm looking forward to this. Yeah. Does he live in Scotland now, I think? I don't know.

02:10:03.440 --> 02:10:33.400
And I feel like he is in the band Mastiff as well, which I very much am a fan of. I don't think so. I didn't know what to expect with this, George. I never even heard of this guy, this band. It was super happy Hungarian synth funk metal, and it was weird, but I kind of dug it at the same time. Go through his catalog, Dan Markeson, because it's all over the place. He does atmospheric black metal, too. And there's one other one I want to

02:10:33.440 --> 02:10:36.240
I didn't put on the list because I just heard it this afternoon

02:10:37.440 --> 02:10:39.400
is from a band called

02:10:39.900 --> 02:10:40.420
Fight School

02:10:41.320 --> 02:10:42.720
and their album

02:10:43.010 --> 02:10:45.880
it's an EP really it's Profane Meltdowns

02:10:46.240 --> 02:10:47.600
and I've already been in contact

02:10:47.860 --> 02:10:49.740
with the singer whose name is Butch Marino

02:10:50.360 --> 02:10:51.820
and we're going to try and get

02:10:51.940 --> 02:10:53.920
him on an upcoming episode

02:10:54.780 --> 02:10:55.460
alright so yeah

02:10:56.120 --> 02:10:57.960
check that out it's up on Bandcamp

02:10:58.660 --> 02:11:00.020
alright so next

02:11:00.260 --> 02:11:01.600
up is a new thing that

02:11:01.600 --> 02:11:30.100
that Marc-a-san came up with, and I'm going to let him talk about it. Well, we were looking to try to do some new items for the cast, and one of the things that I mentioned was like, let's have two albums and have them battle out on the cast. And I think it was something that Will said that kind of prompted me to think of it. So George and I were talking about it, and she named it Metal Thunderdome. Two bands and one band leaves.

02:11:31.600 --> 02:12:00.880
Yeah, and I got to select the first one. That's the last one. That's awesome. Man, I really want to watch that movie again. So I got to select the first one, and it's hard to think about. I want to do something that gave me a little bit of pause that made me think, like, what would I really choose if I had to? And the albums I chose were both released in 1983. They're both classics. This is going to be like Jay trying to choose which one of his kids he loves best. I know.

02:12:01.220 --> 02:12:04.120
I almost feel like you did this to me on purpose these are two of my very

02:12:04.350 --> 02:12:09.120
favorite records of all time I know and I thought of you Jay as well because you wrote that

02:12:09.640 --> 02:12:19.020
fantastic article on Ronnie James Dio for our site go there now metalheads podcast or what is it we are metalheads.com

02:12:19.340 --> 02:12:31.200
metalheadspodcast.com works too so anyways so we're doing a battle between two albums and the cool thing about this is we're going to talk about it here but we're also going to put a poll on Facebook so

02:12:31.220 --> 02:13:01.180
You Can Vote on which album you think is going should win again these were both released in 1983 they're both classics we're talking about Dio's Holy Diver versus Merciful Fates Melissa and uh I think I'm gonna have to have Jay go first just because he said that and it's a need to torture him so Jay do you have you selected a winner yeah do you know yeah go uh do I just explain my winner

02:13:01.200 --> 02:13:31.180
Yeah, explain whatever you want, man. Okay, well, first off, my love for Dio is well known. I guess. I mean, we all have a love for Dio, so take that with a grain of salt. But that happens to be Dio's best solo record, as far as I'm concerned. And there's a lot of... All of Dio's records have great songs on them. There's no bad songs on Holy Diver. And that's... I'm going to take a sharp left turn, though, and just tell you that, for me, the straight-up number one absolute winner is Merciful Faith, Melissa, because I just...

02:13:34.480 --> 02:13:36.620
It has everything to do with

02:13:40.440 --> 02:13:42.960
when I first heard it in my life and how fucking

02:13:43.560 --> 02:13:45.320
much it creeped me out the first time I heard it

02:13:45.320 --> 02:13:47.460
but just how I never get tired of it

02:13:47.960 --> 02:13:51.700
the time signature changes

02:13:52.180 --> 02:13:54.900
and each riff is more important

02:13:54.980 --> 02:13:56.440
and devastating than the last

02:13:56.480 --> 02:13:58.660
and it's got such an atmosphere to it

02:13:58.660 --> 02:14:01.180
that like in this song Melissa

02:14:01.180 --> 02:14:31.160
when a certain riff comes to a grinding halt and it's like a pregio kind of clean riff and then they move into another one it's it there's some feedback and the feedback sounds like a train in hell coming to a stop and and i say that because that whole record is full of that shit there's an atmosphere to it that every even little mistake is important on their record i honestly think it's one of the greatest metal it is my personal favorite metal record of all time so it's so funny that you pitted those two against each other because

02:14:31.200 --> 02:15:01.160
because Holy Diver beats almost every other thing. And it's just one of those moments in time. You can never recapture what happened on that record. And I love King Diamond. It's so amazing they came out the same year. I did not know that Melissa was your favorite all-time metal album. It really is. It's funny, George and I were talking a couple months back and he asked me and that was my answer. He was like, what is your favorite record all-time? But in any case, the only other thing I'd mention about it is

02:15:01.200 --> 02:15:31.160
that we've talked about the beginnings of death metal and stuff like that and it was really hard to get genres down for a while and you know so basically like i still think possessed record is the first death metal record but i remember when i first saw um this album advertised in a magazine and melissa and it said black metal danish black metal yeah and it was because for a while black metal just meant you're singing about satan you know for at least a year or two so anyway i

02:15:31.180 --> 02:15:34.300
I just remember that and honestly and it was exactly what moved me to order it

02:15:35.120 --> 02:15:39.820
that sounds cool and I also think it's one of the greatest record covers of all time metal

02:15:39.950 --> 02:15:45.280
record covers of all times it's fucking perfect I like that you said order it because that's what

02:15:45.280 --> 02:16:01.160
you had to do in the 80s well and I've told this story on here before and I'm gonna pass it on to the next person but the way I had to order it was I lived in a small town and there was a video store and because this guy and it was like a video rental store but he was in distribution because of all that stuff

02:16:01.180 --> 02:16:27.600
I would go to this guy and that's how I got like Hell Awaits and Destruction Sentence of Death and blah blah blah and literally I would order things and then two weeks later I'd get a call from this guy and be like your records here man. He didn't even sell records he just ordered these records for me. So that's how I got a lot of these early a lot of the early releases. The only other thing I'll throw out there is that there's a remaster of this album and don't buy the remaster it's got one extra vocal in it that fucks the whole fucking thing up and it's in the song Melissa.

02:16:31.180 --> 02:16:31.820
came from.

02:16:32.269 --> 02:16:34.380
But the original, you really got to have a copy of the original.

02:16:35.559 --> 02:16:35.860
That's it.

02:16:36.400 --> 02:16:36.519
All right.

02:16:37.000 --> 02:16:39.920
And honestly, it's no contest as much as I love Holy Diver.

02:16:40.219 --> 02:16:40.420
That's.

02:16:41.199 --> 02:16:41.740
All right.

02:16:42.380 --> 02:16:45.080
And I also predict if people vote on the website, they're going to go the other way.

02:16:47.160 --> 02:16:48.599
Yeah, we're going to put the poll up for sure.

02:16:49.099 --> 02:16:51.260
Because you can do two things on the poll.

02:16:51.380 --> 02:16:52.960
I don't think you can do more than that on Facebook.

02:16:52.960 --> 02:16:54.420
No, that's what sucks about it.

02:16:54.420 --> 02:16:57.059
Because we've wanted to do ones with four and you can only do two.

02:16:57.440 --> 02:17:00.260
You can do many things on the poll.

02:17:00.280 --> 02:17:28.559
Well, what do you think, John? What's your choice? So I'm getting a little tired, so I'm a little grumpy. So this will be perfect for me. Wait, that's your excuse? Now I'm grumpy. You're always grumpy. Just like Matt's always bitchy. I'm a little extra. So the music, Melissa, I like way more than the music on Holy Diver.

02:17:30.300 --> 02:17:59.940
As much as I like it, it's still a derivative of, to me, of Dio's time in Black Sabbath. It just sounds like that to me. But I think the music on Melissa is amazing. I just cannot do his whales. He sings on the lower register. He has whales? I just love it. But when he goes to the house, when he makes Axl Rose look like a kid with those high reaches, I just can't do it.

02:18:00.500 --> 02:18:01.940
So then again,

02:18:02.260 --> 02:18:07.920
I hate Vivian Campbell and he's the dude who just trashed Dio every chance he got with Dio

02:18:07.940 --> 02:18:08.360
was alive.

02:18:08.360 --> 02:18:10.240
Then he was Dio's best friend after Dio died.

02:18:11.420 --> 02:18:12.820
And then a Dio tribute band.

02:18:13.320 --> 02:18:13.420
Yeah.

02:18:13.800 --> 02:18:14.980
It's just like Def Leppard.

02:18:16.320 --> 02:18:16.820
That's another.

02:18:16.980 --> 02:18:17.099
Yeah.

02:18:17.400 --> 02:18:17.639
Don't get me.

02:18:19.940 --> 02:18:21.000
Pour some sugar on me,

02:18:21.420 --> 02:18:21.500
John.

02:18:22.480 --> 02:18:22.639
Yeah.

02:18:22.780 --> 02:18:24.179
Well come to Southeast.

02:18:26.800 --> 02:18:55.940
So I begrudgingly went with Holy Diver just because I love Dio so much, but it's only because the King goes a little too high for me on the vocals. Otherwise, that album would have won easily just because I think the music is amazing on that album. And it's not black metal. It's just a straight metal album, which is what I love about it so much. Absolutely. It is just a straight metal. It's not a black metal record. And the playing is just outstanding for everybody on the album, too, on top of that.

02:18:56.019 --> 02:19:25.519
For that time, that was really, nobody was doing that. So it was cool. Groundbreaking. Hey, quick trivia question. And it answers itself because of what we're doing. But Metallica had to borrow instruments from a band when they were making Ride the Lightning in Denmark. Who was that band? Merciful Fate. Somebody stole all their equipment. And so Ride the Lightning was recorded with Merciful Fate's equipment.

02:19:26.019 --> 02:19:26.320
Yeah.

02:19:27.500 --> 02:19:27.860
Interesting.

02:19:28.620 --> 02:19:29.360
And when King Diamond,

02:19:29.540 --> 02:19:32.179
he had a very nice tribute yesterday,

02:19:32.460 --> 02:19:33.160
Neil, also.

02:19:33.200 --> 02:19:33.460
He did.

02:19:36.040 --> 02:19:36.620
Well, cool.

02:19:36.800 --> 02:19:38.800
I mean, this is kind of why I picked these two.

02:19:38.910 --> 02:19:41.840
I thought it would be a little bit tough to choose between them,

02:19:41.849 --> 02:19:42.740
and it seems like it is.

02:19:43.309 --> 02:19:44.440
So, Will, you're yawning.

02:19:44.519 --> 02:19:45.400
That means you're up next.

02:19:47.679 --> 02:19:49.900
This is the easiest thing I've ever done in my life.

02:19:50.220 --> 02:19:50.480
Dio.

02:19:53.540 --> 02:20:22.280
I am that weird guy on this podcast. I've never got Merciful Fate. I've never got King Diamond. I don't understand it. I do not like his vocals. That high-pitched, squeaking shit is like nails on a chalkboard. I'd kind of rather listen to Deaf Heaven. You could have just stopped after I'm the weird guy on this podcast. Seriously, the music is great.

02:20:23.560 --> 02:20:52.120
High Pitch, willing, screaming. I can't take it. I do not like it. I've never liked it. I'm sorry. You guys will hate me. I don't dislike. Let me say this. There's no King Diamond fan in the world who holds that against anybody. Because it is a threshold you have to get through. And you either get through it or you don't. And then it becomes wonderful. Let's not push it. Even Geddy Lee is like, man, that guy sings high.

02:20:54.260 --> 02:21:21.480
It's the same thing. At least with Geddy Lee, at some point I got through the vocals. I'm like, I can appreciate how groundbreaking at the time in the 70s and the 80s, how groundbreaking their music was. I can't say the same thing for King Diamond because I don't think their music was all that groundbreaking considering all the other stuff that was going around it. But when I listen to those vocals, I just can't do it. Dio, hands down, no matter what.

02:21:21.920 --> 02:21:51.620
Anyone who goes against what I'm about to say is wrong. Well, I agree with you. Well, I said the same thing. I just wasn't. I guess I wasn't as grumpy. How does grumpy as well? I love Dio. I absolutely love Dio. I just I can never, ever, ever. I just say never. I'm being a little bit bombastic at this point. But like I've heard merciful fate and king.

02:21:51.900 --> 02:22:21.880
I've been multiple times and just like, nah. Like when George texted me months ago and like, hey, King Diamond's playing in Baltimore on Ventures Day. Do you want to go? I'm like, no. I don't. You know, I'll say this, Will. I probably, and this, I mean, this dates back to 1983 in all honesty, but I think I rejected it the first three times I heard it. I bought it and I told my brother, this guy sings higher than Rob Halford. That was it. And then it's just late one night I put it on probably the first week that I

02:22:21.920 --> 02:22:51.300
I was like, oh, okay, I get it. I totally get this. But it's not something to get or not. I totally understand why it doesn't feel the same. In a weird sort of way, I think it is. I think it's one of those things like either you get it or you don't. Either you embrace it and you get it for its artistic value or you don't. And for whatever reason, and you guys know me, it just never stuck with me. Let's go from grumpy to bitchy.

02:22:51.920 --> 02:23:19.220
Yeah, holy diver versus Melissa. What do you got? So I feel like this is a great example of 9.999 versus 10. Two fabulous albums. I would already choose this album. By the way, that would be 9.9999 to.0001. We're talking about albums. Well, you've had your say. What he's saying is that they're very close. 69.1.

02:23:21.140 --> 02:23:50.720
I would already choose this album, but still the fact of that my wife hates metal and her name is Melissa, and I would choose Merciful Fates Melissa. I thought I was going to be alone. I was so worried about that. Think about that. Nice. Very cool. All right. And to everybody's point, the high pitch, it works for me. Not that Dio doesn't, because it's like, God damn, I love Dio.

02:23:50.760 --> 02:24:19.580
I mean, it's like, when did he ever do anything that was not superb? You know, it's a tough choice, but I would go with Mushroom Fate. Okay, this is working for me so far. Actually, you brought up a good point, Matt. I would actually make the argument, dare I say this? Dare you not? Dare I say this? I already like it. Was Rainbow ever better with or without Ronnie?

02:24:20.760 --> 02:24:50.580
Dare I say this? Was Black Sabbath music better with or without Ronnie? The three albums with Ronnie are pretty unbelievable. There's a couple albums with Ozzy. Two different bands. I don't even know how to have that argument. Which I ignore. It's two completely different bands. We'll save that one for the Black Sabbath. That is a good metal thunderdome though. Yeah.

02:24:50.740 --> 02:25:18.280
Black Sabbath versus Black Sabbath. Each one of us gets to choose. Why do it and just accept both for what they are and be happy? I do agree with John. They're two different bands that don't. Yes, okay, they start the same name. If I wake up and I see Tina Turner in my house, I'm going to be fucking pissed. George is now yawning. Holy Diver versus Melissa. What do you got, George? Well, I love both of these albums immensely.

02:25:20.760 --> 02:25:49.620
But recently in Baltimore, King Diamond refused my advances. So I'm going to have to go with Theo. Fair enough. Okay, so that puts us at three to two. So Markisan can either tie it or tie it up. And you know, I chose when Matt, you know, did statistics, which I already forgot because I'm drunk.

02:25:51.500 --> 02:26:18.080
It's very hard. That's why I picked this. Because I love these albums pretty equally. And musically, I think I love them equally. But, and this is what's going to put me over the top. You did this to yourself. I did this to myself. I didn't want to make it easy. Of course, it's easy for Will, but for the rest of it.

02:26:20.760 --> 02:26:50.380
I have to go with Dio. Just because I love the cover artwork better. Wow. You know, the truth is, is I can't, the truth is, is that I cannot feel bad about anybody's choice there. I mean, I love them both. It's just. You're still talking about Holy Diver, you know. Yeah. Absolutely. It's got Don't Talk to Strangers on it. Shame on the Night. Invisible. Yeah. You know, whenever I listen to either of these. Jerking the penis. And you know what? I've never gotten tired of either of them. No.

02:26:50.740 --> 02:27:18.480
There are records I probably won't ever necessarily put on again from start to finish. Records that you might be surprised. I don't think I'll ever listen to. Both of these still go on. At least every couple of months. Choosing a winner on this cast doesn't make the other album any less fantastic and classic. It's a matter of inches, really. It is. I will say this. That's a sound bite. I will say this.

02:27:20.760 --> 02:27:49.980
an acquired taste. There's no doubt about that. But Dio's an acquired taste too because the truth is a lot of people can't get on board with the whole Demons and Wizards thing. And a lot of people, he still seems cheesy to a lot of people. You guys, I know none of you guys seem that way, but trust me, there's a lot of guys who are like, oh, he's the perfect example of everything I hated on metal. You know? That sounds odd. That Rainbow in the Dark video is kind of hard to watch. Yeah, it is. It's terrible. I mean, they were literally like, we got a camera, let's just walk around. Hey, check it out, there's a roof.

02:27:51.660 --> 02:28:20.700
But yeah, that was really fun, actually, even though it was torturous. It was hard for me to even come up with that. I was like, should I put these two together? I don't know if it's worth doing. Because I feel like that one was a kick to my groin, I'll take the next one, if you guys don't mind. Actually, I was going to say, since we started with Markisan, why don't we go to Matt next and just work our way through? That way, sort of like when we did the Skull Crushers, we're like, who's next? We'll just go, we know we're in order. So you'll reveal it at the next script, Matt.

02:28:20.760 --> 02:28:21.200
Yes.

02:28:22.390 --> 02:28:26.620
The plan actually goes to do it every other cast, I think.

02:28:26.800 --> 02:28:29.360
So we're going to do six because there's six of us.

02:28:30.080 --> 02:28:31.460
So this is January cast.

02:28:31.720 --> 02:28:34.360
The next one will be March, May.

02:28:36.100 --> 02:28:38.240
Two beds into one bed leaves.

02:28:39.780 --> 02:28:40.840
I'm going to watch Mad Max.

02:28:41.020 --> 02:28:42.540
I'm going to go between now and then.

02:28:43.720 --> 02:28:44.000
That's why.

02:28:45.359 --> 02:28:49.280
Like I said, when this cast comes out, we'll also post a poll,

02:28:49.320 --> 02:29:13.620
and you can vote and then we'll see which one wins. Jate seems to think that Dio is going to run away with it but we'll see. We'll see what the listeners say. Because that was so painful can we change this from Battle Thunderdome to Sophie's Choice? I was going to call it Rosemary's Baby. All right let's move. I'm going to try and make it as stressful. Yeah. Yes. Let's move on to our top five.

02:29:50.199 --> 02:30:19.300
And we're going to start with Markisan. Okay. Yeah. My number five is Aries kingdom by the light of their destruction. They had an album. I didn't know that. Yeah. They play a thrashing death with big skin flaying wrists. Yeah. The formula is banned, but I don't think I took them seriously. I heard the album, but I don't think I considered it for my top 40 because the production for it is not that good to me. I feel like it could have been better, but I revisited it after my friend Garrett had it

02:30:19.340 --> 02:30:21.220
pretty high on his list that he shared with me.

02:30:21.710 --> 02:30:25.040
And he enjoys that kind of dirty, nasty sound for certain bands.

02:30:25.540 --> 02:30:27.320
He counts that as an attribute sometimes.

02:30:27.660 --> 02:30:32.700
So I've listened to it again and tried to listen to it from that perspective.

02:30:32.810 --> 02:30:34.460
And it's grown on me some more.

02:30:34.650 --> 02:30:43.480
I don't know if it would have made my list, but it's one that I definitely feel like I missed or didn't give a fair shot in 2019.

02:30:45.220 --> 02:30:45.360
Cool.

02:30:46.120 --> 02:30:46.320
Matt?

02:30:49.020 --> 02:31:18.560
My first three on this list are definitely things that I knew of, listened to, and it's kind of that, like, the idea of, like, oh, it's an amazing album, but it doesn't quite connect versus, you know, it totally connects. My number five, Rotting Christ, The Heretics. Really good album. It did not connect with me until, of course, after the year end. So, yeah. I don't know why it was on my list. I suck.

02:31:19.000 --> 02:31:48.260
Yeah, and it was on your mid-year list. Pretty high, right, George? Yeah, it was like 11 or something like that. I just fell off, as we say, in the business. I fell off for a lot, because I think it was Will's number one at the mid-year. Running Christ was not my number one, but it was high on both my mid-year and year-end. I thought it was number one on your mid-year, but I guess not. My number one mid-year was Throne Hammer.

02:31:49.020 --> 02:32:18.980
that it was like it's crickets ever no one's ever heard of it it was still high on my year end and it was not on anyone's list kind of like atlantean codex high on my list no one's ever heard of it so i i feel you mark us on yeah no i understand it's okay all right uh john uh yeah so my list i just kind of threw together

02:32:19.020 --> 02:32:48.900
I didn't really go to great lengths to find stuff I didn't listen to that I missed. And I got most of these pretty much in the last week. But I got this one from George. Even though I did listen to it originally when the first song was out, I forgot about it and I listened to it because I think George either bought it or it was in his wish list on Bandcamp. It's the album Freedom of Fear, Nocturnal Gates, the debut from this Australian melodic death progressive metal band. Like I said, I heard the one song,

02:32:49.020 --> 02:33:18.680
was out before the album was released, but I listened to it again. It was pretty good. So I probably would have given that some more time had it, I had it early on. So. Sweet. Will. I will kind of echo what John said is that I just, I didn't really have a lot of time to put together this list, but I did go back on what I started with and I ended with is I just looked at all your lists and I just went through stuff that I haven't heard of or was quasi familiar with.

02:33:19.719 --> 02:33:48.820
and tried to compile my list of stuff that you guys had. So my number five is Wormwitch, Heaven That Dwells Within. And we got the promo for this, and I just didn't spend a lot of time with it, but I do remember Jay saying this is sort of like Goat. And so when I saw Wormwitch again, I'm like, let me check this out, and I dig it. So yeah, I missed this one. I should have spent way more time with this. I call it a mix between Goat, Whore, and Witchery, and slightly more,

02:33:53.279 --> 02:34:18.880
I compiled my list exactly the same way. I did two things. One was I looked at all of your lists and was like, okay, that showed up a few times. And then went and listened to these things. And one was just things that you guys would kind of make special comments on. So we'll get to that as some of those ones. Well, actually, we'll start with one of those ones. And that is that you guys always kind of raised your eyebrows and were like, yeah, of course.

02:34:19.020 --> 02:34:47.320
And I didn't really listen to Yellow Eyes. That's a good record. So I'm an idiot. I shouldn't really know more about that. I did not know more about that. I've been listening to it since Yellow Eyes, Rarefield, Ceiling. Me and Matt have been pimping that for a while. You have. And that's why it stuck out in my brain. I might have listened to a sample at one point and just didn't go anywhere with me. And then I was, well, I listened to it again. And it should have done it on my list. Cool.

02:34:49.020 --> 02:35:18.820
My number five is a band called Skull Crush, and their album is Archaic Towers of Annihilation. It's their first album of our Phoenix death metal band. Yep. All right, Markisan. Number four. I haven't heard that one. My number four is Megaton Sword, Nirolet. This is an EP from Dying Victims Productions. I completely missed it in 2019. The band describes themselves as 80s,

02:35:18.960 --> 02:35:48.780
inspired true as steel heavy metal infused with over the top fantasy lyrics. I meant to listen to that. The first song is called Vulva of the Nightfall. So the band description is pretty on point. I really love the riffs on this record and this is the raw retro meets modern feel to this band. There's a bit of Sabbath in it. There's a bit of Manila Road in it, but they don't really sound like either of those bands. Nobody says Manila Road on this podcast.

02:35:48.880 --> 02:35:49.580
Not ironically

02:35:51.279 --> 02:35:52.240
I like them

02:35:52.360 --> 02:35:52.620
You know

02:35:52.620 --> 02:35:52.940
I have

02:35:53.140 --> 02:35:54.480
They have a long

02:35:54.600 --> 02:35:55.680
And strange career

02:35:55.780 --> 02:35:56.320
But the truth is

02:35:56.460 --> 02:35:57.180
They have a couple records

02:35:57.260 --> 02:35:58.060
I like a lot

02:35:58.700 --> 02:35:59.080
Yeah

02:35:59.260 --> 02:35:59.720
No me too

02:36:00.939 --> 02:36:01.340
Yeah

02:36:01.500 --> 02:36:01.800
Nearlet

02:36:02.020 --> 02:36:02.940
This would not have

02:36:02.960 --> 02:36:03.540
Made my list

02:36:03.660 --> 02:36:04.400
Because I don't include

02:36:04.540 --> 02:36:05.420
EPs on my list

02:36:05.600 --> 02:36:07.280
But they're on my radar now

02:36:07.420 --> 02:36:08.580
And I heard that they're

02:36:08.920 --> 02:36:09.340
Going to release

02:36:09.460 --> 02:36:10.600
A full length this year

02:36:10.760 --> 02:36:11.740
So I'm looking forward to that

02:36:11.960 --> 02:36:13.140
But yeah

02:36:13.240 --> 02:36:13.880
I've played this

02:36:14.060 --> 02:36:15.260
A ton since I found it

02:36:15.320 --> 02:36:16.480
I was surprised

02:36:18.439 --> 02:36:18.840
Cool

02:36:18.860 --> 02:36:48.820
All right, Matt. Number four, I would preface it with a statement. I'm sorry, comma, fuck me. And that one trips cadaver circulation. Oh, yes. That's reasonable. I've made both comments. That's reasonable. It's quasi unreasonable why you did not hear this before now. Oh, that's the fuck me. Well, heard it, but again, liked it, but just I did not connect with it until the urine was

02:36:48.860 --> 02:37:17.140
done? Fuck me. Yeah. Happens, man. So you did not connect with it until it fucked you. I get it, man. Exactly. I haven't slept since. I don't have a slur play with Chris. Nor have I sat down. In the tradition. I love donuts. There it is.

02:37:18.840 --> 02:37:48.420
All right, so here's where I start struggling with the words because I'm really tired, but I got this one from Matt, and Matt, you can correct me. I wanted to listen to it early on, but I didn't, and then I remember you had it on your list, and I saw it again, so I checked it out, and that's Herod. Is it Sombre Dessin? I guess. Yeah. That was pretty cool. Yeah. Didn't really know about them. I guess they're like a Swiss sludgy proggy band. That's cool.

02:37:48.860 --> 02:38:18.060
They're pelagic, right? I believe so, yeah. Yeah, that's how I saw it. It was pretty cool. I liked it. All right, Will. I don't know if I said it five minutes ago, but mine are not in that much particular order, but my number four is The Mothgatherer Esoteric Oppression. Nice, nice. That came out so early, too, Will. That was an easy one to hear and then forget about. I mean, wasn't that like January, February or something? Maybe March.

02:38:18.880 --> 02:38:18.960
says,

02:38:18.990 --> 02:38:19.100
says,

02:38:19.180 --> 02:38:20.200
Mothgatherer forgettable.

02:38:23.819 --> 02:38:27.520
I feel like you're taking those comments out of context,

02:38:27.740 --> 02:38:27.880
sir.

02:38:28.280 --> 02:38:29.480
That is how the media works.

02:38:32.380 --> 02:38:32.760
My,

02:38:32.990 --> 02:38:33.100
uh,

02:38:33.400 --> 02:38:35.940
number four is my December album of the month.

02:38:35.950 --> 02:38:37.500
So I didn't have a chance to miss this,

02:38:37.680 --> 02:38:38.720
but it is a good record.

02:38:38.900 --> 02:38:39.820
And if it had come out earlier,

02:38:40.180 --> 02:38:43.600
it would have had a chance to make my list probably somewhere below 25,

02:38:43.900 --> 02:38:44.280
but still,

02:38:44.770 --> 02:38:44.880
uh,

02:38:45.040 --> 02:38:46.260
sentient horror morbid realms.

02:38:46.560 --> 02:38:47.060
It's a good record.

02:38:47.200 --> 02:39:17.160
It was George's December album of the month, too. Good old-fashioned, slightly entombed-y, slightly venom-y, slightly more modern than that, but good stuff. And also featuring Sean Myers of Gates to the Morning on Session Drums. See, I did not know. I honestly didn't know that, but also I feel like it's called Morbid Realms on purpose because that's basically a mix between Morbid Tales and I had another one to go with that for Realms, but I can't remember.

02:39:17.220 --> 02:39:46.320
But in any case. But, you know, I wish I'd come out earlier. Oh, the other Morbid Angel album, Realms of the Underpants. Yeah, yeah. It was a special release. Yeah. George. All right, my number four. I am betting that this is a band that Markasson has mentioned because they're from Chicago. And I recognize the name and I looked on the list. It wasn't on his list, but I am positive that you have mentioned this band.

02:39:48.199 --> 02:40:16.740
Yes. A passage for lost years. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It was on my mid-year list, I believe. Okay. I didn't go back that far. But yeah, it's pretty cool. Awesome. Yeah. It's a good mix of ambient and black metal. Yeah, it's like a doomy black. Yeah. All right. My number three is, I have no idea how I missed this one because it was released by Profound Lore, which I like that label, and it merges.

02:40:16.820 --> 02:40:46.760
two of my favorite music genres into one, death metal and dark ambient music, and that is Abyssal, A Beacon in the Husk. This album is very progressive. It's otherworldly with an unnerving atmosphere that makes you feel like you're being paralyzed and pulled into endless shadow. It's a really, really good album, and you could listen to it late at night, or you could throw it out during the day and get fired up. So I don't know how I missed this one. I don't know where it would land.

02:40:46.840 --> 02:41:16.540
on my list if I had, let's do it earlier, but really good. Awesome. My number three, I will preface with I'm Sorry and I Suck. The band is Haunter, Suck, Death, Qualia. I think it was only on my list. I bought it though, it was good. George, you talked about it. Yeah, I like it.

02:41:16.840 --> 02:41:17.120
Yeah.

02:41:21.279 --> 02:41:22.080
All right.

02:41:22.480 --> 02:41:24.380
My number three, I actually did get from George.

02:41:25.060 --> 02:41:25.780
And I can honestly say that.

02:41:25.780 --> 02:41:26.880
They are all from me.

02:41:26.920 --> 02:41:27.440
We know this.

02:41:30.400 --> 02:41:32.120
Somewhere down the line, they eventually will be.

02:41:33.320 --> 02:41:39.280
I didn't want to listen to this band ever because I thought the second album from them was one of the worst album covers I've ever seen in my life.

02:41:39.380 --> 02:41:43.040
It was like two or three old naked dudes hugging each other.

02:41:44.400 --> 02:41:44.980
It's just weird.

02:41:45.560 --> 02:41:45.640
Anyway.

02:41:46.180 --> 02:42:16.140
You mean like us at Decibel? Somebody must have snuck into one of our hotel rooms. But the album is In Human Form. It's their third album. I was jonesing for an album and I saw Josh had it and so I bought it and I liked it. It's cool. They're kind of a proggy black metal, I guess. I don't know what you want to call them. But they're from the US. It's cool. I liked it. Three songs in like, what, 40 minutes?

02:42:16.200 --> 02:42:45.860
And so it's kind of, it's a lot. Yeah. That should have been on my list. It's funny it's not on there because it is on my what I'm listening to. Yeah. All right. Will. My number three is Waste of Space Orchestra, Cynthia. Nice. When I listen to this, now we had the promo for this a long time ago. Yeah. And I have to admit, I kind of dismissed this band name, this band based on their name. Like they were Waste of Space?

02:42:46.200 --> 02:43:13.160
Kind of like you're just a waste of my time orchestra. But after listening to it, going back, I kind of like this is a lot of instrumental. It's not a lot of vocals. And if the vocals are there, they're kind of like black metalish vocals. But I did enjoy this. I should have listened to this a little bit more. I should have had more with this album. You should have wasted more space.

02:43:16.180 --> 02:43:45.540
My number three is on a couple of your lists, at least two. And I think this will come along with some kind of like, and or possibly like, yeah, no shit, dude. Anyway, Ms. Mark Cairn. I didn't even hear this record at all. What? I mean, no, I mean, it wasn't that I didn't connect. I mean, I didn't even fucking hear it. I did not listen to it. And you guys mentioned it more than once on the cast. There you go.

02:43:46.200 --> 02:44:16.080
One of those ones that I missed 100,000%. I would say this. They did it for me when I saw them live. They played Atlas, and I saw them live, and it was like, wow. There you go. You must have talked about it a lot, and I didn't. I bet you talked about it at the time. Maybe a little bit, but yeah. For me, there's a lot of if I see you live in my own brewery, and I can experience that whole thing and talk to you, yeah, you go way up on my list. Well, it's also probably my biggest may.

02:44:16.200 --> 02:44:45.820
of all the ones on the list here, that was the one that most deserved to be on my list of what we're talking about here. So. So, Will, could we make your list if you see us in person? I was just thinking that, Matt. Your kiss, your kiss is on my list. I'm glad, I'm really glad you did, you discover that, Jay, because it's such a terrific album. So, but on the other hand, I got to discover it. So that happens, you know, it's like one of those things.

02:44:46.200 --> 02:45:10.220
Did you ever say to yourself, I wish I could hear this record for the first time again? No. Yes. Whatever it is, whatever record it might be. So that's, at least I got to do that. Load and reload. I wish I could hear this record for the last. I don't even want to hear it a last time. Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that.

02:45:18.600 --> 02:45:19.440
All right.

02:45:20.380 --> 02:45:23.720
My number three is Ophicium Triest, The Death of Gaia.

02:45:25.020 --> 02:45:27.520
Netherlands Death Doom Band. Sixth album.

02:45:29.620 --> 02:45:30.440
What was that, George?

02:45:31.100 --> 02:45:31.880
What? The band?

02:45:32.960 --> 02:45:33.880
Ophicium Triest.

02:45:34.520 --> 02:45:35.920
I have no idea if that's how it's pronounced.

02:45:37.240 --> 02:45:37.720
Okay.

02:45:38.600 --> 02:45:39.420
I'll have to check that out.

02:45:40.580 --> 02:45:44.280
It was my almost album of the month for December.

02:45:45.340 --> 02:46:15.260
All right, so you really dig it then. Yeah. My number two is Verthabral, Abysmal Decay. We've talked a little bit about this in Instant Messenger. This is an excellent old-school death from Paraguay on Transcending Obscurity Records. Really great twin lead attack on here with gorgeous solos. It came out on December 27th, so it was really last minute. If we had gotten the promo, I think this one may have been a contender.

02:46:15.340 --> 02:46:45.280
for me for my 2019 years. I really love the band's logo, which is completely made out of bones. And the album cover painting by Marcos Miller is just phenomenal. Picture. If you will. If you will. Battleheads. The last angels left in our universe, broken and impaled by spears, exhausted and forlorn as they are forced into an ancient prison pit made of skulls and sun-hot lava scales.

02:46:46.479 --> 02:47:13.860
somewhere on the far side of the galaxy. A hidden hellscape where their loving God, even in all his infinite wisdom and affection, will never find them. Amen. Wow. All right. Okay, well, hold on. Let me deal with that for a minute. Process all that. I did it because George mentions like, oh, what the description we could have had for this one. And I was like, I'll do one. Yeah.

02:47:14.540 --> 02:47:43.480
It's a great album cover. It would have been in my top five for sure if I would have found this album. I should have mentioned the Miz Moore cover, of course, that was the Polish dude we all like. I think he's Polish, right? I think so. I follow him now and he just posted. I love that. I went to his website just to see if there's anything I could buy. Starting to really be into that dude. Matt. So after Markisan it, I'll just say stay classy. I'm Ron Murkney. Yep.

02:47:44.520 --> 02:48:12.680
No, my number two, I found this band. I love this band. And then unfortunately, I completely forgot about this band. Mercoson, I believe they're on your list is Vukari. Yes. Avum, A-E-V-U-M. That's right, Avum. And actually, I thought they were from Europe, but they're actually from Chicago. Oh, there you go. It's a great band. Another one that just has a lot of different sounds. Yeah.

02:48:14.540 --> 02:48:44.180
is kind of rooted in black metal at times, but then just expanded beyond. Cool, man. I'm glad you found that. I.E. good shit. John. All right. My number two, I'm going to totally butcher this name, but it's kind of weird. They're a French band. I don't know why I'm finding all these French bands this year. I have no idea. I think you should start wearing up a rage. Really? God.

02:48:44.540 --> 02:49:11.920
Yes. More croissants. So I'll give it a shot here. Epictasi Asterisk. I'm not sure how you say it. I don't know. They're a progressive black metal band. That's cool. I mean, if you're that interested, which I doubt anyone is, you can see it on my band camp. So. Cool. All right. I'll take it out. My number two, Obsidian Tie, Pillars of Creation.

02:49:14.540 --> 02:49:15.040
John's night.

02:49:15.980 --> 02:49:16.340
I don't.

02:49:16.600 --> 02:49:19.220
Well, I looked at John's list a little bit.

02:49:19.260 --> 02:49:20.620
I looked at everyone's list a little bit.

02:49:21.120 --> 02:49:22.860
I listened to a lot of things a little bit.

02:49:23.380 --> 02:49:24.460
And this one stuck with me.

02:49:24.860 --> 02:49:25.940
A band out of Israel.

02:49:27.119 --> 02:49:27.920
Very progressive.

02:49:28.320 --> 02:49:28.900
Very death metal.

02:49:29.140 --> 02:49:30.540
Very clean vocals.

02:49:31.080 --> 02:49:31.180
Yeah.

02:49:31.460 --> 02:49:32.640
Well, Opethion.

02:49:33.460 --> 02:49:33.920
Yes, it is.

02:49:34.320 --> 02:49:34.680
Is that it?

02:49:34.980 --> 02:49:35.160
Yeah.

02:49:35.420 --> 02:49:42.439
So as I dig into John's library of stuff and you'll hear my number one, which is a little

02:49:42.440 --> 02:49:44.180
more into John's library.

02:49:44.720 --> 02:49:47.260
Or actually, not just John's, but everyone else's.

02:49:48.920 --> 02:49:49.060
Yeah.

02:49:50.380 --> 02:50:00.840
But Obsidian Tide to me wasn't like, it wasn't sort of, the clean vocals were there.

02:50:01.600 --> 02:50:03.100
It was the majority of stuff.

02:50:03.500 --> 02:50:06.140
But I felt like the death metal complimented it.

02:50:06.200 --> 02:50:11.680
Rather, there was death metal vocals and they had shitty, clean vocals to distract.

02:50:12.080 --> 02:50:41.980
It was kind of like the opposite. If that makes any sense to anybody whatsoever. No, it does. Not at all, of course. Death metal vocals in it that complement it rather than a death metal band that had shitty clean vocals. Hey, Will. Do you know that you've been muted this whole time? Hey, Will. When you looked at my list, Will, was it too long? No, we get it. You've said this before, Will, because you like a band like Chemist where they do clean vocals.

02:50:42.060 --> 02:51:11.520
and then sometimes they put in those death vocals in there. But the other way around sometimes is weird for you. Yeah, yeah, it is. It's like you're primarily a death metal band and then you put in clean vocals. Sometimes I'm like, whoa, look, we were just having a moment. We were just having a moment. And then you decide to like stop everything and call your friend and say, hey, can you do it in the mall? Yeah. Do you want to go to the mall? We were doing something here and decided to stop and like,

02:51:12.080 --> 02:51:13.440
It fucked me up.

02:51:16.400 --> 02:51:16.800
Blue balls.

02:51:17.760 --> 02:51:17.860
Yeah.

02:51:18.620 --> 02:51:18.920
I'm sorry.

02:51:18.970 --> 02:51:19.780
What were you guys thinking?

02:51:20.520 --> 02:51:22.860
Played vocals sometimes called the CV.

02:51:24.400 --> 02:51:28.260
So my number two is one that just frankly should have been on my list.

02:51:28.920 --> 02:51:32.680
I'm pretty sure it was Will's list that made me go back and listen to it again.

02:51:32.860 --> 02:51:34.880
It's Cerebral Rot, Odius, Descentive, Decay.

02:51:36.159 --> 02:51:37.520
It's really right up my alley.

02:51:38.720 --> 02:52:07.960
I was just one that should have been, it was pushed off to the side or something when the list was being put together. And I did listen to this record, but I didn't listen to it enough. It's better than I remembered it when I put it back on. That's it. Cool. Awesome. My number two is one that I saw, you know, you go to Bandcamp and you go to your feed and you look at what other people are buying. And this thing, it was on there all the time. And I gave it probably a brief listen and I was like, meh, whatever.

02:52:08.740 --> 02:52:38.700
And I don't know why I went back and I was like, you know, I have been seeing this a lot. Let me give this a deeper listen. And I was like, wow, this is actually really good. And there's a band called Firelink. The album is called The Inveterate Fire. It's the first album. They're on an Atlanta melodic black band. And it is surprisingly good. The only reason this is sitting at number two is because there's a lot of it's like, I would even almost call it

02:52:38.720 --> 02:53:08.060
more death than black, but a lot of really good, heavy music. And then they go into these clean guitar interludes, which are nice, but a little too long in places. And that's the only thing that kept this out of number one, but it's a great album. I heard that one recently too, George, and I was a little bit surprised because I had not heard it during all of 2019. So yeah, I think it came out in like April or something. Yeah, right. Okay.

02:53:08.720 --> 02:53:37.540
Number one. This is one I had not heard at all. It's a doom band from Chile. And I'll probably butcher this name, but it's Capilla Ardiente. The Siege is the name of the album. And their name means Burning Chapel. And this is the band's second album. And it has a very dark, epic sound that's very much in the candle mass wheelhouse. Lots of great hooks, soaring vocals, excellent guitar work.

02:53:37.620 --> 02:53:40.340
over four very long songs.

02:53:41.680 --> 02:53:47.360
So this album would have been a strong contender to crack my top 40 if I had heard it last year.

02:53:47.970 --> 02:53:49.120
And that's why it's my number one.

02:53:50.100 --> 02:53:50.540
Right on.

02:53:52.600 --> 02:53:52.860
Matt?

02:53:54.180 --> 02:53:57.580
My number one, I too, was a total surprise for me.

02:53:58.520 --> 02:54:01.820
I felt like I actually knew the name, but I did not listen to it.

02:54:03.060 --> 02:54:06.340
The band is Call of the Void, and the album is Buried in Light.

02:54:11.859 --> 02:54:35.740
It was talked about when it came out. I think we all talked about it a little. Didn't they break up right after this? Possibly. With a name like that, they might have. Hoping not. A couple of key members. At least you got to hear them. Right. How nice it was to see it before it was destroyed. Thanks.

02:54:36.360 --> 02:55:06.000
Thanks for stopping by. Great experience. I'm glad it happened. Yeah. All right, John. All right. My number one. I can't believe I missed this. Oh, that's right. It came out like literally the last day of the year or the Monday of the last day on the 30th. But anyway, it's a band. I didn't think would ever release an album again. The band is Agora and it's the entheogenic frequencies. It's a third album. It's all instrumental. It's progressive metal with fusion.

02:55:06.340 --> 02:55:13.080
in it. Some notable names from the first album back in, I think, 99 or 2000 were Sean Reinhart and Sean

02:55:13.200 --> 02:55:35.980
Malone as Sinek were on the first album. But they didn't last. They only were on the first. There's only three albums, like I said. But before it was this kind of jazz fusion death metal without the vocals, but with female vocals. Clean. She wasn't a harsh singer or anything. And now it's just an instrumental band from the main guy. I had no idea it was out. I literally just stumbled onto it.

02:55:36.040 --> 02:55:37.880
So I probably would have made my list actually

02:55:38.380 --> 02:55:39.560
had it come out earlier in the year

02:55:40.940 --> 02:55:41.240
Cool

02:55:43.080 --> 02:55:43.600
Will

02:55:45.120 --> 02:55:46.040
Can you hear me?

02:55:46.380 --> 02:55:46.500
Yes

02:55:47.421 --> 02:55:50.440
So my number one will make many many many of you happy

02:55:50.700 --> 02:55:52.720
I put this album on

02:55:53.180 --> 02:55:54.780
about three weeks ago when I was

02:55:54.920 --> 02:55:56.940
raking leaves for about four hours

02:55:57.030 --> 02:55:57.680
in my backyard

02:55:59.220 --> 02:55:59.780
Wilder Run

02:56:00.260 --> 02:56:00.580
Wow

02:56:02.040 --> 02:56:03.260
Vale of Imagination

02:56:04.961 --> 02:56:06.000
I just

02:56:06.479 --> 02:56:35.560
I just never listened to it. We didn't get the promo, never listened to it. I've heard you guys talk about it and just never, I don't want to say never gave it a chance because I didn't have anything against it, just never listened to it. I don't know how accurate this is, Will, but remember there were 3,817 metal albums released last year. You're pretty much off the hook here, buddy. Cool. Well, glad you liked it. Anyway, I was saying,

02:56:38.340 --> 02:56:41.880
I just put this on because it was soon after the mid-year.

02:56:42.780 --> 02:56:48.800
And I really liked it. I mean, there's a little too much, like, dare I say wankery.

02:56:49.400 --> 02:56:50.400
There's a lot of love.

02:56:51.400 --> 02:56:53.780
I don't think you're wrong. I agree with you well, and I like it.

02:56:54.160 --> 02:57:01.020
But there's a little bit too much of just, but I kind of, this reminds me, what was the name of that band?

02:57:01.320 --> 02:57:31.300
There's a band that John and I would go round and round with that would do... It's a British band that did Morbid Angel better than Morbid Angel, but it's all the non-Morbid Angel parts that would drive me absolutely nuts. There's only one song. It's Alkaloid. Yeah, the band Alkaloid. Yes. These guys remind me of Alkaloid, whereas they would just kind of... There was a lot of wankery going on all the time, but when they focused...

02:57:31.340 --> 02:58:01.240
That's a better discussion of Alkaloid than it is of Wilderun, but I still hear you. I mean, there's a lot about the Wilderun record that doesn't work for me, Will, for what it's worth, and I put it on my desk. But the thing is, there's a lot of it that does, and there's parts that do, kind of like Alkaloid, there's parts that do which are like, this is amazing. I think, and I hope I'm not misquoting him, because I said this last time, and I don't think he remembered it, but Marcus Son had said, this is like one of those records you make right before you make your very fucking best record.

02:58:01.340 --> 02:58:29.640
or something to that effect. I think the next one's going to be amazing, but that still says a lot about this one. Yeah. Anyway, what I listened to, I very much enjoyed, but there are those criticisms that I have which would not have necessarily made my list on the first round. Fair enough. Mine is just an embarrassing omission for me. There are certain bands that we all like. Chemist didn't put out an album.

02:58:32.760 --> 02:59:01.160
But there's certain bands that we all like, but they're not at the top of our list. They're just a band that we all quite like a bit. Long story short, this record came out this year, and you guys were like, oh yeah, it was pretty good, and I hadn't listened to it yet, and I was like, okay, well maybe I'll get to it later, and I never got to it. And then John B.T. had it as his fucking number one, and I was like, uh-oh. So I listened to it, and John might have been the only one that had it on his list, but I fucked up and not listened to this record. And I like these guys, Borknagar, True North. I totally should have been on my fucking list, dude. That's a really good record.

02:59:01.320 --> 02:59:31.080
And well, I stand corrected on that one. I don't think I heard a note of this last year. Wow. So yeah, it was just my short term. And I like them. Again, it's something I would have pursued. And I swear to you, when it came out, I think you guys were like, yeah, I listened to it. It was pretty good. And that was it. So unless one of you guys sometimes sells the shit out of something, I may not get to it, you know? Yeah. Yeah. I think I'm the only one who had it on my list. You were. It was on my honorable mentions list. But yeah, I really liked that album. I should have listened to it.

02:59:31.320 --> 03:00:01.280
I had it definitely went on my list. So, anyway. George. My number one, you already mentioned, Jay, and that would be Sentient Horror, Morbid Realms. Nice. Cool. It is good. It's a lot of fun. Yeah, it's a nice way to end the year. Yeah. Yeah. All righty. We've got the homestretch ahead of us. What are we listening to? Mark is on. Yeah. So, other than the albums I mentioned,

03:00:02.061 --> 03:00:31.300
I've been digging just a few more albums because there's not a lot out for 2020 yet but two new tracks from Wake's upcoming album Devouring Rain Matt and I just posted about how Wake kind of won us over after seeing them live at Decimal last year so I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole album in March right now there's a couple tracks Tiding Me Over in the Lair of the Rat Kings on MetalSucks.net and Abyssal Plane which is on the band's band camp

03:00:31.320 --> 03:01:00.761
both tracks are just fucking brutal gravy thick brutality man they they make me want to tear shit apart i can't wait to hear the rest of it um unrequited mosaic 2 and the rest of it's french so maybe john could read that but i don't want to um this is a dynamic ambient black metal melancholy from space i've really enjoyed the releases from this band

03:01:00.780 --> 03:01:02.400
especially Mosaic 1.

03:01:02.400 --> 03:01:05.240
So it was nice to listen to the sequel to the album.

03:01:07.561 --> 03:01:12.440
Also, Transcending Obscurity Records, the label sampler from 2020.

03:01:13.920 --> 03:01:20.220
Every year, the label puts out an annual preview of new music from bands that they're working with

03:01:20.380 --> 03:01:24.100
or have upcoming albums or albums that are further down the road.

03:01:24.300 --> 03:01:30.020
So our friend on the podcast, Trevor Ports, he recently signed.

03:01:30.140 --> 03:01:59.720
Both of his bands, Abhoria and Ashen Horde to Transcending Obscurity. So there's tracks on from both of those bands on the sampler along with like, I think there's like 25 tracks, 30 tracks, something like that. And Transcending Obscurity is also offering all their albums that pay for what you want, pay what you want price on Bandcamp in January. So, you know, I'd definitely take a look and see what you might be interested in, explore the catalog, download what you want.

03:02:00.120 --> 03:02:29.620
And then the last thing, metal covers of the song, Toss a Coin to Your Witcher. This fracking song is in my head since the wife and I binged The Witcher over two nights last week. I keep hearing about this song. I'm going to have to watch this show. There have been a ton of metal covers of this song already, but my favorite is from this guy named Dan Vask. It's up on YouTube.

03:02:30.140 --> 03:03:00.080
He also did the Song of the White Wolf, which is the theme song for Geralt of Rivia, who is the lead character in The Witcher. He is The Witcher. So I can't believe I'm smitten with a TV show song. It's absolutely ridiculous. And I feel like I've lost at least 20 points of metal cred for admitting that. No, it's attached to The Witcher, so that's okay. Is anybody else watching that? No, not yet. I binge-watched it. I haven't seen it yet. Yeah, I binge-watched.

03:03:00.140 --> 03:03:02.520
And it is

03:03:04.101 --> 03:03:06.800
My best advice to you is

03:03:07.260 --> 03:03:10.320
Find a spoiler-free guide online

03:03:11.220 --> 03:03:13.760
That can explain what the fuck is going on with it

03:03:14.140 --> 03:03:15.580
You know, honestly, I played the game

03:03:15.820 --> 03:03:17.640
So I should be more or less

03:03:18.100 --> 03:03:21.280
So, yeah, it's three timelines in one is what they're doing

03:03:21.560 --> 03:03:23.180
Yeah, they're doing several timelines

03:03:23.400 --> 03:03:24.580
So you watch one episode

03:03:25.500 --> 03:03:27.100
And then the next episode

03:03:27.840 --> 03:03:30.100
Completely confuses you because you're not sure

03:03:30.700 --> 03:04:00.080
It's not like they have a tagline at the bottom that says, this takes place three years before X event. And so I was extremely confused. I think it's good. I didn't absolutely love it, but I enjoyed it. I've been watching it by myself over like a week. Okay, fair enough. It's worth it. Watch it and it sucks a lot of violence. I think Game of Thrones, but...

03:04:00.120 --> 03:04:01.380
Definitely more graphic violence.

03:04:02.060 --> 03:04:02.220
Yeah.

03:04:02.880 --> 03:04:04.680
Well, again, I played the game, and the game's a lot of fun.

03:04:04.780 --> 03:04:06.040
And it actually has a deep story, so.

03:04:07.060 --> 03:04:07.220
Yeah.

03:04:07.680 --> 03:04:09.480
And also, there's a song you can't get out of your head.

03:04:09.480 --> 03:04:12.600
You throw your keys in the bowl and your wife and you go, like, visit your friend's house?

03:04:12.720 --> 03:04:13.820
Or, like, what do you mean play the game?

03:04:14.400 --> 03:04:14.760
It's a game.

03:04:14.900 --> 03:04:15.320
It's from a video game.

03:04:15.320 --> 03:04:16.060
It's a video game, yeah.

03:04:17.760 --> 03:04:18.160
Oh, sorry.

03:04:18.780 --> 03:04:19.400
No fucking idea.

03:04:20.400 --> 03:04:21.360
But, John, you were saying.

03:04:21.360 --> 03:04:23.880
I thought they were also, I thought it was based on books.

03:04:24.580 --> 03:04:25.380
Well, it is.

03:04:25.540 --> 03:04:25.720
The books.

03:04:25.840 --> 03:04:26.880
The game is based on books.

03:04:27.340 --> 03:04:27.420
Yeah.

03:04:27.440 --> 03:04:29.100
But the game is startlingly deep.

03:04:29.260 --> 03:04:30.180
I haven't read the books but

03:04:32.799 --> 03:04:59.220
Witcher 3 is a huge video game at one like video game of the year so I think that's kind of what prompted the show even though the books are also popular yeah but they actually base each story you know of the eight off the books yeah I mean that's what they're supposed to be but don't expect a ton of like him slaying monsters or anything that no yeah that's fine which really isn't what the game's about either really no but it's way more story driven okay

03:04:59.240 --> 03:05:26.920
Also, I like Henry Cavill. I thought he was a great Superman, so I'm all for this show. It really focuses on three different characters. He is the Witcher, but there's two other characters that get equal, if not more, screen time than him in the series. As it goes on, yeah. He has a lot of boobs. You know what? That's the perfect summary right there. Thank you. Matt, what are you listening to? Were you done, Marcus? I am. That was last.

03:05:29.240 --> 03:05:58.180
On my watch list, I have a little bit to the top. I feel like every year after the end of year episode, I kind of go into a bit of a hibernation and just listen to anything but new music. So I created four playlists. Thank you. First of which is an Aussie Sabbath playlist that goes through Bloody Sabbath and also includes 13.

03:05:59.040 --> 03:06:28.320
I have a Dio Sabbath playlist, which includes Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, and then the... Heaven and Hell record? Yeah, is it Devil You Know? Devil You Know, yeah. And then I do a playlist, which is all death, which also includes Curse All Denied. And then I do a Slayer playlist, which goes through Season of the Abyss. And that has basically been my diet for the last month. That's a fine diet, sir. It's good. Eating well. Yeah.

03:06:29.040 --> 03:06:58.940
Feeling good. Looking a little chunky, Matt. I'm feeling very fat. No, no, we got to fix that for the calendar. You're damn right. I'm not bitchy, but I am. All right, John. I do the same thing. I take a break from all the metal from the year and I just listen to everything else I missed during the year. But to keep it short, all those albums I mentioned for our top five I listened to, The Lotus Day,

03:06:59.020 --> 03:07:28.180
that just came out and then just rush unfortunately of course yeah so um but yeah a lot of bands that are not metal i listened to a lot of that stuff after the the podcast um but i'm not gonna list them all because there's too many of them so so we'll just say lotus thief rush in my top five all right will uh i was uh binging on the new perihelion ship

03:07:28.920 --> 03:07:57.260
Yeah, the two-song EP, Synchro. A lot less death metal. I don't know if that's an EP or if those are just advanced tracks from a full record, is it? Yeah, whatever. Sorry. No, no, you're right. You're right, Jay. They just released two songs, so it's kind of hard to say that's an EP, so you're right. But anyway, I love those guys. A lot less death metal, if any, death metal on this one, but still a lot of fun.

03:07:58.180 --> 03:08:28.140
I've been binging on old Crip Sermon after Ruins of Fading Light made my number one. I was listening to Crip Sermon out of the garden a lot on vinyl. And then I don't know what it is about this band Space Slug, whether it's the Star Wars tie-in or what, but there is just something about this band that I just find hypnotizing. And so, and they seem to put out like three EPs slash albums a year. And this one's called Reign of Orion, which I find.

03:08:28.200 --> 03:08:54.220
really great. And then old school, my daughter and I were watching this on Disney+. They have National Geographic, and they had a thing about where National Geographic went in. And they did the excavation, not excavation, but they did the restoration of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

03:08:55.380 --> 03:09:25.000
And they were talking about how in the Bible they say that Jesus was buried, if you believe in all this crap, sorry, not crap, if you believe in all this crap. Crap. History. History. That he was buried in Golgotha section of Jerusalem. So I'm like, Golgotha, oh. I thought that was a word like that. All word to Golgotha. Oh, I love it. So if you never knew where the word Golgotha came from, the incantation song, that's where it comes from.

03:09:25.360 --> 03:09:54.440
I thought Golgotha was the where he was killed. Yeah, I thought it was like gallows and things like that. Yeah. Well, there's a second. Kevin Smith taught us that. Yes, that's true. That's probably where I got that. The shit demon. Yeah, I don't know. So I think Marcasson mentioned this. Verithabral, abysmal decay from Paraguay. Just got that, I think, today. Now yesterday.

03:09:55.380 --> 03:10:24.360
Yeah. Yeah. Or yesterday. Yeah. And then, um, was something that we mentioned today in the new releases, Unbound Terror, Faith and Chaos. That was really awesome. Uh, when, and I, and I do sort of what Matt has been doing. I've been listening to a lot of old stuff, like mostly when I'm at work. Um, so one of those dark angel darkness, darkness descends. Wow. Um, just super old school. I was like, Oh, darkness descend. It's like the record label. Hmm.

03:10:25.380 --> 03:10:54.440
And then I have been, and I will say this, with a huge shout out to Trevor, the Ashen Horde, Tim Grengan EP. I think it's a four or five song EP, and you can listen to four songs of absolute Ashen Horde clicks without clean vocals. And I actually, weirdly enough, I fucking super appreciate it, because one of the things that drives me nuts,

03:10:54.940 --> 03:11:24.520
is when you have such an exceptional black metal band and they just decide to like oh let me just stop this phenomenal black metal song and do this weird melodic breakdown and have this clean vocals come in and then just ruin the whole fucking song i feel like this is the first time we're learning this about you i feel like i know this more than anything else in my life um i not unlike um

03:11:24.540 --> 03:11:52.740
I have something in common with all of you. And one is with John, because I've been listening to Rush basically since the news broke. And without, I don't want to piss off our sponsors. So I have to tell you, I thought that I will just tell you the playlist I put on my swim pod. So that you'll, and you'll know this, this is how I clear, clear my head at the end of the year. And even though some of this is on my end of the year list, it's just, this was just put on my swim pod a couple of days ago. And this is what I've been listening to as a playlist. Underwater Audio.com.

03:11:54.540 --> 03:12:24.500
Possessed, Revelations of Oblivion, Overkill, Ironbound, Opeth and Cauda Vaninam, Iron Maiden, Power Slave, Dio Holy Diver, Death, The Sound of Perseverance, Celtic Frost, Monotheist, Death Atlas is on there, twice for some reason, Cannibal Corpse, Red Before Black, and then Selected Tracks by ACDC, Black Sabbath, and Alice Cooper. And that's about the size of it. Really, Russia's getting listed to most over here, right?

03:12:25.439 --> 03:12:54.220
You know, I didn't know UnderwaterAudio.com was a real thing. It is. Yeah, I mean, they, they, I'll just shut the fuck up. Jay's really getting money on the side. All right. So,

03:12:54.540 --> 03:13:21.080
John mentioned my first one already, Freedom of Fear, Nocturnal Gates, Australian Melodic Death. I bought a lot of stuff in the last few weeks. I'm only going to mention one of the larger ones, which is Goat Horror, because a couple days ago I bought pretty much Haunting Curse on in anticipation of the fact that I think they're going to have a new album this year. Yeah, they were in the studio three months ago, so something's coming. Yeah.

03:13:24.560 --> 03:13:54.520
called Hex and their second album God Has No Name they're a Spanish death doom band that is not from Greece. Also mentioned by John In Human Form their third album this features Dave Kaminsky who is a sometimes member of Inferro Brea. So yeah band called Into Coffin Unconquered Abysses it's their second album it's a German death black doom band this album is

03:13:54.520 --> 03:13:57.560
like insanely long all the songs are like 15 20 minutes long

03:13:59.900 --> 03:14:05.160
machinations of fate their self-titled first albums kentucky death thrash band

03:14:07.121 --> 03:14:13.240
meinenfeld or minefield but it's german their first album the great adventure i believe

03:14:13.780 --> 03:14:21.300
this is one of those like world war one bands and they're german so yeah that's good they're old

03:14:23.079 --> 03:14:23.640
I mean,

03:14:23.800 --> 03:14:25.380
there's a bunch of bands that all that,

03:14:25.480 --> 03:14:25.780
you know,

03:14:26.810 --> 03:14:26.920
uh,

03:14:26.920 --> 03:14:26.940
uh,

03:14:27.180 --> 03:14:28.540
like Halo bullets and,

03:14:28.750 --> 03:14:31.460
and what's the Sabaton or whatever.

03:14:31.640 --> 03:14:32.000
Maybe they're not.

03:14:34.360 --> 03:14:34.660
Uh,

03:14:35.400 --> 03:14:36.240
oath of cruelty,

03:14:36.580 --> 03:14:38.000
summary execution at dawn,

03:14:38.320 --> 03:14:38.600
Houston,

03:14:38.820 --> 03:14:39.640
death metal band,

03:14:39.800 --> 03:14:40.300
first album,

03:14:41.410 --> 03:14:41.540
uh,

03:14:42.720 --> 03:14:42.980
album,

03:14:43.520 --> 03:14:43.660
sorry,

03:14:43.740 --> 03:14:44.040
not album,

03:14:44.180 --> 03:14:48.020
but band name of the year goes to ravaged spleen outburst.

03:14:50.800 --> 03:15:20.400
And the first album, The Church of Anemia, it's a Serbian death metal band. Pretty interesting lesson, you should check that out. Second to last is a band, it's a Ukrainian band that I don't know how to pronounce this, SVRM. And the album title's all in like Russian characters, so no clue what that says. Not helpful. But it's their second album, Atmosphere Black Metal. And then of course, A Bunch of Rush.

03:15:24.300 --> 03:15:50.480
And there we are. Three and a half hours. Maybe because that was your last sentence, George, about what you said. I just, once again, just take in for a moment that this is our first post-Neil Peart episode and just what a strange and horrible thing that was to learn this week. Yes. And it's nice to have friends like you to talk to about it, in all honesty, to kind of remember him a little bit and share our rush memories and stuff. That's good. That feels good. Yeah.

03:15:50.820 --> 03:15:51.320
Yeah, definitely.

03:15:53.480 --> 03:15:54.700
Well, here's to a good middle of your voice.

03:15:55.180 --> 03:15:55.420
Yes.

03:15:56.500 --> 03:15:57.920
See what 2020 can do for us.

03:15:59.600 --> 03:16:00.920
Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

03:16:00.920 --> 03:16:02.760
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in a few months.

03:16:03.160 --> 03:16:03.400
Yes.

03:16:04.200 --> 03:16:04.900
Right around the corner.

03:16:05.160 --> 03:16:05.540
Yes.

03:16:06.760 --> 03:16:07.240
All right, well.

03:16:08.460 --> 03:16:09.260
Let's get some sleep.

03:16:09.800 --> 03:16:10.020
It's late.

03:16:10.100 --> 03:16:10.760
Let's get some sleep.

03:16:10.940 --> 03:16:13.840
Now, for those of us that are not on the West Coast or further.

03:16:14.320 --> 03:16:16.120
It's like 730 here.

03:16:17.200 --> 03:16:18.480
It's almost one o'clock here.

03:16:18.780 --> 03:16:38.940
We have like some hellish storm that's coming in right now. So yes, you do. Yeah. And there's just like, I think it's really going to hit the shit out of you guys. It just, it just broke here. So is it raining? Yeah. I have to go check. I'm in the basement, so I can't. So. All right. All right, boys. Well, see y'all next time. All right. Later. Later.

03:17:05.499 --> 03:17:18.740
I can't do it

03:17:20.780 --> 03:17:40.080
It's a matter of inches. Perfect amount of length. Less dick would be good. Absolutely holds my attention. You sexy motherfucker. I gotta fit this in somewhere. Holy shit, I'm really fucking hammered. I can't pull it off. Epic Fail.
