00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:32.920
You must listen.

00:00:36.620 --> 00:00:40.060
Now, here is the podcast, Metal Heads Podcast.

00:00:40.480 --> 00:00:40.600
Go.

00:00:41.860 --> 00:00:43.360
Hello, and welcome to the Metal Heads Podcast.

00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:44.260
My name is George.

00:00:45.080 --> 00:00:45.580
This is Jerry.

00:00:46.060 --> 00:00:46.760
This is John.

00:00:47.120 --> 00:00:47.800
This is Matt.

00:00:48.260 --> 00:00:49.180
This is Markasson.

00:00:49.540 --> 00:00:55.640
And we are joined today by Ray Amite of Immortal Bird, and I should probably mention Thrasenblatt.

00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:56.200
Hello.

00:00:56.740 --> 00:00:57.320
How are you doing, Ray?

00:00:58.020 --> 00:00:58.340
Good.

00:00:58.900 --> 00:00:59.620
Thanks for coming on.

00:01:00.060 --> 00:01:27.040
Thanks for having me. So, you are getting ready to release the second Immortal Bird album, Thrive on Neglect, on July 5th. Congratulations on that. Thank you. What can people expect from the new album? How is it different or the same than the previous album? And actually, before you answer, full disclosure, we've all heard it. Oh, cool. By way of a promo, not an illegal download.

00:01:33.259 --> 00:01:59.540
How is it the same? How is it different? Well, it's the same in terms of half of the personnel, but half of the personnel changed. Different drummer, different guitarist now, so that also meant a different co-writer for me. But that went really well. Writing with Nate was an extremely good experience. In a lot of ways, it was a lot easier than writing with Evan. Not that writing with Evan was bad or particularly,

00:01:59.680 --> 00:02:03.820
and arduous thing, but it was just faster with Nate. There's just a facility

00:02:04.140 --> 00:02:06.820
of communication there that didn't used to be present.

00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:08.399
So I does...

00:02:08.399 --> 00:02:11.740
Is it better communication, or do you just live closer to each other?

00:02:12.860 --> 00:02:13.800
Better communication.

00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:18.240
Yeah, it's...

00:02:18.240 --> 00:02:22.340
The sound, I think, is a progression from, you know, what we sounded like before.

00:02:22.640 --> 00:02:27.980
I don't think that it sounds not like us, or it's a huge departure from what people would expect,

00:02:28.160 --> 00:02:58.120
But since we only have three releases out, well, two, I guess, three with this one, there's not like a whole lot to draw from. There's not like a huge reference. So I don't feel like confined by our back catalog because it's so small. So long story short, I feel like it's definitely similar, but hopefully better, maybe a little bit more complex without being convoluted. And I think we all just have a better idea of who we are as a band because we're not going to be a little bit more complex.

00:02:58.160 --> 00:03:26.520
We've all been together for a few years now. I have to say the opening groove on the very first song, right away you're like, okay, I'm gonna have a good time with this. It comes in like gangbusters. Yay, I'm glad you feel that way. It's always hard when you're trying to cheat the track order, but that one just seemed like a natural opener, and we all agreed pretty quickly on it. The rest we had to talk about at length, but we were all pretty clear on the idea. So how did you hook up with Matt and Nate?

00:03:28.140 --> 00:03:57.360
Just Chicago metal dudes who had good reputations for being solid humans and excellent players. And I didn't really know either of them very well before I asked them to play with us. We actually auditioned two other guitarist prospects before we found Nate. It didn't pan out with them, but initially we weren't really sure if it was going to work with Nate either. He was a really good player, but like just day one jitters were sort of like,

00:03:58.160 --> 00:04:27.800
We weren't sure what we wanted out of it. He was aware that we had tried out two other guitarists, so I think he felt a little like, "Okay." And I totally get that. So it wasn't like love at first sight, but I loved his playing right away, and I was determined to have him not feel so bad that he didn't want to play with us. So it did work out. He's awesome. This has been really cool being able to write with him and have a whole album that we made together. Matt, I just sent him a Facebook message, and I was like,

00:04:28.180 --> 00:04:58.080
you were doing a tour with Wolfhammer. That means you're at least touring. That seems cool. And you live in Chicago and you practice at the same space that Immortal Bird was practicing at at the time. So do you want to jam? And so the first time that he jammed with us was the first time I got an actual visual confirmation on who he was. I wasn't a million percent sure if I'd met him or not. But yeah. It was cool. It was really, really lucky that they ended up being the people that they are.

00:04:58.140 --> 00:05:28.120
So this the new album it's the first that you have with 20 bucks spin how did the band come to sign with the company and what's it been like to work with them Ray? It's been awesome so far basically I had a longer list of labels at the beginning of the whole process like back in 2015 that I might want to work with and as I learned more about each label and the people involved that list got really short and 20 bucks spin was at the top though because like Dave has a sterling reputation

00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:58.120
is just being an excellent dude and really good at what he does. And his roster speaks for itself. I've been looking at 20 Buck for years. This is a really good label. I like and trust pretty much everything coming out on here. There have been exceptions, Dave, but mostly I think everything is amazing. So yeah, I hit him up and he got back to us and was super encouraging but said that he didn't think there was really going to be time for him to handle it in 2018 because that

00:05:58.140 --> 00:06:22.920
was my initial goal. But I soon realized that 2019 was going to be the only doable timeline for us. So I decided that we should record demos because I really, really wanted to sign with 20 bucks. So we recorded demos. I sent them to him and I guess it worked because he got back to us and he was like, I can do it in 2019. This will be cool. Welcome to the team. He didn't say any of those things the way that I said them.

00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:52.200
But that's not for the team at all. But it's been awesome. I mean, I guess we'll see as that relationship progresses. But so far, it's been nothing but good stuff. Awesome. Did you record the album in Colorado, too? Did I read that? Yeah, we recorded it with Dave Otero at Flatline Audio in Westminster, Colorado. It's close to Denver. It was really cool. It was winter and it snowed and one of us went skiing.

00:06:53.020 --> 00:07:22.960
Why do I know that name, Dave Otero? He produced The Chemist. He comes up on almost every episode. Cephalic Carnage, Wake on Primitive Man, Vermin Wound. Are you familiar with the Facebook page, The Back of Dave Otero's Head? I am. I've tagged it. Yes. My friends in Allegiant tipped me off on that, and I think it's really funny. I knew about The Back of Dave Otero's Head before I was even really familiar with the work of the man.

00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:53.000
Is it true you just see a lot of the back of his head while he's working? Yeah I mean he doesn't face you while he's editing and like working on shit so yeah you see a lot of the back of his head and it was a pleasant time he has a dog and yes it was great. Awesome. Who does the songwriting in the band? It was a little it was actually a lot more collaborative than it was on the last two albums but it's basically Nate and I write

00:07:53.040 --> 00:08:22.440
all of the riffs and then there's open communication about like how to arrange and orchestrate said riffs you know Matt and I talk a lot about the drum parts we all are pretty drum minded though not just the drummers of the band so that's like pretty collaborative but ultimately Matt always comes up with super cool shit um so you don't tell him hey why don't you play it this way sometimes okay but he's super open to ideas sometimes I'll sit behind the kit and jam a little bit on stuff

00:08:24.300 --> 00:08:46.880
Yeah, like that weird kind of breakdown-y part in Anger Breed's Contempt with like, I can't really, I don't know the timestamp, but like I came up with the drums for that in a jam and it ended up sticking in there. Other stuff, it's like totally him. So yeah, I mean, essentially everyone's responsible for their own parts, but Nate and I write the riffs and the songs.

00:08:48.140 --> 00:08:51.360
Now, how did you end up coming out from behind the kit and fronting the band?

00:08:53.560 --> 00:09:21.380
I had a little bit of experience fronting bands like in college and stuff but never anything that was mine and I really enjoy drumming I mean drumming is the absolute love of my life but metal drumming is not so I don't know I would rather just work on my overall musicianship in the time that it would take me to become like this shredder very physical like blast beating person and who knows if I could even really achieve anything of

00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:51.340
with that kind of extreme playing. But I really do like the extreme speeds and like the pool endurance stuff and the like just all the crazy shit that Matt can do. And when I was writing music for Immortal Bird after the first EP, which I did play on, I decided like I didn't want my own abilities to limit the band. I just wanted to make the music that I wanted to make and then see who could play it. And so it was pretty easy for me to just be like, nah, I'm.

00:09:51.420 --> 00:09:55.460
I'm just going to do the vocals for this now. You know, just to show you that we're a full

00:09:55.600 --> 00:10:20.000
service podcast, I wouldn't chase down your timestamp there. And I think it's at about a minute and 30 seconds. It's the part where it slows down a little bit. Oh, well, good. You're right. That kind of moshy-moshy part, right? Where it kind of gets real serious and circle pity. Maybe. I mean, sure. Way to go, Jay. Yeah, let's just say yeah. Thanks for that detail, Jay. Yeah, real-time stuff.

00:10:22.160 --> 00:10:49.620
So, Ray, you write all the lyrics for Immortal Bird. I'm a writer, and I have all these notebooks lying around to jot down ideas and pieces of dialogue. So I was wondering, when you think of something, ideas come to you, how do you record them? And then how do you go about building off of those ideas later? I mean, it's pretty typical. I have a notes app, and I write little notes if I'm on the train or sitting in my house or whatever.

00:10:50.080 --> 00:11:19.940
So yeah, I write down lots of ideas in my phone or my computer or just analog. I have notebooks and stuff. Yeah, it's a lot like that. Sometimes I'll come up with a concept and really commit to it. So like, I'll know something is going to be a song title, and then I'll take it from there. Or like, I'll build the whole song around a line that I came up with. But like, I decided on the name Thrive on Neglect three years ago. And everything else was a lot more recent. But like, I knew for a really long time,

00:11:20.060 --> 00:11:47.320
that was going to be the name of the album, and that probably informed the work. But it didn't inform the music, probably, as much as just the lyrical content. So where did you come up with the name, Thrive on Neglect? I wish I had a deep story for you, because it definitely has deep personal meaning for me, and I feel like it's pretty open-ended. However, I discovered it because I was in a gardening store, and it was on a little cactus. It said, I thrive on neglect.

00:11:49.460 --> 00:12:19.420
That's actually a funny story. Did you buy the cactus? I actually didn't because I wanted it to thrive on the glass. I'm curious. While we're here and figuring out the origins of things, I really do wonder where the name Immortal Bird came from and if it's a reference to anything specific in your mind or is it just like a cool fucking name? It's probably not an albatross given the way they get killed. True. Well, my friend, this question has been answered so many times in so many interviews and I'm not sure what's going on.

00:12:19.460 --> 00:12:49.380
I answer it differently a lot now because I'm just over it. Just make shit up. Yeah, make shit up. I don't care. We can move on. That's fine. No, I have to decide, like, do I just tell you the truth, like the concise truth, or do I, like, spin a yarn? We're good with either. Well, okay. It's definitely not after the Keats poem, but no shade to Keats. It's just not about that thou wast not born for death, immortal bird, that poem. It's not that. Well, I'll just give you the truth.

00:12:49.460 --> 00:13:19.240
If you deserve it, you're nice people. It's named after the current 93 song, Immortal Bird. That's it. Oh, current 93. Sure. Cool. Yeah, that was, there you go. There you go. Well, I was going to say, Ray, I live in Chicago too, and I go to a lot of shows because we have so many great venues for metal, but I was wondering what you thought of the metal scene in Chicago right now in terms of the profile and visibility.

00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:49.420
of metal in our city, but also as a place where bands can come up. At first, I thought you were going to call me out for not going to a lot of shows. I thought you were going to a lot of shows, and I've never seen you in the fucking pit. I was going to be like, oh my god. I haven't. I'd say no. Yeah, you know, it takes a lot to get me to go out, and I don't mean that like it takes a lot to impress me. I just mean I'm like a stereotypical, like nerdy, shy, socially awkward metal person who doesn't

00:13:49.440 --> 00:13:51.680
and I don't fucking go outside ever but

00:13:52.760 --> 00:13:57.620
let's see what do I think of the scene well when I was like a bright-eyed 21 year old and I

00:13:57.900 --> 00:14:03.400
moved here I was very excited because I didn't know about any of like the toxic inner workings behind the

00:14:03.590 --> 00:14:09.580
curtain type like band situations going on with like not to mystium is the big example I was just like

00:14:10.060 --> 00:14:16.600
oh not to mystium is from here that's cool I saw them like open for cradle of filth like neat and like

00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:45.840
Indian, who are still fucking dope, and are friends. They were big then. And Lord Mantis, too. And I was in a band called Mares of Thrace that was pretty cool. Well, not from Chicago, but they had relocated to Chicago. And I was pretty impressed with the Chicago metal scene back then and thought it was really booming. I think maybe it was back then. More people were talking about it. Now, there are definitely still a lot of really good bands coming up. I don't know.

00:14:47.260 --> 00:14:51.220
But it seems like the same bands that have been like pretty big and awesome for a while

00:14:51.560 --> 00:14:58.760
like Losing Wound is still awesome but they were great back when we started like same with Russian Circles and Pelican and stuff like that

00:15:01.160 --> 00:15:16.580
like there's definitely a lot of good bands like for sure I think it's a it's a good scene I don't think it has quite the buzz that like Denver does right now or Portland does sometimes or Philly does sometimes but it could I think it happens in waves and I think it's definitely still

00:15:16.580 --> 00:15:45.740
Like, I don't know, like, a city that is a player in the overall scene, but I also, like, super don't give a shit. Like, you know what I mean? Like, I don't know, because, like, I'm not really, like, from here, and I can't really gauge how much, like, geography and, like, socioeconomic, like, geography affects a sound yet, because, like, I haven't been here that long, but I'm starting to understand. That's right. You're from our neck of the woods, aren't you? Northern Virginia.

00:15:46.580 --> 00:16:16.500
Yes, indeed. I'm from Fairfax, Virginia. It is a fiendish hellscape of which I hope to never return. You know, I think that's what it says on their Chamber of Commerce page, too. Yeah. You know, it's nothing against Fairfax itself, per se, but, like, I just, I think a lot of people just don't want to go back to their hometown. When did you move to Chicago? In 2012. Yeah, that's pretty recent. Yeah, I mean,

00:16:16.580 --> 00:16:43.900
It feels like a long time now, but I don't really have a place that I would rather go at the moment. I said that too, and now I'm going to Hawaii. Dude, well, you know what? You get that call. You pick up the phone. I don't think that my mind even allows me to accept Hawaii as a real place that exists. That's not an option for me. Oh, I haven't accepted it either. It's like a fantasy. It's going to make podcasting really fun.

00:16:46.580 --> 00:17:16.199
What'd you say, Ray? I said, oh, well, I'll accept it for you. I was bluffing. I'll just bluffing. I think she'll accept the position for you. Have you been there? Ray, have you been to Hawaii? No, never. I went on a few Caribbean vacations as a kid, which I obviously did not appreciate at the time, but can recognize the beauty now, but we never went to Hawaii and I always wanted to go. You said that you don't really go to shows,

00:17:16.560 --> 00:17:46.080
What do you do in Chicago for fun? What kind of Chicago food do you like? What do you do here? Oh, I mean, okay. Like, I do go to some shows, and sometimes I go to a lot of them. Like, especially right when we get back from tour, I'll usually go the, like, two or three in a week just because I don't want to be at home anymore. But going to shows is okay. I work a lot on music by myself in my house. I'm vegan. Chicago has a really good vegan food.

00:17:46.100 --> 00:18:11.720
scene, if you will. So it's pretty easy to find good food at all hours of the day, pretty much. What do I do? I'm like, I do stuff, right? I like to paint and like draw and do that kind of stuff. I don't know. I'm very, I'm like crafty, but I'm not an artist, but I do enjoy a good craft night. Speaking of art, who did the album artwork?

00:18:17.940 --> 00:18:19.060
She's amazing.

00:18:21.240 --> 00:18:22.520
She has quite a following.

00:18:22.680 --> 00:18:24.600
She doesn't need our plug or anything.

00:18:24.700 --> 00:18:27.300
But of course, I just support her completely.

00:18:27.580 --> 00:18:33.020
She's been nothing but insanely kind and supportive and humble this entire time we've worked with her.

00:18:33.540 --> 00:18:36.620
I really don't see us ever using anyone else for our covers.

00:18:37.060 --> 00:18:43.940
And I think we'll probably commission something in particular from her, specifically for us.

00:18:44.040 --> 00:19:13.560
I've used her pre-existing stuff in the past just because it's resonated with me so strongly. I haven't really felt a need to tailor it more, but I can't even imagine what she would come up with if we actually explained an album concept and had her do that. So yeah, she's absolutely amazing. So you don't know what's going on in this album cover? I mean, I do know what's going on, but I also think it's very open to interpretation. So when you look at it, it means whatever you think it means.

00:19:13.640 --> 00:19:43.560
That's the really cool thing about art. Is that the same little girl from the first album? No, I don't think that it is. She draws all different. And there's a different kid inside the album artwork, too. The album art is awesome, but I'm kind of disappointed you didn't take a picture of that cactus and use it as the cover. That would have been like... No, I laugh because I see bands who are insane.

00:19:44.740 --> 00:19:45.600
and super successful.

00:19:45.920 --> 00:19:47.600
And their album art fucking sucks.

00:19:47.800 --> 00:19:48.760
They made it on their phone.

00:19:48.860 --> 00:19:49.980
And they probably did.

00:19:50.600 --> 00:19:51.200
And that's fine.

00:19:51.480 --> 00:19:53.700
I didn't know about the content they're in.

00:19:53.780 --> 00:19:59.120
But I'm like, man, I stressed out and thought about this for months.

00:19:59.380 --> 00:20:01.260
And like, oh my god, the layout.

00:20:02.179 --> 00:20:02.580
Yeah.

00:20:02.820 --> 00:20:03.820
Put a little thought into it.

00:20:04.820 --> 00:20:05.680
Yeah, I tried.

00:20:06.020 --> 00:20:10.040
I mean, old guys like us, that's how we decide whether to listen to an album or not.

00:20:10.560 --> 00:20:13.420
You know, back in the 80s, it was like, does that have cool artwork?

00:20:13.520 --> 00:20:14.500
Okay, I'll listen to it.

00:20:15.559 --> 00:20:22.680
And that's why you do have to be careful, because if there had just been a picture of that cactus at Home Depot, we all would have been like, a punk record.

00:20:25.460 --> 00:20:30.820
Well, no, the cactus would have to be on there somewhere in time. It'd have to be buried kind of maybe behind the kid.

00:20:31.779 --> 00:20:35.840
You wouldn't know why it was there until you got in-depth.

00:20:37.180 --> 00:20:42.120
Hey, Ray, have you ever heard of this wiki fact or fiction thing they do online with musicians?

00:20:43.080 --> 00:21:13.040
Oh, no, I haven't. Yeah, they get a bunch of old musicians, and they go through their wiki page and ask them stuff. I'm not asking because I want to go through your wiki page, but I did see something on Metal Encyclopedia I wanted to ask you about. Did you go to Berklee? Oh, yeah. You did? Okay, cool. And did you go for drums and percussion, or did you go for anything else? I went for drums. I graduated with a degree in professional music, but I had an emphasis in drum performance. Awesome. That's very cool.

00:21:14.140 --> 00:21:42.460
I wanted to ask, were there other bands there that we might know, other musicians that at the same time that have kind of made it or come along? And I think of like, you know, Dream Theater, all those guys ended up there at school and they ended up forming the band there. And there's been a boatload of musicians that have come out of there, but you don't hear sometimes too many bands that form there or that stick together afterwards. So I'm curious, was there anybody that you knew that kind of made it along with you? You know, made it in the metal scene?

00:21:43.100 --> 00:22:13.020
There's lots of individual people that made it far beyond what I've experienced, who I went to school with, who are awesome. But I'm trying to think of bands of all Berkeley people. Oh, yeah, dude, Bent Knee is a fucking amazing band. Yeah, I know. It formed at Berkeley. While I was there, I know Ben and Jess. I mean, I feel like we were friends in college. We lost touch, but I fucking fully support what they do. They're such amazing players. I'm so glad that they got to do that Dillinger farewell tour and all the other things that they've done.

00:22:13.100 --> 00:22:42.980
And I'm like, yeah, that is a band that formed at Berklee while I was there of Berklee kids who like fucking rule. That's very cool. I'm sure there were so many people there for so many different types of music that it's kind of hard to comprehend the amount of musicianship when you're there. Oh, yeah, it's pretty unbelievable. I mean, there are some kids there who are like, fine and who are like, we're the greatest musicians in the world. And I'm like, no, like, there's a lot of privilege that goes into going to Berklee.

00:22:43.100 --> 00:23:13.000
We're definitely not the best in the world. Some of us are, but most of us aren't. So everyone needs to just chill. But yeah, I mean, for the most part, I was blown away by the level of talent that I was around every day. And yeah, I met some of the most amazing people. It's a cool school. I mean, it gets shit on the lot for being pretentious and douchey and too expensive. And all of those things are true. But I also got to see Paul Simon sing The Only Living Boy in New York. So like... That's cool.

00:23:13.080 --> 00:23:42.240
That was cool. They take care of the students. They provide you with a lot of excellent opportunities. No, that's awesome. But I still don't answer the phone when they call trying to ask for it. None of us do. Charitable contribution. It's never going to fucking happen. I read that you work as a music teacher. I was wondering what your favorite part about teaching music is. Oh my God. All of it? So, I don't know.

00:23:43.100 --> 00:24:12.760
Being able to be like a positive musical impact on a kid is so huge and it doesn't even mean that you're like the one that takes them to the next level with their playing but it's like you show them a band they end up liking. Like I named dropped the Jesus Lizard the other day and now we have a student he's like 10 and he's obsessed with the Jesus Lizard now. That means a lot to me and I feel like if I had found that band at his age I would have been able to hone my music taste a little bit earlier and I would have felt a little more at home.

00:24:13.080 --> 00:24:42.980
in what I was listening to, you know? So that, but also just like seeing them enjoy music, seeing them understand music, watching them improve and seeing that you had any kind of part in it is really, really rewarding. I also just feel like I'm a better musician now from having had to teach them stuff. I've heard that before. It rules. It's like the cheesiest, cutest, best job ever. And there's like really just nothing shitty that I can say about.

00:24:43.799 --> 00:25:12.660
That's great. Well, so let's turn that around then. Who were some of your influences then growing up? I mean, we don't get too many single people on the, you know, one person on the podcast that's a drummer. And me being a drummer like decades ago. In a past life. Yeah. Many past lives. I'm curious, you know, who your influences were. Because, I mean, I have George. I always joke with George about the drummers that I like and he just rolls his eyes. If you don't see Neil Peart, he's going to freaking cry.

00:25:13.080 --> 00:25:42.300
That is a given. I don't have to go there. No, but I'm curious who some of your influences might have been. So Neil is a given and like Rush is one of my favorite bands of all time. When, when, when. I directed our School of Rock Presents Rush show last season and it fucking slayed. Yeah. Yeah. We did like subdivisions and Limelight and Tom. What a perfect song for school subdivisions. That's great.

00:25:43.100 --> 00:26:12.080
Yeah. Absolutely. It was awesome. But anyway, so yes, I love him. In terms of like metal people. I'll tell you why I'm curious, but not to cut you off. I'm sorry. You'd mentioned that you didn't know if you wanted to continue in a mortal bird playing metal drumming. You weren't as enthusiastic. So I'm definitely more interested in hearing who any of your influences were. Okay. Well, perfect. So one of my favorite drummers of all time is Vinny Kaliuta.

00:26:13.080 --> 00:26:42.740
I really like Steve Gadd. I love Steve Smith. All the Steve's. Wow. Steve Smith drop. Awesome. Steve Smith is incredible. He's so nice, too. I met him and told him I was really nervous, and he very quietly said, oh, don't be nervous. I'm just Steve, and it was really cute. Who else? Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree, and he also plays with King Crimson. Oh, yeah. I've seen Gavin.

00:26:43.080 --> 00:27:12.980
more than a few times live. So I know about him. Yeah. So I love him. I love him. In terms of career trajectory and overall playing, Josh Freeze is one of my heroes because he's played with like a perfect circle, nine inch nails, fucking Paramore. I'm pretty sure he played with Sheryl Crow. He's just like all over the place. And I love him so much. Devo also. Yeah, he plays the fucking Devo. So was he in the Vandals? Was that was Josh Freeze in the Vandals? Yeah, totally. Was he in Guns N' Roses for a while? Maybe. It wouldn't surprise me.

00:27:13.080 --> 00:27:43.020
That sounds like the middle years, like the we're not going to put on an album years. The Chinese democracy years. Yeah. Oh, I also always forget his name, and I don't know why that is, but the drummer for Russian Circles is a fucking god, and I absolutely love his style and all of his fills and just his whole way of playing. He's awesome. Nice. But yeah, gosh, who else? Yeah, and it's so funny because all of mine, I mean, outside of Neil, I have a completely different influence.

00:27:43.100 --> 00:28:13.060
It's like guitar players. Jay, I'm sure you could attest this. You have all your favorites and you talk to someone about it and you're not even anywhere on the same page. Wait, who are some of your favorites? So I'm a huge Virgil Donati fan. Wait, I like Virgil a lot too, but it's complicated because I don't know much about him as a person and I'm like, oh, he's so weird. But I love his book. He's hard to keep up with when you watch him. Yeah, oh, he's fantastic. He's a little like above my pay grade though. Like I enjoy watching him like I would enjoy

00:28:13.140 --> 00:28:18.620
watching anything that I have no clue about you know exactly I'm a I'm a huge Derek

00:28:18.780 --> 00:28:25.940
Sherinian fan who is a Berklee alum and so I'm I'm big on all that fusion kind of metalish fusion stuff they do so

00:28:26.020 --> 00:28:34.480
that's how I got into Virgil Donati um I was a huge I'm by far the oldest person here so I remember I'm a huge Tony Thompson fan so

00:28:37.040 --> 00:28:42.079
no okay you guys weren't uh listening to let's dance when it came out with Bowie released that but Tony

00:28:42.100 --> 00:28:46.200
Thompson Thompson was the drummer on that who ended up then being from I think is it Chick Corea or

00:28:46.240 --> 00:29:12.060
something not Chick Corea I can't remember the band he was in before that but so I'm into a lot of stuff like that so that's a great band too you know who played guitar in that band and of course you know John which one let's dance oh well Carlos Alomar and Steve Ray Vaughan of course yeah by the way I I'm looking at the Josh Fries Wikipedia discography and I it's not even worth saying it because there's it's so many things here you

00:29:12.080 --> 00:29:42.000
That is just overwhelming overwhelming. He's not a fucking idol. I want his exact life. You know, there's probably about 70 entries here. I'm just going to read you some key ones. Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Bruce Springsteen, Deebo, Julianne Hadfield, Paul Westerberg. It just goes on and on and on and on. This is insane. Deebo, as mentioned, and A Perfect Circle, of course. Jesus, this is insane. So, Jay, my one last influence, I'm sorry, is kind of like this guy.

00:29:42.080 --> 00:30:06.460
I'm a big Hannes Grossman fan who apparently plays with everybody. I love him too. I really like him. I like Jamie St. Murat a little bit better but I love Hannes Grossman's YouTube videos because he's always like hello my name is Hannes Grossman. And apparently he plays for Tripticon and that's when John decides that he has to sit in the back of the venue and not watch him when everyone else is like literally 10 feet from him. You're never gonna let that go.

00:30:12.060 --> 00:30:42.040
I don't know if I've seen him play with anybody else but probably because he's all over the place yeah awesome I'm glad I got that said thanks oh yeah I love everyone who's better than me so that leaves a lot of room so that means I like every drummer on planet earth well I cannot throw shade to that degree everyone's better everyone I've been recently listening to some Thomas Lang stuff and I'm just my mind just freezes when

00:30:42.080 --> 00:31:12.040
I listen to him play he's unreal oh yeah he totally is my drum teacher showed him to me a little too early and it like broke me for a second yeah yeah he's on the new Arch Matheos album and it's it's too much he's so good I love that Arch Matheos shit that they put out like a long time ago like their first thing I had two words also like sympathetic resonance yeah yeah that shit was fucking lit but I have not checked out the new stuff but I'll bet I would love it

00:31:12.040 --> 00:31:42.020
It's just a logical... You'll recognize it. Let's put it that way. They didn't trample any new ground. It's a little heavier than the last one, I think. Awesome. Where's your Throssenblock questions, George? Oh, they're coming. Believe me. They're down the road. I'm trying to compartmentalize everything. And Marcus, that's the build-up, the big crescendo to the end, the grand finale. Well, I was... Because of what John asked, I was moving down my list here because

00:31:42.040 --> 00:32:12.020
There was something that was a little more relevant. And I wanted to know, how did you start playing? What did you start playing? What got you into playing? Well, I was a pretty good figure skater. Not good enough to pay my parents' bills with it, but good enough that it really complicated my life. And I was waking up at 4 o'clock in the morning and training very seriously. And it was a thing. But it got to a point where it was like, you need to either continue getting better extremely quickly, or you need to

00:32:15.600 --> 00:32:16.400
And like,

00:32:16.940 --> 00:32:18.000
what are we going to do here?

00:32:18.400 --> 00:32:20.620
So I quit kind of begrudgingly.

00:32:20.620 --> 00:32:21.260
I was super depressed.

00:32:22.100 --> 00:32:24.640
I'd already been listening to metal while I was a figure skater,

00:32:24.760 --> 00:32:27.480
but my tastes got a little darker because I was upset.

00:32:27.660 --> 00:32:27.980
And like,

00:32:28.540 --> 00:32:29.980
I wasn't playing drums yet,

00:32:30.040 --> 00:32:33.900
but there was this cool kid I went to high school with in my math class who did play drums.

00:32:34.140 --> 00:32:35.680
And he was talking about how,

00:32:35.780 --> 00:32:35.860
yeah,

00:32:35.880 --> 00:32:37.500
he took drum lessons at the place,

00:32:37.580 --> 00:32:39.520
like around the corner from the school and like,

00:32:39.680 --> 00:32:39.800
whatever.

00:32:40.640 --> 00:32:40.880
And,

00:32:40.880 --> 00:32:40.980
uh,

00:32:41.760 --> 00:33:10.960
I don't know he was cool he had amazing music taste for our age and I was like drums seem cool and my mom was always like he'd be a great drummer because I'd like hit stuff in rhythm I guess when I was a little kid I don't know no like what kind of stuff people no just like cushions and like my own legs but maybe others um so I was like mom I want to play drums and she's like no they're loud and you don't even know if that's what you want to do so I was like please

00:33:11.680 --> 00:33:40.940
Eventually she decided to let me take a trial lesson and it was like the fucking best thing that ever happened to me and I was just fully hooked after one lesson and just like my teacher ruled and I like immediately connected with it so hard. I was like, this is it. Like, this is my whole shit now. That's a funny. There's a funny parallel here because George had to make a very similar decision about figure skating at a young age. Man, I talked to him the exact same thing. I have skated. No, I can't

00:33:40.980 --> 00:34:10.940
I have put on skates once did not end well yeah I broke my arm on a lesson in a lesson I broke my spirit over many well yeah which probably hurts a little more than the arm I admit I'm all right now you look fine what song or artist has had a major impact on your life and why a song or artist

00:34:10.980 --> 00:34:40.659
Or album, you know, essentially. Well, yeah. A musical Big Bang, whatever it is. So I'm just picking one, but I'm not picking, like, the one. Well, the song Wonderful Slippery Thing by Guthrie Govan, like, fucked my whole shit up when I was, I guess, a freshman or a sophomore in high school. Because before that, I'd only been playing drums for a little while, and I was playing a lot of pop and a lot of, like, metal-type rock stuff.

00:34:40.980 --> 00:35:10.880
But I hadn't really listened to much funk fusion, if any at all, really consciously. And that song and the drumming on it in particular, like Guthrie obviously is like a shit hot, incredible fusion guitarist, but it was the drumming on that song. I was just like, music can be like this. Like I was just a little mind blown. And I decided like I wanted to learn how to play that stuff. So that just segued into like Weather Report and Tower of Power and just like Earth, Wind and Fire and like Herbie Hancock and just like a whole bunch of other shit.

00:35:12.420 --> 00:35:37.640
So that was super impactful. Just hearing that song, I was like, what? Better late than never, I guess. Interesting. So when you got into metal, where did you start? What bands initially drew your attention and made you decide you wanted to hear more? It was kind of like a little of this, a little of that, but nothing that would really shock you.

00:35:40.980 --> 00:36:10.320
was going on at the time like but but like a little proggy or so like corn deftones but also like tool i was super into tool and a perfect circle um who else i really really liked rush and like um king crimson and porcupine tree and like proggy things um i started liking opeth but then i like kind of went too far and was listening to like vader

00:36:10.980 --> 00:36:40.300
and like behemoth and like kind of more brutal shit so I was like Opeth is stupid like I love Opeth except when he sings clean I like fucking hate that shit like so I kind of like turned away for a second and like then I was like lamb of god and children of bodum and then I like came back a little bit and I was like only post rock is real and so like I was all over the place um but yeah I did I don't think I had like particularly

00:36:40.300 --> 00:37:09.900
like dope niche metal music taste. I, you know, the internet was a thing. I was like downloading shit illegally and looking stuff up, but I like wasn't reading decibel and I wasn't on message boards and like I wasn't super engaged in the metal community. I was just like a singular person with like a metal friend here and there, but there wasn't like a metal group in my high school really, or if there was like they were very hidden from me and they didn't, they didn't let themselves be known to me.

00:37:12.180 --> 00:37:39.880
They're a metal crew. I don't fucking know. W.T. Woodson, class of 2009, was there? Yeah, you know, I have the same. I've always wondered that about my school. Did I come down the hall and they were like, oh, here he comes, man. Everybody put your shit away. You know what I mean? Because I was the only guy. You know what I mean? Jackets and like patch vests and you guys were like, what the fuck happened? Don't let him know we like this stuff. Otherwise, he's going to want to talk to us. Yeah. I had my folk metal nerd friends, my friends.

00:37:39.960 --> 00:38:09.940
I would go to Summer Slaughter with. That was a thing. Summer Slaughter and Pagan Fest. Every year, man. Gotta get them. Gotta get them done. How did you get involved with the Doom Eternal video game soundtrack? Oh my gosh. Well, my drummer Matt is really, really into gaming. More specifically, Doom. He loves it. He was always showing us stuff from the Doom 2016 soundtrack that Mick did. I love it. We all love it. We were playing it a

00:38:10.880 --> 00:38:38.740
I was listening to it just a lot. I liked it a lot. And then while we were recording with Dave, actually, that's when Mick put out his open call for vocalists. And, you know, Matt told me about it. And I was like, holy shit. Yeah, maybe I'll do it. And or no, maybe he told me before we recorded, but I thought I had more time. But while we were recording, it turned out he shortened the deadline like a ton. So I was like, oh, shit. So I was like, I guess I have to figure out if I want to do this or not.

00:38:38.820 --> 00:39:08.760
And I was really kind of apprehensive. I figured that he would get so many entries. He'd end up picking like bigger names or maybe like calling it from a pool that got narrowed down for him. And like that's no judgment. I just figured that's how it was going to be. Like Bethesda was going to handle it and then give Mick like 20 people to choose from or whatever. But that's like not the case. Like a few thousand people submitted shit and he listened to every single person's submission and he picked like the team that he ended up with. And I ended up being one of them. It was crazy.

00:39:08.820 --> 00:39:37.260
because when I showed up that day, I knew a ton of people already. My friend Emma from Vault Dweller was there. Gosh, my friend Sven from Aborted was there. It was nuts. Just people that I had known for a while were there. It was cool. But yeah, I just sent a clip of our performance at Migration Fest, actually. And then I got an email back a couple weeks later being like, can you come to Austin or whatever? Yeah.

00:39:38.400 --> 00:40:08.320
It was a huge honor. It was the coolest thing that I feel like I've ever done. Pretty much. Yeah, it's really neat. It's not the kind of thing a lot of people get to do. Oh, I feel supremely lucky. Every single person there was fucking incredible. And I was just like honored. Like truly. It was so cool. And just, by the way, that game is going to be insane. It's going to be like, ah, like just based on the playthrough videos and stuff that I've seen, like the little like story teaser.

00:40:08.400 --> 00:40:37.440
I saw. Oh my god. Yeah, it's crazy. It's going to be really sharp looking and just insane. Oh, that's awesome. That is a super awesome thing to be involved in. Yeah, I'm incredibly excited. I still kind of can't believe it happened. Very much. If that's who's making it, I assume it has always been good about that. I don't know if you know that, probably you know, I'm guessing you do. I saw you wearing a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt on your Facebook page. But they did the original soundtrack for the original Quake.

00:40:38.420 --> 00:40:38.880
Yeah.

00:40:39.560 --> 00:40:39.820
Yeah.

00:40:40.060 --> 00:40:41.980
And they always seem to get cool people involved.

00:40:42.080 --> 00:40:43.460
So somebody down there is a cool person.

00:40:43.500 --> 00:40:45.680
I mean, well, it sounds like somebody you worked with was cool, but.

00:40:46.780 --> 00:40:46.960
Yeah.

00:40:47.140 --> 00:40:53.440
Oh, every single person that was like on the team for it, like helping Mick was fucking amazing, too.

00:40:53.660 --> 00:40:55.500
It was just like a really cool crew of people.

00:40:55.860 --> 00:40:58.020
Mick Gordon is a gem of a person.

00:40:58.300 --> 00:41:00.040
He's like not of this world.

00:41:00.160 --> 00:41:03.520
I mean, I get that he's from Australia, but I don't know, man.

00:41:03.720 --> 00:41:07.280
Like, he's just a super genius, but also has incredible social skills.

00:41:07.500 --> 00:41:37.420
And I'm like, what? You can't do both. What are you doing? He's a fucking musical genius, but also led us all through the session beautifully and was just super chill and had listened to everybody's individual projects. What a dope-ass dude. Anyone who's on the fence about Doom for one reason or another, buy it for that guy. Is Id in Austin or is it just that's where they did the recording?

00:41:37.500 --> 00:42:07.460
stuff. I think, I mean, maybe they're, are they in Austin? I think, well, I do think they're a Texas company that you mentioned it. Yeah. I think they're in Texas, if not in Austin. So yeah, they had people on site and like, there were people filming and shit. It was very cool. They're in Dallas. They're from Dallas, Texas. I know you had a few shows recently. Are there any plans to hit the road once the album comes out? Yeah. Um, we have like three or four shows lined up in July, just like a

00:42:07.500 --> 00:42:37.080
a little mini whatever kind of around our album release show here in Chicago. And then we're going to see what happens. Yeah, there's some things cooking. We have some things we want to do. We definitely need to do a full U.S. tour. We want to go back to Europe in 2020. So that's like a thing. Yeah, we got we got some ideas. Awesome. You know, we're I mentioned already. We were fortunate enough to have the promo. We get a lot of promos because of the podcast.

00:42:37.500 --> 00:43:06.900
What is the release date on the album? July 5th. July 5th, thanks. Yeah, and actually I'm looking forward to the listening party at Bucket O'Blood. I love that record store so much. Me too. It is so cool. I love it, and I really love the location too. Oh yeah, because, well, you're a vegan, but it's right near Kuma's, which is my only favorite place. My favorite thing there is an Impossible Burger. Oh, that's right. I forgot they did that. I've never tried that. Do you like it? It's really good.

00:43:07.500 --> 00:43:37.100
It tastes a lot like meat. It's almost like weird. You really have to kind of think about it. Have you had the Beyond Burger yet? Yeah. So I prefer the Beyond Burger for like everyday use. Also, Impossible Burgers still aren't commercially available. So like I can't go out and buy an Impossible Burger. They just get like sold restaurants and stuff. Yeah. So I would say the Beyond Burger edges out the Impossible for overall taste and enjoyability.

00:43:37.520 --> 00:44:07.420
The Impossible Burger feels like more of an indulgence, and it's definitely the meatier option. I could agree with you pretty much 100%. I like The Beyond better. I went to a baseball game here yesterday, Oakland A's, and they're serving The Impossible Burger there, too. And you can't find it in stores anymore. I guess, like, literally it's not, is what you're saying. But I bought The Beyond in stores, and they even package them like hamburgers, which I'm sure you noticed if you bought them. Have you seen them, Marcus? Yeah, totally. They're super cute. I haven't gotten The Beyond,

00:44:07.480 --> 00:44:36.860
Sausages yet? I just don't like how they look. They're not good. You know what? They're not good. Okay, well, I trust you on that. I didn't need much convincing. They look weird. I'm a vegetarian, and so the fake meat stuff, I'm pretty judgy about it. They don't taste, they miss the mark. They don't taste like, I don't even know what it tasted like. It was some whole weird thing of its own that I did not like. I haven't seen it in person. I've just seen videos where they have beet blood or something, so it makes it look like it's got blood. I want that vegan burger medium.

00:44:37.480 --> 00:45:05.380
Rare. At Safeway, they put them in the meat department. I don't really like vegetables at all. I like meat, but I'm always down for trying something new. There's a lot of really good vegan places in Chicago, and I will try it. I just have a hard time pulling the trigger on the Impossible Burger or the Beyond Burger because it's like a substitute for meat. Why do I want the substitute when I can have the real thing? Spoken like the guy who writes Voracious. Yeah, right on.

00:45:07.500 --> 00:45:37.460
I go to Kumas and get whatever burger you usually get with like all the usual shit even if it's like bacon and like whatever the fuck but just get an impossible burger instead of the normal one and like see how you feel I know I support you might be surprised here's the problem right every time I go to Kumas I get the burger of the month because I've had all the other burgers no but they can do it any style they'll give you whatever style unless the burger of the month is like emu or something like that's what you're saying

00:45:37.740 --> 00:46:07.400
You learn that as a vegetarian. You're like, give me a Reuben. I want a Reuben, but with a garden burger. Which, by the way, is a good Reuben. Awful, actually. But, yeah, I really hope that we get a burger of the month at some point. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, kumas. I know you follow us on Instagram. I know you know who we are. Yeah, they should have done that a long time ago. That's ridiculous. Maybe we'll get one. And honestly, it's okay if it's not vegan. It can be like a chicken one, I guess.

00:46:07.480 --> 00:46:37.460
We're a bird band, and I'm the only vegan. I just think it'd be nice. But yeah, you know, I won't sweat it. I feel like it's going to happen. And, you know, it's up there on my list of goals. But, you know, it's okay. Well, you know what? Oh, go ahead. Go ahead, Mark. Go ahead. You know, Grant and Jenny from Bucket of Blood, that's our record store. I didn't mention that earlier, but it's like my favorite record store. They know those people over at Kuma, so we should try to lobby them. Oh, I don't think we should bother them about

00:46:37.480 --> 00:47:07.460
I feel like it would just be a matter of us being like could we please have a burger and they'd be like we'll see when we can fit it into the schedule and they would give us a burger like their least popular location for like four days and that would be great and we would love that awesome Ray can I ask you quick about um and I ask if someone who's been removing certain types of meat from my diet and definitely see myself as a vegetarian or a vegan someday can I ask what led you to uh or

00:47:07.500 --> 00:47:37.180
led you down the path to becoming a vegan? Honestly, like this is the... There is a very, very specific story. And my bandmates know it. And my best friends know it. But no one else will ever know it. But there is a very specific reason why I went vegan. And I will leave it at that. And I will never, ever discuss it. Honestly, ever. Big cattle decapitation fan? Right on. I am a big cattle decap fan, actually. Same. They are fucking sick.

00:47:37.980 --> 00:47:38.780
Yeah, they are.

00:47:42.519 --> 00:47:43.980
Will would like to join us now.

00:47:44.140 --> 00:47:46.080
His schedule has opened up.

00:47:46.260 --> 00:47:47.340
Let me dial him in real quick.

00:47:48.280 --> 00:47:48.600
Hey, Will.

00:47:50.040 --> 00:47:50.440
Hey, Will.

00:47:50.880 --> 00:47:51.720
Call me maybe.

00:47:52.020 --> 00:47:52.360
There you are.

00:47:53.220 --> 00:47:53.880
Say hello to Ray.

00:47:55.140 --> 00:47:55.260
Hello.

00:47:56.380 --> 00:47:58.180
I'd like to see Will's sweet Viking shirts.

00:47:58.620 --> 00:47:59.640
Yeah, that's a brimming horn.

00:48:01.780 --> 00:48:02.480
Oh, brimming horn.

00:48:02.760 --> 00:48:02.840
Nice.

00:48:03.060 --> 00:48:03.180
Yeah.

00:48:03.420 --> 00:48:03.720
Yeah.

00:48:04.140 --> 00:48:05.280
I think I might have one of them.

00:48:06.359 --> 00:48:35.040
Anyway. All right. So, yes. Ray, Will, Will, Ray. Hi. Sorry he wasn't here earlier. Do you have any questions for her? No, I'm just going to lurk in the background like Matt. We're going to Oklahoma tomorrow to see my mom. So, today was like a crazy day of packing and getting everything ready, making sure that the neighbors can water grass,

00:48:35.400 --> 00:49:03.040
water shrubs, feed fish, and I got them all drunk. That's what I do. Like you do, Will. I'm the enabler. I'm just here to enjoy and lurk and just revel in immortal bird greatness. Thank you, Will. I got up because it's hot in my room, so I had to go get a fan. And this completely changed while I was going. So I'm back here, and now Will's here, and now we see Ray. You're welcome.

00:49:05.400 --> 00:49:34.620
Hey, buddy. I miss you guys. We don't do this often. Hey, got your party like at 1739? Is that what it is? 793. They're just having their festival, I think, in the next... It was like a week or day ago. They just had it. If we ever actually schedule a mid-year... What was that? My fan is really loud, but it's helping. So I'm sorry. No worries. There you go.

00:49:35.380 --> 00:50:04.640
Yeah, it's getting warm in my room, too, though. It's a nice 71 degrees here. I don't know what it is here. I don't like it. What's it? You know you're here. It's hot. You know what I do is I'm in my office, so I crank the air conditioner all day to like at 50 and then turn it off. So it's still cold for like the three hours. Yeah, you guys are both in Chicago land, right? We've talked about it. Yeah. So why are you not like sitting in the same room? We never met. She doesn't go to shows.

00:50:05.420 --> 00:50:35.200
that we're not psychopaths yet. First of all, I don't have a C, so like, why am I not there? Exactly. All right. I'll mute my mic and just listen. I feel bad, you know. We're having one of those perfect barriers. Shut up with your goddamn California weather, Jay. I went to the ballgame yesterday. It was 72 degrees, blue skies, dude. It was like being dead. I would imagine.

00:50:35.400 --> 00:51:03.640
hopefully some good kind of an afterlife. It's been nice here, but it's supposed to get shitty this week. Yeah, this week's going to suck. I'll be happy if it was only 73 when I'm sleeping. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So speaking of other places, we have a listener from Canada, from Fredericton, New Brunswick specifically, who wanted us to ask you about the size of wasps in Ontario.

00:51:05.400 --> 00:51:35.200
The size of wasps in Ontario? That doesn't ring any bells. I mean, they're fucking huge, but I don't know about it. Joel asked me to ask you that. God, the wasps are insane, but the fly population is also nothing to scoff at. And Joel tried to make me feel better while we were recording because I rolled over on one when I was sleeping and it was just crushed in my bed. And he was like, think of how genetically similar.

00:51:35.400 --> 00:52:05.080
A Fly is to a Blueberry. And I was like, you're fucking ridiculous. You're like the best person. I can't believe it. Oh my gosh. Yeah, it's amazing. That's really funny. Good times. It was really hot there too. Yeah. It was a year. It was, um, wait, more than a year, two years. Yeah, two years ago. Oh my God. But it was like two years ago, almost to the day ish. Cause I left on July 4th. I was like, fuck you America. So like, yeah,

00:52:07.180 --> 00:52:35.240
I'm sure you guys covered this already, but Ray, did you do drums on Great Brunswick Forest? Yeah. We're just getting to that part of the story now. No, no, go ahead. It was a good lead-in. Did you do it on Metathonia as well? Yep. Okay. Those would be sort of extreme metal drumming there, wouldn't it? I do, but I'm not like amazingly stoked on my performances on that album, although I do love that album, and hooray, go listen to it, but like,

00:52:35.400 --> 00:53:05.160
Medixonia is way better. And I've had a really good time with great friends with Forrest too. It's way better in terms of how I feel about my performance. Obviously how people feel about the music is totally up to them. It's one of the greatest albums ever. Oh. I mean. He is the resident. Well. Yeah. I'm a fanatic. I mean Joel's incredible. He's like a really good dude to stand also because he's just like a great human being. He's so humble. He's so intelligent.

00:53:05.400 --> 00:53:34.200
He's just like a grounded, creative individual. Yeah. I was lucky enough to stay with Joel a couple days last year. I went up there to do, we did a campfire interview around the release of Great Brunswick Forest. And he just has acoustic guitars sitting around the house. And you'll just be talking to him all of a sudden. He just picks it up and starts singing. And you're just like, God damn. George got serenaded.

00:53:34.220 --> 00:54:04.040
That was probably like the greatest musical like weekend ever. Right. Ray, Ray, did you ever see the movie Misery? I mean, I know enough about it. It's like embedded in the cultural lexicon. The implication here being that George would keep him. Are you going to do this to Joel? What? It took me a minute to catch on there while he was asking the question. No. Joel is perfectly safe. If anything, Joel is such like a mountain.

00:54:04.280 --> 00:54:06.380
man of nature that he would be the one

00:54:06.570 --> 00:54:06.680
like

00:54:08.160 --> 00:54:10.280
wilderness like playing and winning the most

00:54:10.380 --> 00:54:12.220
dangerous game like he's fine

00:54:12.400 --> 00:54:14.360
he'll handle it he took me to the

00:54:14.510 --> 00:54:15.400
actual spot

00:54:16.300 --> 00:54:18.280
the album cover he's like this is the

00:54:18.380 --> 00:54:19.600
spot right here and he showed me I was

00:54:19.640 --> 00:54:20.000
like oh yeah

00:54:21.260 --> 00:54:21.580
so cool

00:54:22.780 --> 00:54:22.840
yeah

00:54:24.300 --> 00:54:26.020
but so did Joel do our theme song

00:54:26.540 --> 00:54:28.000
yes and and

00:54:28.240 --> 00:54:30.040
I was gonna ask you about that because

00:54:30.300 --> 00:54:32.260
you apparently are a part of our theme

00:54:33.740 --> 00:54:34.180
song

00:54:34.180 --> 00:55:03.880
So how did that come about? I know he was... You're going to be here. Do you want to do this thing for the thing? And I was like, okay. And we did it. And you're like, I don't know who these guys are, but whatever. I was like, sure. Sounds fun. I wonder if you're slowly regretting that choice. Not fully, immediately. Immediately. Well, thank you for that. I think it's fair that I can say that I love the theme song because I was not a part of the show when the theme song came to be. So now, Ray, you can go back and be like, yeah.

00:55:04.200 --> 00:55:33.340
Apparently I sang on a Viagra commercial or Cialis or whatever. It's a bunch of old dudes. I'm not old. Collectively. If I may go way back, how did you get involved in the final incarnation of Woods of Vipre? That's a good question. And one that doesn't get asked very often. And a lot of times people will ascribe a lot more meaning to my time in that band than I feel I deserve or that is warranted or that is even appropriate.

00:55:34.200 --> 00:56:03.420
So, man, I wish the whole world was listening, you know? Let me make this really fucking clear. America and the world. David Gold was a person that gave me a cool opportunity. We did not know each other well at all prior to me getting that gig. He put out an open call for people to replace the Maddens in that band, and I was like a college student. I liked them enough.

00:56:03.760 --> 00:56:06.260
I liked Woods but I wasn't like oh my fucking god

00:56:06.730 --> 00:56:08.440
but I was trying to you know plan my next move

00:56:08.570 --> 00:56:10.740
I wanted to tour and I liked the music

00:56:10.910 --> 00:56:12.060
I thought I could handle it

00:56:12.880 --> 00:56:14.360
so you know I sent him an email

00:56:14.610 --> 00:56:16.380
I was like we have some mutual friends too

00:56:16.660 --> 00:56:17.820
like I think this would be cool

00:56:18.200 --> 00:56:19.840
here's some video of me playing some shit

00:56:20.350 --> 00:56:20.720
ta-da

00:56:21.360 --> 00:56:23.120
and he was like can you send a video of yourself

00:56:23.490 --> 00:56:24.740
playing natural technologies

00:56:25.080 --> 00:56:26.840
and I was like yeah I can

00:56:27.020 --> 00:56:29.520
so I did and he was like you got it

00:56:29.640 --> 00:56:30.440
and I was like sick

00:56:30.720 --> 00:56:33.160
so from then on you know we were like talking more

00:56:33.180 --> 00:57:01.980
We worked out some touring plans. I was never really put in touch with Joel. Not until actually David passed away, really. So he and I were talking a lot about who would play bass. He knew Brendan Hayter already. I think that one of Brendan's bands had played with Woods in Boston or somewhere around Boston when Woods had come through. So they already knew each other. Brendan and I met up because we were both in Massachusetts. I was going to college. He was living there.

00:57:02.720 --> 00:57:31.160
He's a great dude. We jammed a little bit. It was fun. So yeah, we were just like, you know, planning to go to Canada for rehearsals and then we were going to fly to Europe and we were going to do some touring, play an earache showcase, shit like that. I was on winter break. I was home in Fairfax when, you know, I found out that David passed away. I was the one that had to tell Brendan. I mean, I suppose I didn't have to, but I was the one who called him.

00:57:32.240 --> 00:58:01.200
From there on, I was like, what the fuck am I supposed to do now? I got in touch with Joel. I wanted to do some sort of a tribute thing. I heard that there was going to be maybe a show in Sault Ste. Marie where he was from. So Joel and I got together on that. We collaborated and put together a whole set. And then we met in Toronto to go to the album listening thing and then go to Sault Ste. Marie for that. But yeah, so as far as the whole Woods involvement goes,

00:58:03.440 --> 00:58:31.980
It was pretty fucking limited. Sometimes people put a whole lot of credit on that. And like, it's not up to me to like, police what everyone says, but I've seen so many interviews, so many things that are like, she used to play in woods. And I'm like, that is technically true. But like, you would not believe how many people are like, what was it like touring with David? Like, are you okay? Like all this shit. And I'm like,

00:58:32.920 --> 00:59:02.200
I appreciate the people like care at all but it's just like I don't really understand how the narrative got blown up to be so far away from what it actually was like I care about Austin Blatt and that involvement in that relationship so much more so meaningful and it's been part of my life for so many years now from start to finish I was involved with Woods for under a year and it was really you know painful to lose that opportunity and obviously far more painful to lose David but like

00:59:02.220 --> 00:59:32.180
It wasn't my band. I never got in a room with David Gold and played his music. It feels really fucking weird and you'll never, ever see me push the woods thing at all. My guess is that, and not that it's for me to guess, but when there's a death like that, it just gets mythologized so fast. And you had a variety of proximity, clearly, even if there was a distance there in geography and all that. So you're probably stuck with that for a long time.

00:59:32.240 --> 01:00:02.100
Yeah. Well, being a huge Woods and Thrasenblatt fan, I was aware of the limited involvement, but I was still curious how it came about. And then... It's weird. What is a college student in Boston doing joining a Canadian Doom Metal? And then how, presumably, that led to you playing with Joel and Thrasenblatt. Right, which was like the best thing.

01:00:04.700 --> 01:00:30.320
But yeah, that was a really, really amazing thing to come out of it. It was almost like an accident. We didn't even talk about it until we were on a short plane ride from Sault Ste. Marie to Ontario or whatever. Yeah, it was really cool. Not something that I expected to be able to do, and I'm grateful for it. It sucks that it's an opportunity that was born of something so shitty.

01:00:30.620 --> 01:00:56.520
And obviously I'll always wonder what it would have been like if I had gone to Canada and rehearsed and we had gone to Europe and if that band had continued, my cat is being really obnoxious. I'll always wonder that, but ultimately a lot of other people suffered a lot more than I did with how everything went down, so I just try to be pretty hands-off about the whole thing.

01:00:56.600 --> 01:01:26.560
You know, it's funny. Joel is, I feel like Joel approaches that similarly. I feel like when we talk to Joel, I mean, not entirely so. I mean, I think he has a little bit, he obviously had a little more time. But he, Joel was a little bit kind of hands off on his answer too, wasn't he? What'd you say, George? In what sense? Just that his same thing, like he, his immediate thing was like, you know, I really wasn't with him for a long time. And because we talked to him about it. Yeah. Yeah. Which I mean, it's just, that's interesting to me. And then, especially that you two then ended up doing

01:01:26.580 --> 01:01:27.020
things together.

01:01:28.360 --> 01:01:30.580
Well, I think it's just like, obviously, Joel and

01:01:30.900 --> 01:01:32.540
Dave had way more of a relationship

01:01:32.660 --> 01:01:34.660
than I did with him, but ultimately,

01:01:34.960 --> 01:01:36.720
like, Joel has so much music

01:01:36.920 --> 01:01:38.700
in him, and like, so many

01:01:38.880 --> 01:01:40.660
more things that he's doing that I think he just

01:01:40.880 --> 01:01:42.800
doesn't want to be nailed down to this one

01:01:43.020 --> 01:01:43.160
thing.

01:01:43.780 --> 01:01:43.880
Yeah.

01:01:44.240 --> 01:01:45.920
Joel is the Dave Grohl of

01:01:46.660 --> 01:01:48.300
Woods and E-Pray, and they say that not in a mean way.

01:01:50.660 --> 01:01:51.200
He's just,

01:01:53.320 --> 01:01:54.700
you know, Thrasenblatt is still

01:01:54.780 --> 01:01:55.560
like an active,

01:01:56.320 --> 01:02:26.300
really important creative outlet for him. That's his project. It gets bogged down constantly with needless or poorly researched comparisons. Sometimes our work even gets ascribed to being like a David Gold tribute project. And it's not fair because it makes you resent the memory of someone that has no control over the narrative posthumously. And yet it's like, it's something that I don't feel as strongly

01:02:26.340 --> 01:02:56.300
about because it doesn't affect me as much in my day-to-day as I'm pursuing Immortal Bird but it does affect Joel with Ross and Blatt and it is something that follows him around to a degree that's far more just smothering than what I've experienced and like it's no disrespect to David or any of the things that he he wrote or did or you know anything like that but it's just like Adora Vivos is a concept that Joel came up with that's on Woods 5 and it's like love the living

01:02:56.340 --> 01:03:25.460
while they're still alive. And yeah, I strongly believe that too. You know, you have to just keep moving. Not to be callous, but like every Thrasenblatt interview that I've seen Joel have to do is like woods, woods, woods, woods, and not about Joel's creative input. It's just all like Dave, Dave, Dave, Dave, Dave. And I, I think that it's just something that eventually people will have to just accept is part of the past.

01:03:25.540 --> 01:03:55.180
in terms of our narrative. And if they want to talk about Dave, they need to reach out to other people who are still closely connected to him. You know? I gotta believe that will change in time, though. I mean, I'm sure it will. Especially because, I mean, people do talk about Thrust and Blot and I've really... Like, even the Krang review on the last... On Medicthomia, it was just like... They were just like, this is ungodly. They were so kind to it. Oh, yeah. I mean, I've always been blown away by how kind and supportive most press and most people are in general.

01:03:55.580 --> 01:04:25.520
I think it's just such an earnest project like I think I can say that just because I don't write any of it I'm just lucky enough to play drums on it like it's just if you don't like it that's okay but like if you do there's just so much there and none of it is like pretentious or an actor a gimmick it's just like this honest talented creative man like channeling a lot of thoughts and just like singing and playing guitar and arranging things and like throwing tin whistles on things and

01:04:25.560 --> 01:04:28.840
It's just like, it's just good shit. I don't know.

01:04:29.180 --> 01:04:46.260
He's so... Better way to put that, but it's just like, it's good. And I think people just recognize that it's only existing like for people to listen to. It's not like to get awards or likes or attention or like whatever. It's just like, I don't know.

01:04:47.480 --> 01:04:48.220
Yeah, yeah, better.

01:04:48.280 --> 01:05:15.840
Yeah. Whenever he'll like send me a song or even just like when, you know, when Great Brunswick Forest came out and he'll be like, so what'd you think of this song? And I'll be like, oh, you know, it's good. And he's like, no, I mean, like, how did it make you feel? You know, he wants to know like really deep stuff about how this stuff is experienced. And I always feel inadequate trying to answer him. I'm like, I'm not smart enough.

01:05:18.280 --> 01:05:48.220
Yeah, he asks such good questions and he's so articulate. But he's also so humble. Like, you hit him with, like, a compliment that you really mean, but it's just, you know, it's just a compliment, like a short compliment. And he'll be like, thank you so much. Like, that means, like, he's Canadians, man. I know. Oak Ash and Thorne, his folk project, just released a new song the other day. And I bought it as soon as it came up. And, like, ten minutes later, he's,

01:05:48.260 --> 01:06:18.200
like emailing me thanking me because I bought it. I'm like, come on, dude. It's just a fucking song. He's an angel. He and I both do handwritten notes for every order. Like I do for Immortal Bird. He does them for Thross and Blatt. It's just so nice. And he gets way more orders than we do. So like, and since he's from Canada, and he sells a lot of shit internationally, he gets like way more people like message I have, I can see the Facebook shit too. Like, whoo, people get really fucking upset when they don't get their shit like immediately. And he's just like, so Canadian.

01:06:18.260 --> 01:06:19.740
about the whole goddamn thing.

01:06:20.760 --> 01:06:24.960
I can vouch for that because I've gotten a note from you, Ray, when I got a patch or a shirt or something.

01:06:25.240 --> 01:06:25.920
Hey, I'm fine.

01:06:25.980 --> 01:06:26.600
Yeah, thank you.

01:06:26.960 --> 01:06:27.340
Thank you very much.

01:06:27.560 --> 01:06:28.500
I have one, too.

01:06:28.680 --> 01:06:29.260
I've gotten a note.

01:06:29.540 --> 01:06:30.120
Come for me.

01:06:30.680 --> 01:06:31.040
Wait.

01:06:32.440 --> 01:06:35.020
I think I got something on cat stationery.

01:06:35.500 --> 01:06:35.700
Yep.

01:06:36.080 --> 01:06:36.440
Yeah.

01:06:37.080 --> 01:06:38.340
That wasn't cat stationery.

01:06:38.390 --> 01:06:41.860
That was stationery that I hand put cat stickers on.

01:06:42.020 --> 01:06:43.060
Yeah, maybe that was it.

01:06:43.200 --> 01:06:43.360
Yes.

01:06:43.630 --> 01:06:43.720
Yes.

01:06:44.120 --> 01:06:45.140
John, you got that, too, right?

01:06:45.500 --> 01:07:15.440
Well, I got the stationery, but I didn't get the cat sticker. Oh, that's right. I got the cat. I only got the stickers on this sheet, but this is what people are getting right now. So, yeah, if you remember, Will, I had to take a picture of what Ray sent me, and I had to put my cat in the picture and post it online. And then when I saw you, you guys played at, God, I can't remember, it was this real small place in Baltimore, and I came up to him and I said, I'm the guy who didn't get the cat sticker.

01:07:15.500 --> 01:07:45.460
sticker. He looked at me like, who the hell are you? People don't get cat stickers and I'm like, oh no. And I just panicked. You should just bring cat stickers to shows in case somebody didn't get one. Just stick it on them. Always be prepared. Some extra room in our budget. I'm just going to make joke stickers with just like a picture of my cat and like our logo somewhere on it. People have started approaching me and showing me pictures of their cats and stuff because

01:07:45.500 --> 01:08:12.100
I'm pretty vocally obsessed with my cats on social media and whatever. But on this last tour especially, people came up to me at almost every show and were like, can I show you my cats? Or like, will you follow my cat on Instagram? Or like, how are your cats? And it's way better than people being like, who's your boyfriend? Or like, I have one Instagram story. Or like, blah, blah, blah. I'm just like, I only want to talk about my cats, really.

01:08:12.180 --> 01:08:42.120
Well, I got to tell you, it's pretty demoralizing. My sister has an Instagram cat account that because they've got these crazy Norwegian cat and some other cats and they get so much more traffic than this podcast. Fucking cats. Cats rule the Internet. Haven't you ever seen cats on tap? That Instagram thing. It's absolutely hilarious. It's pictures of cats with bears and just like hundreds and hundreds of hits on every picture. It's great.

01:08:43.100 --> 01:09:11.420
Yeah, my cats have an Instagram, but they don't really use it. I mean, I don't really use it. I don't know. Maybe we need to start a Metalheads podcast cat Instagram thing. How many of us have cats? Wait, wait, wait. Did you hear what she just said? It was really good. Thank you for listening. It was, yeah. Metalheads podcats. Oh! How did you guys not do that?

01:09:12.180 --> 01:09:41.460
We are totally doing this. Yeah. Who does? I have a cat. Mark, do you have a cat? Yeah. Switch. Yeah. Absolutely. I have a... We do not have a cat, but we have several neighborhood cats that my children and I take care of quite frequently, so I can easily take pictures of cats. You could join the party. I mean, my cat wins for cuteness, by the way. Oh, I don't know about that one. Oh, boy. I'll go get her. I'll go get her. This is where this is.

01:09:42.200 --> 01:10:10.620
I got a full-blooded Siberian. Bring out your cats. Let's have a cat off. Let's do the catwalk. On the catwalk. Oh, dear. Not that anybody can see them or anything, but... Yeah, like, my cats are beautiful. They're way more beautiful than whatever cat this dude... Oh, Jay's actually running. Let's see. Oh, look. Siamese. That's pretty. It's not as pretty. I'm getting my cat. Hold on. It's like, what? Jesus. That's a pretty cat.

01:10:12.200 --> 01:10:16.460
I'm going to go get it.

01:10:18.120 --> 01:10:20.280
I'll be back here in five minutes.

01:10:22.840 --> 01:10:23.400
Excuse me.

01:10:23.640 --> 01:10:23.980
That's Sugar.

01:10:24.560 --> 01:10:27.800
She, which by the way, she, uh, she's like a dog.

01:10:27.900 --> 01:10:28.480
She follows you around.

01:10:28.600 --> 01:10:30.460
So as soon as I picked her out, she was like, we're going somewhere.

01:10:30.660 --> 01:10:31.280
This is awesome.

01:10:32.880 --> 01:10:33.780
Got another kitty.

01:10:33.960 --> 01:10:34.880
That's a big kitty.

01:10:35.420 --> 01:10:35.980
Oh no.

01:10:36.760 --> 01:10:36.920
Okay.

01:10:37.040 --> 01:10:37.580
He's pretty cute.

01:10:37.860 --> 01:10:38.620
Or she is the case.

01:10:38.790 --> 01:10:38.900
Maybe.

01:10:40.240 --> 01:10:40.440
Okay.

01:10:40.760 --> 01:11:10.280
Maybe that cat is objectively prettier than the cat. This is Zoso. Nice. That is the biggest cat ever. All my life. What kind of is it like a Maine Coon or something? He's full-blooded Siberian. That's not real. That's not even a real thing. Here's his face. He looks mellow too. Just making up cats. He's so sweet. He likes it. Wait, I didn't see your cat, right? Can you see if it's accessible?

01:11:12.480 --> 01:11:13.280
No worries.

01:11:14.260 --> 01:11:17.100
Is that this is at this point everyone turned the podcast off?

01:11:17.520 --> 01:11:17.720
They're like

01:11:18.780 --> 01:11:22.560
There'll be some editing here, but I you know what I will show off my cat anytime I get the chance

01:11:22.660 --> 01:11:26.780
There is absolutely no way I can get my cat she would just run away from me in a second

01:11:27.020 --> 01:11:28.260
Nice. What's her name or her name?

01:11:30.440 --> 01:11:31.200
Winnie Joan

01:11:33.420 --> 01:11:37.800
Winnie Jo that's a good one. So we got Winnie Jo Zo So Sugar. What's your cat's name John?

01:11:38.360 --> 01:11:38.640
Violet

01:11:39.340 --> 01:11:40.720
Violet and John

01:11:40.720 --> 01:12:09.480
I had recently transitioned to a new cat not too long ago. Over a year ago. It was over a year ago now. Yeah. And I forgot what the long lost name was. He was Mr. Kitty or Tristan. And had been around 400 years. Jen had him for seven or eight years. And he was already seven or eight when she got him. Oh, no shit. I had a cat that lived to be 21 years old. Our cats are rescues.

01:12:10.740 --> 01:12:12.480
We're a metal pod cats

01:12:13.970 --> 01:12:15.180
Oh Ray, your cat is gorgeous

01:12:15.900 --> 01:12:16.340
Thank you

01:12:16.350 --> 01:12:17.180
So is yours, Jay

01:12:17.920 --> 01:12:18.680
Yeah, you too, buddy

01:12:18.780 --> 01:12:20.140
We're gonna have to get together and have a cat party

01:12:21.580 --> 01:12:22.420
Yeah, we're buds

01:12:22.880 --> 01:12:25.180
I had to pet my cat for a couple of minutes

01:12:25.660 --> 01:12:27.660
Hey, John, where's Violet?

01:12:28.460 --> 01:12:29.740
There's no way she's coming on

01:12:30.160 --> 01:12:31.480
I couldn't get her if I tried right now

01:12:31.480 --> 01:12:32.020
She's a diva

01:12:34.040 --> 01:12:35.560
No, John, I'm talking about your cat

01:12:40.340 --> 01:12:40.700
Anyway

01:12:43.160 --> 01:13:10.480
I had another Woods Joel question, which was the Heart of Gold tribute album. You and Joel did Silver, and you sang. Oh, yeah. You don't sound so thrilled about that. Look, I have a pretty decent singing voice. I actually am entrusted to teach voice to kids.

01:13:10.700 --> 01:13:39.900
I've been taught how to sing by people that know how, but the recording process for that song was a fucking joke, and I also just objectively didn't perform to the best of my ability. I would have made a million different choices now. I also would have, like, accompanied myself. Not that it wasn't cool that Joel played piano, but we could have fleshed out that arrangement a lot more. I'm fully capable of playing piano like that, and I think if I'd accompanied myself, the timing would have been more organic.

01:13:41.260 --> 01:14:10.680
I have a lot of qualms with it, obviously, but ultimately it is what it is and I certainly don't hate it enough to be like, don't listen to it! But I don't think it's indicative of my singing ability or what Joel and I are capable of together, but it is something and it was meaningful and that song means a lot to me, so I'm glad that I did it. I wish I could have done it better justice, but I think that down the road if I really, really, really, really feel like I need to redeem myself, there's probably a way I can

01:14:10.720 --> 01:14:40.680
make that happen you know well i really liked it thank you i really appreciate that it just seems like it was so so so long ago so to to piggyback off of that are we ever going to hear any clean vocals on an immortal bird album or does that just not go you know i used to be like right answer is no there's a little tiny bit on the accrasia ep uh then there's nothing like that

01:14:45.760 --> 01:15:10.680
I don't want to do anything that I can't pull off well in a live setting and I do think that I abuse my voice enough when I'm doing like the guttural shit that maybe clean singing would be a bit of a strain to put it healthy but I don't want that to come off as the only reason why if it made sense to do and I felt really strongly maybe I would put in like a sunk

01:15:10.780 --> 01:15:40.680
Passage or something. Over the last year or so with teaching voice, I also just feel like I have a better command and understanding of my voice as an instrument, too. I feel better about it than I did when I started the band. So maybe. Never say never. I'm not really sure, but definitely maybe. Or maybe it would be more appropriate on a Thrasenblatt album. Maybe. I would be down for that, too. The only thing is, is Joel's future wife. Nikki. Yeah, she has a phenomenal

01:16:10.700 --> 01:16:37.700
Some country singers like Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt are amazing singers, but they are the most amazing backup singers. That takes a real skill. I think that I'm actually much better suited for that kind of thing. I love coming up with harmonies, like non-traditional weird ones, cool ones, kind of off the beaten path kind of shit, but also traditional ones. I just love harmonizing. I'm a big fan of that shit.

01:16:40.700 --> 01:17:10.580
What was the name of the tribute? George, it was Heart of Gold. Which made me think of the Neil Young thing. And he always had these amazing backup singers that were famous singers. That's who I just mentioned, I think. And you're just like, this is the best backup singer I've ever heard in my life. And you're like, oh, of course. I want to ask a question real quick. I've been meaning to ask, which is your last name? Where does that come from? Is it the background on that? Amity? Yeah, I mean, I like country. What country does that come from? I mean, it's Hebrew.

01:17:10.720 --> 01:17:12.920
But I'm just like an American Jew

01:17:13.580 --> 01:17:15.000
kid of American Jews

01:17:15.540 --> 01:17:16.600
like pretty typical

01:17:17.280 --> 01:17:17.540
Gotcha

01:17:18.280 --> 01:17:19.340
I couldn't for the life of me

01:17:19.440 --> 01:17:20.860
that's not a name I've heard

01:17:21.460 --> 01:17:23.800
I think Amitai means something in Hebrew

01:17:24.080 --> 01:17:25.980
like truth or some other shit

01:17:26.120 --> 01:17:26.660
You got it

01:17:26.800 --> 01:17:27.340
I looked it up

01:17:27.340 --> 01:17:27.900
it means truth

01:17:29.240 --> 01:17:30.440
Jay's always looking shit up

01:17:31.560 --> 01:17:31.960
But yeah

01:17:32.020 --> 01:17:32.940
I don't really have like

01:17:32.980 --> 01:17:34.060
a particular connection

01:17:34.580 --> 01:17:35.500
to my last name

01:17:35.680 --> 01:17:36.880
I wish I could change it

01:17:37.020 --> 01:17:38.180
but it rhymes with Ray

01:17:38.520 --> 01:17:39.780
so we're stuck with it

01:17:43.240 --> 01:18:09.360
All right. Does anybody else have any other questions before we move on? I had a quick question. We were talking about you singing, Ray. I know you're a music teacher and you teach voice. Is there anything you have to do like vocal exercises or practice to keep your voice because you sing all those harsh vocals and Immortal Burt? Yeah. I mean, it depends on whether or not. I mean, there's definitely stuff that I should do every day that sometimes I don't.

01:18:09.380 --> 01:18:39.320
But I am aware of it. Like, I really do have to warm up my voice properly. That can go, that can take anywhere from like 10 minutes to like a half hour depending on how I'm feeling. I have to like stay hydrated and like make sure I'm getting enough sleep, like make sure that like the air conditioning isn't cranked if we're in a motel, make sure like, you know, all this other shit. But yeah, you know, I do my vocal warm ups. I am trying to take better care of my instrument. I blew out my voice for the first time ever on this last tour that we did and that was scary.

01:18:39.380 --> 01:19:09.360
Luckily, we had a day off, but I needed that day off or I would have been fucked. And that was really scary because that has never happened. So just trying to take better care of my voice, for sure, overall. I don't really understand how people can go smoke two packs a day and drink a ton of whiskey and not ever drink water and just yell without thinking about what their diaphragm is, but there are people that can do it. I can't. I've never been able to get away with doing things without using

01:19:09.380 --> 01:19:38.420
Like, I have stress injuries from drumming like when I was a teenager and just like not doing it right. Like, I just can't get away with it. Like, my body just like decides immediately that it's a bad idea and they're like, tendinitis! So, yeah, I have to be really careful with my voice, especially now. But it's not that hard. You know, you have to just make sure you're doing your warm-ups, make sure you're breathing correctly, make sure you're not straining too hard. Try to have a good mix in your monitor so that you can hear yourself.

01:19:38.600 --> 01:20:08.520
A lot of people don't like to hear themselves when they're doing gutturals. I really need to be able to. Like, I just need to be able to. You know, I think that proof of the guy, the two packs and the whiskey and all that, there's the motorhead is living proof that you may be able to pull it off without too many backup practices, but 70 years is your cutoff. You don't really use it all up. That's it with all that extra. Cause I mean, all three of those guys died by 70, didn't they? I think. Yeah, but that's like a lot. That's like a really long time to live. To do that. Yeah. Live like that.

01:20:08.620 --> 01:20:36.120
I wouldn't mind living like that for that long. But I'm allergic to alcohol as of like 2017-ish. So yeah. I get really sick. So I have to do other stuff. Really? That's a hard. Wow. All alcohol, Ray? Yeah, pretty much. I haven't done a test of every single possible kind. But it does seem to be like every single possible kind. Oh man, that's hard.

01:20:38.620 --> 01:20:39.540
ever in this podcast.

01:20:41.140 --> 01:20:43.060
We can't do the podcast without beer.

01:20:45.340 --> 01:20:48.840
It's like metal, beer, and cats is what we're all about, apparently.

01:20:49.500 --> 01:20:51.800
Pretty much powered by all those things, yes.

01:20:53.020 --> 01:20:53.280
All right.

01:20:53.430 --> 01:20:54.700
Does anybody else have any other questions?

01:20:56.240 --> 01:20:57.920
Can I ask, are those croquet mallets I see?

01:20:58.680 --> 01:20:59.180
Are they what?

01:20:59.760 --> 01:21:00.120
Croquet.

01:21:01.180 --> 01:21:01.260
Yeah.

01:21:02.440 --> 01:21:05.500
Yeah, they were left here by the person that lived here before me.

01:21:05.560 --> 01:21:35.460
She also left a taxidermy fox that's in like an attack position. It's pretty haunting, but it's in another room, so you just have to believe me. God, what do you think she did for a living? Right. Fox, croquet mallets. She did all sorts of shit for a living, but she also like had a little bit of an honesty problem, so it's hard for me to like distinguish what she actually did versus what she said she actually did. Fascinating, fascinating character in my life, but she left her croquet mallets. I don't know what to do with it.

01:21:35.560 --> 01:21:36.740
All right.

01:21:37.560 --> 01:21:38.200
That's all right.

01:21:38.600 --> 01:21:38.860
Okay.

01:21:39.400 --> 01:21:40.600
Let's move on to the news.

01:21:53.580 --> 01:21:55.400
First news item kind of sucks.

01:21:56.580 --> 01:22:00.200
It was announced this week that Dave Mustaine has throat cancer.

01:22:01.200 --> 01:22:30.500
But it sounds like it's I mean, not that cancer is not a big deal, but they said there's like a 90% chance of recovery from this. So hopefully he'll make a full recovery and and all will be well. Yeah. Yeah. Throat cancer is scary for singers. I feel like that's the understatement of the century. Yeah. But he seems to be taking it in stride. I feel like no one really treated it like a death sentence when the news came out. So I'm not like insanely upset.

01:22:30.740 --> 01:23:00.360
But that's not to say it's not very serious. It definitely is. But for some reason, it just doesn't seem quite as dire as maybe it could have. Yeah. I mean, like Bruce Dickinson had something similar, I guess. I mean, I think that was like a tongue thing, though, but it's related, I think. That's horrifying. Next. Next, yes. Moving on. Sabaton released a video for the new song The Red Baron from their new album,

01:23:00.400 --> 01:23:30.360
The Great War, huh? That's a weird name title for them. Yeah, when have they ever written about war? I don't know much about that band. I was just like, they're right about history and war and shit. You know everything about that band. You got it. That's really all you need to know. That's all you need to know. I mean, I love World War I and World War II stories, but I

01:23:30.400 --> 01:24:00.060
I wasn't a fan of theirs in general, Marcus. I don't think so. It's too much chorus. I think there was a keytar in the background of this one, which I don't like. Yeah, they're pretty chorus-y. I think the issue with the song was just like, I don't know, the guitar solo, I was like, make up for the song in the solo, and I was like, ah, I was like, fine. I was like, oh, okay. But I like fun music, and it's like edutainment. I feel like they're a kid band trying to teach kids.

01:24:00.400 --> 01:24:29.660
about historical events in an engaging way. They're not failing at that, but like Sabaton is like a huge fan. People are obsessed with that fan. They don't need me to like them. Right. But that does make them sound very much like Schoolhouse Rock. There's nothing wrong with Schoolhouse Rock. No. It made me want to read stories about World War I, so I picked up a graphic novel that I love. I read, god, what was it called? I was like,

01:24:29.740 --> 01:24:57.600
I can't think of it. I wrote this long-ass book about World War I. It was crazy. All right, so this next one, ex-overkill guitarist Bobby Gustafson has a new band wonderfully titled Satan's Taint. The album is called Desecration Ritual. It is out August 2nd, and you can hear the song Desecration on SoundCloud. Did anybody else listen to this? I did. Sound a little bit like Slayer?

01:24:58.040 --> 01:25:27.800
There was not much that I enjoyed, but I wasn't pissed about it. And that's my review. I mostly put it on here because it's called Satan's Taint. And I wanted to say Satan's Taint. I think they get points for that name. Or if it was just my speaker. Is it? Did you listen? Is the drum production annoying? Mostly everything about it was annoying. But the only good thing I could say,

01:25:27.820 --> 01:25:57.540
And it wasn't necessarily a good thing, but it reminded me of Slayer. Like a bad Slayer. That's still a good thing. I feel like I would take that. Yeah. George, do you hate Slayer? I know. That's like a slight on Slayer. No, no. It's like a bad Slayer. Like if Slayer wasn't good, this is what it would sound like. It's like a bad Steel Panther or something. To me, I listen to Steel Panthers. So you're saying that even though it's not,

01:25:57.720 --> 01:26:27.600
It was like a bad rock and roll. You know what it reminded me of? I'll tell you exactly what it reminded me of. When Jason Newstead came out with his new album, I don't even remember what it was called. Newstead, I think. Yeah, Newstead? Yeah, maybe. But it was terrible. And this is terrible. Let's just say, it's terrible. Yes, it is. It's terrible. I was like, are we plugging this? I felt like I didn't like it. No, no, no. I just wanted to say Satan's Taint. We're just talking about news.

01:26:27.720 --> 01:26:54.020
in general. We plug nothing. Except the Roussinblot. Fair enough. I'm actually shocked that name wasn't taken. I have a book. My friend the Captain gave me this book called All Known Metal Bands. You have a friend named the Captain? Yeah, let's gloss over there. My friend the Captain. It was my friend the Captain. I've known him for like 20 years. Captain, my Captain. All right, let's move on.

01:26:58.000 --> 01:27:26.300
and Amoebix are releasing their third album, Messengers of Deception, on August 9th. I know some of you guys kind of like them. I'm not a big fan. Ray, I will translate for you. It's members of Voivod. I love Voivod more than most bands. I love them so much. I like Amoebix a lot. And Tau Cross is fine. I missed them the last time they came through Chicago, and I would see them if they come through again.

01:27:27.700 --> 01:27:55.300
mostly just in it because of the associated projects. I'll just admit it. They can't all be like, not every project can be like the best fucking thing ever. We all liked the first one and then us got excited about the second one, if I remember right. We didn't even talk about it much. I didn't like this song. It was more punk than I expected, but that drum beat was the same the whole song. It just didn't change. I didn't like that part.

01:28:01.180 --> 01:28:27.320
Sacred Reich released a video for the title track of their upcoming new album Awakening, which is out on August 23rd. And that's like their first album in like a million years or something. You know, they were sort of, well, first of all, I think Will agreed the song was pretty kick-ass. I liked it. Will seems to like it. He loves it. You know, not that I'm a big fan, but the guy, I think the guy who left Machine Head went back to Sacred Reich.

01:28:27.400 --> 01:28:56.220
That's where he's from, apparently. No, not Phil, the other dude. I'll look it up. Matt, speaking of Phil's, wasn't the main guy from Sacred Rag, Phil, wasn't he at Valken doing a spoken word thing? Yeah, we walked in for a while. Yeah, I was like, I didn't talk about that guy. Anyway. Yeah, so that's coming out. That should be cool. Am I the only massive Sacred Rag?

01:28:59.900 --> 01:29:27.360
I can't sign on to massive but I'm a fan I like I dig that song I'm looking for like I grew up on like surf Nicaraguan ignorance and all of you do we not hear the same breakdown at the end that like fucking stupid ass paid by numbers breakdown one-on-one this is good this is good we need a foil it lasted for my whole life like that's some sucks ass and the

01:29:27.400 --> 01:29:56.980
The Breakdown is the worst part. I fucking hate it. And like, fuck them. But not really. Because they're a cool band. I like a lot of their stuff. I've seen them. I have a Sacred Rite t-shirt. Like, they're cool as hell. And like, that's why I'm so mad that they put out like a meh song and then the Breakdown at the end was like so bad to me that I'm like annoyed. I might be annoyed. Are you talking about the new song, The Awakening? Yeah. Don't cry well. I feel like we need a foil.

01:30:10.659 --> 01:30:26.560
I thought it was only okay too but I didn't want to hurt Will. I'm sorry. More strongly than I felt about the Taint song and more than the Taint song, more than the Sabaton song,

01:30:26.980 --> 01:30:56.900
All that shit was like fine and I just was so annoyed by the end of that Sacred Brick tune because I know they can do better and I was just so irritated with it. You're like, what are these guys making me listen to all this shit for? Well, I will feel a little better because up until just a few minutes ago, Ray thought we were kind of plugging everything and now that she was like, oh, you're going to let me go. She's been set free. I'm like, I don't listen bad. I don't want to fucking burn these shit. Well, Jane, now I know why at the very beginning of the podcast, she's like,

01:30:57.000 --> 01:31:26.820
Is there anything I shouldn't do? I'm in my position pretty well. And this is another example of like, who fucking gives a shit what I think. That band is huge. They will remain huge and play to thousands and thousands of people and move tons of records and be ballers, regardless of what I think of this breakdown and this fucking song. Like, it's going to be okay for everyone, I feel like. Can I talk about Aquaman now? Yeah, please do. So, Jason,

01:31:26.980 --> 01:31:56.340
Jason Momoa says it was a childhood dream come true to meet Slayer and Anthrax backstage in Budapest recently. And I just wanted to say how much I love Jason Momoa because he's Aquaman, who was awesome. He's Conan, who was... Where is he, Conan? And called Drago. And he's so metal. I mean, come on. So that's all. Where is he, Conan? He did a Conan movie. He did a remake.

01:32:00.440 --> 01:32:03.260
It's actually called Conan, so you could just google that

01:32:03.380 --> 01:32:06.520
I mean, you know, it's like I mean, I don't know what it's cooking or something something

01:32:07.360 --> 01:32:09.760
But yeah, I but I agree with George. I mean a while

01:32:09.940 --> 01:32:10.660
He mentioned

01:32:13.320 --> 01:32:17.620
He mentioned he builds his characters off of metal songs and he said Aquaman was inspired by tool

01:32:18.600 --> 01:32:19.000
sabbath

01:32:20.020 --> 01:32:22.140
Metallica's kill them all I don't see it in Aquaman

01:32:22.860 --> 01:32:25.300
Yeah, but it's great. He keeps mentioning metal

01:32:25.300 --> 01:32:55.280
I like bro-y ass like entry-level like kind of good metal like oh Jason like we don't have like any of the same things but I feel like this was all George this was all just a chance for George to say bro crush which I love he is a bad dude I want to hang out with this guy yeah he was uh I I didn't know he was in all this other stuff but I I watched this I guess it was Netflix or Amazon whatever it was um Frontier he's like one of the main characters in this

01:32:55.280 --> 01:33:22.860
that show Frontier, which is pretty good. What is it? What's it about? It's about the French-Canadian fur trade. It's about the Canadian fur trade, and it's all about the different British companies, the French companies, all vying for power and territory in the fur trade in the Great White North. I think we should get him on this podcast with Ray, so she can challenge his metal cred. Well, actually, hey, he might love to do a metal podcast. He might.

01:33:25.280 --> 01:33:55.040
Yeah, I request an audience with Jason Momoa. Only to speak of the most classy metal stuff that I can do. I don't even know. Is he handsome? I haven't. I don't. I wouldn't mind looking like him. These are jokes. I'm obsessed with him. He was the background on my computer when I was in high school. I'm in it to win it. I'll play the long game.

01:33:55.280 --> 01:34:25.080
Maybe I started a band so that eventually we would get to this moment. You just took your next big step towards that moment. I have time. I mean, Lisa Bonet is older than I am. By the time I'm her age, maybe this band will be more successful. Maybe she'll fall into a wood chipper and become less of a goddess. A lot of things would have to happen, but it is possible as we are both two organic organisms living on the same planet.

01:34:25.320 --> 01:34:49.780
at the same time. So you're saying there's a chance. I might have a chance. I'm moving a white. We all have a chance with Jason. All of us. Yes. Well, if us on the podcast, George has the biggest chance. True. Why? Or maybe the smallest chance. I don't know. Hey, who told you? Where the hell were we? Yeah, anyway, let's move on to the new releases.

01:34:59.480 --> 01:35:25.260
First one is the new Beheaded album, Only Death Can Save You. This is the sixth album from a death metal band from Malta. If anybody on here would like it, I'm guessing it would be Will. Did you listen to that at all? I did, and I really, really liked the last one, and this one was just sort of super... Processed....meh. It is. I tried to like it, and I don't like it either. Yeah, I really...

01:35:25.280 --> 01:35:27.100
There's some recording of me somewhere

01:35:27.840 --> 01:35:29.240
in the history of this podcast saying

01:35:29.330 --> 01:35:31.240
I really liked The Last Beheaded probably

01:35:31.350 --> 01:35:33.300
two or three years ago. And I listened

01:35:33.330 --> 01:35:35.240
to this one and it didn't even sound like the same band to me.

01:35:35.460 --> 01:35:37.760
It just wasn't there.

01:35:38.360 --> 01:35:40.640
Yeah, I thought I was going to like it and I was like,

01:35:41.580 --> 01:35:42.620
not as much as I thought I would.

01:35:43.440 --> 01:35:45.440
The vocal mix was weird on it, I thought.

01:35:45.800 --> 01:35:47.500
Me too. And I also don't like his voice.

01:35:47.700 --> 01:35:49.440
It's almost like they have

01:35:49.650 --> 01:35:51.220
the kind of cool death metal-y riffs and then

01:35:51.700 --> 01:35:53.480
there's just this weird Rob Zombie injection

01:35:53.610 --> 01:35:55.180
into the whole thing that I can't fucking take.

01:35:55.640 --> 01:36:25.000
And so I tried to like it kind of a little bit because when I heard listen to the samples like this is pretty cool. It's not I don't like it. So yeah, no, I was totally wrong. So what about enthroned cold black suns? It's their 11th album black metal band and I know Jay likes this one. I do. I'm not sure how many people like that Rotting Christ one, but this is Rotting Christ with a little more black metal going on it, but they've got some of what's going on with the new Rotting Christ stuff. It's good. I dig it.

01:36:25.260 --> 01:36:55.220
It's probably going to be on my list. By the way, I just looked up Rotting Christ on Angry Metal Guy and they gave it like a 1.5. Did you guys see that? No. I remember seeing that one. 1.5? Yeah. Out of what? That's harsh. Out of 5. It was like bad. They rated it as like, this is bad. Don't listen to it. The review was just as if they were reviewing a Korn album or something. I don't know why people review and they're so mad, but I guess that is part of Angry Metal Guy.

01:36:58.040 --> 01:37:24.340
I do get how maybe that's part of the brand. I can't tell. But like, I don't know. I got in trouble when I used to write for being too nice. Everyone was like, sounds like a fucking press release. Why don't you give out so many nines? Blah, blah, blah. And it's like, I review things that I feel passionately about. And if I fucking hate it, put so much effort into like completely shitting on someone's fucking music, unless it's that breakdown at the end of that one.

01:37:25.240 --> 01:37:54.780
You're making up for it now, Ray. Yeah. That's why... She called herself... I'm not in the game. I don't write reviews anymore. I've gotten people asking me to write them for various publications ever since I stopped. And I just like... It's not my place anymore. I feel so fucking weird writing reviews, positive or negative, because metal's just too small and nepotism is too fucking real. And even if you're writing from a really pure place of just objectivity,

01:37:55.240 --> 01:38:24.160
It's not going to come off that way. People are going to be like, they met in 2012 at a show. Here's a picture. They got tagged in on Facebook. Everybody get mad. And it's like, holy shit. I'm the same way because I used to do reviews and interviews with comics. I still do interviews with the comic book creators, but I don't review comics anymore because they're all my peers now. And I know how hard it is for people to work on stuff. I don't need to shit on everything or just get in trouble for doing that. Yeah, I didn't like when I did reviews.

01:38:25.240 --> 01:38:55.220
was like, you know, there's so much good metal out there that's not getting covered. I'm not going to waste my time writing about shit that I don't like. You know, so. Use the tiny, tiny platform that you may have to like push someone else like a teeny bit further up instead of being like, I'm going to like make sure that my audience knows how much I fucking hate this band. It's just like, what are we all in it for? Because it's certainly not for money. So like, why are we like trying to be so shitty to each other for not even

01:38:55.260 --> 01:38:56.300
Like making money.

01:38:56.520 --> 01:38:57.400
Yeah.

01:38:58.360 --> 01:39:24.900
We have a real long game. Wait, wait, wait. Are you not making money? Because here on the podcast, we're like millionaires. Every week I get this ridiculously check for like $500,000. We're sitting here talking bullshit every now and again. Yeah. Do you not have that? No, no. We got like an $800,000 advance for the new record, but we spent most of it already. On the cover art. And the cover art. Yeah.

01:39:28.380 --> 01:39:58.300
$6,000 stipend for each of us. We're hoping to kind of level up a bit next time and not be so DIY. I wonder if we've met. Have we met Dave? I mean, does he come when they go to Decimal and stuff? Sometimes. He didn't go this year. I think he went last year, maybe. Okay. Because I do. We all love 20 bucks, Ben. I'd like to meet him and just say hi and stuff. You should get him on the cast. We should have him on the cast. You should go to the next Migration Fest in 2020. He'll probably be very stressed out.

01:39:58.360 --> 01:39:59.880
But he's extremely nice

01:40:00.460 --> 01:40:00.840
Perfect

01:40:01.160 --> 01:40:03.040
We are experts at calming people down

01:40:03.120 --> 01:40:04.160
Pittsburgh is not that far

01:40:04.610 --> 01:40:04.820
Is it

01:40:06.440 --> 01:40:07.380
I think so

01:40:07.560 --> 01:40:08.640
I mean I don't know right

01:40:08.820 --> 01:40:09.760
Like I have no idea

01:40:09.810 --> 01:40:10.760
I know it's migrating

01:40:11.200 --> 01:40:12.220
But last year was in Pittsburgh

01:40:12.780 --> 01:40:13.820
I wanted to go to that

01:40:14.300 --> 01:40:15.800
Maybe this time we'll be in Pittsburgh

01:40:16.100 --> 01:40:16.800
I'm not sure

01:40:16.910 --> 01:40:17.660
I think so

01:40:17.940 --> 01:40:18.940
I think so

01:40:19.040 --> 01:40:20.100
I think that's like a common

01:40:21.160 --> 01:40:22.040
Commonly discussed

01:40:22.880 --> 01:40:23.260
Thing

01:40:23.670 --> 01:40:23.780
Yeah

01:40:24.080 --> 01:40:25.480
Being on 20 bucks spin

01:40:25.560 --> 01:40:26.320
Will you be playing it?

01:40:26.860 --> 01:40:56.320
I don't know anything about that. I would hope so. But I don't know. Maybe. Maybe Migration Fest come to D.C. Just saying. I feel like we should all make a blood pack to go. Like right here. We should all go. It was such a fun thing to go to last year. And like, yeah, it was a great event. We had such a good time. There was no bad time slot. That's always nice. Will they go back and swoop up your old albums for a 20-buck spin? Or will they stay where they live now? I don't think so.

01:40:56.400 --> 01:41:26.340
That's not part of our deal. I'm open to talking about it. I think he's going to stock some of the Empress Abscess vinyl we have in their distro. But as far as the Masters and stuff, that's all mine right now. And I'm really not feeling super pushed to do anything like that. But yeah, we'll see how this record does because we're already writing new stuff and hopefully Dave will want to put it out. He is under no obligation to do so, but I don't really think this album is going to do so much.

01:41:26.880 --> 01:41:54.200
So, so fucking horribly that he won't put out the next one, but you never know. Challenge accepted. Yeah. It's a good record. Yeah, no, it's great. I'm like, maybe it's not so bad that it could, like, destroy us, but you never know which way the wind's gonna blow. Well, it's your best album, for sure. I love it. Yeah, it is. So, next new release is the new Hate album,

01:41:56.380 --> 01:42:26.100
of Velez. I don't know how to say it. As I've mentioned, I can't pronounce anything, so it doesn't fucking matter. That sounded pretty good, George. Thank you. Thank you. But without the question mark. Yeah. So it's also their Polish Black Death Band. This is also their 11th album. And I like these guys. I do. As Will was saying, it's like Behemoth without the children singing. Oh, God. That's fucking crazy. Oh, that's it. That's your other new Black Album rant, by the way, Will.

01:42:26.200 --> 01:42:55.100
Some people don't like clowns. Will doesn't like children singing. But he likes children. I love children. I have two of my own. They're great. I'm hugely digging this hate album. I love the last one. Weirdly enough, I think they're being better than Behemoth at this point. Dare I say. Bold words?

01:42:57.460 --> 01:43:26.160
Anything else? No? I just shut everything down. I don't want to go after that. Anybody else got anything else to say? Well, they're better than Behemoths. All right. I like it, but I could use some children singing. Thank you, man. Keep that in mind for the next Immortal Bird album, Ray. Dude, I got a direct link to some kids. I mean, I don't know the ethics to be involved with that. I do work for like four

01:43:26.240 --> 01:43:52.380
But like it's possible I could enlist some youths in like an extremely legal and chill way to sing on the next immortal bird that would be funny. Well like they're not bad and they're not like children's choir they're all like singers who are probably better than I am so at that point it would be like almost exploitative because they're just like offering adult level talent in a child size and it's like fucked up. And presumably at a child's salary.

01:43:55.780 --> 01:44:25.740
Looking forward to that Immortal Chicks album. Yeah, all the little babies. I'll just be in a giant nest and they'll just be around. Yeah. We'll get Kiki's 1313 to draw it, but one of us is bleeding and someone else is exploding. Could you spell that author's name or that artist's name? You said it a few times. K-I-K-Y-Z-1313. Okay, thanks. I assume she has a presence on the web in the various ways.

01:44:25.780 --> 01:44:55.480
She's quite successful. Okay. She's got a website, Jay. I looked at it. Cool. And an Instagram and a Facebook. Check her out. Like, subscribe, comment. I'm on it. I'm on it. I thought there was no plugging on this cast. What's going on? No, no, no. There's no ban on plugging. All right. Next album is Infernal Conjuration. Their first album, Infernal Metallum Mortis. They're a Mexican death metal band.

01:44:56.560 --> 01:45:25.740
And I read, what did they say? It sounded like Slayer meets Morbid Angel. And I kind of agreed with that. Okay. Will, did you listen to it? I did not. I was chasing children all day, trying to get them to stop singing. Right, right. Okay, well, you might want to check it out. I thought it was kind of cool. And then the new Memoriam album, Requiem for Mankind. This is their third album. For anyone that is not aware, this is sort of a...

01:45:27.080 --> 01:45:55.480
We're not going to have Bolt Thrower anymore, but at least we have this. And I dig it. I wasn't as big of a fan of the last album. The first album was great. Second album was me. And this one, I think, is a little bit better again. I dug it. Me too. I liked it. Yeah, my two cents is, yeah, I like this one more than the first two. I'm going to go along with Will on that. And it may just be that it didn't catch me at the right time, but this time I'm listening to more than I did those other ones.

01:45:55.860 --> 01:46:22.840
Is it their third album in three years? Yeah, they've been great. Yeah. No, I like this one the best. It's heavier. It's tough because I love Bolt Thriller so much, and it's hard not to compare, even though I know I shouldn't do that. It's very hard for me. All right. And our last new release. Jay, you might want to help me out with the pronunciation here, but I'm going to go with Slough Fag. You got it. That's right. All right. What did you call him? Exactly.

01:46:25.760 --> 01:46:55.740
10th album, New Organon. I want to say Oregano or something like that. New Organon. These guys are an acquired taste, I would say. Even more so than they used to be. They are a local band by me. I've been a fan in the past. I'm not crazy about this new one. When I worked at San Francisco State, he was taking philosophy courses. And now I think he teaches philosophy. And that is all over this record. I'm also not a huge fan of that particular

01:46:57.020 --> 01:47:23.560
Undertaking Philosophy. I think there are better ways to go about seeking the truth in the universe and all that shit. In any case, I'm not crazy about it. Also, his worship for Thin Lizzy is fucking out front on this one, which it always is. But right now, it sounds like a Thin Lizzy record from 1978, basically. Interesting. Yeah, I've never been a huge fan. I've liked bits and pieces here and there, and I actually liked this one pretty well compared to past albums.

01:47:24.880 --> 01:47:28.660
My favorite two are they have one called atavism I like a lot and they have one called

01:47:29.160 --> 01:47:33.360
one called traveler which was like one of their early ones and it's like based on a weird role

01:47:33.480 --> 01:47:38.920
playing game about space pirates which it's like a real game I don't know anything about the game

01:47:39.340 --> 01:47:43.380
but in any case but you know don't let anybody don't let me talk anybody out of it you know

01:47:44.040 --> 01:47:49.100
I'm with you Jay like I used to I used to really like Slothfeg and I've seen him play a bunch of times

01:47:50.080 --> 01:47:54.840
but when I listen to this album I just have this feeling I've moved on from that band I don't know

01:47:56.340 --> 01:48:00.220
I like this stuff in the past but I don't really need new stuff from Slough Fag.

01:48:00.630 --> 01:48:01.480
Maybe that's it. Yeah.

01:48:01.960 --> 01:48:02.140
Yeah.

01:48:02.390 --> 01:48:02.520
Yeah.

01:48:02.520 --> 01:48:06.300
We had the good fortune to play with him a couple of times and he's really a nice guy too.

01:48:06.310 --> 01:48:06.720
I like Mike.

01:48:07.040 --> 01:48:07.320
Cool.

01:48:08.820 --> 01:48:09.140
All right.

01:48:10.360 --> 01:48:12.180
Let's move on to our top five.

01:48:23.880 --> 01:48:39.280
We made a list, we all made lists. We made a list, man, we all made a list. We made a list, and we all made a list, and we're gonna tell you all about it right now. Courtesy this time of Markassan.

01:48:39.880 --> 01:49:09.420
This is the top five movies that are metal as fuck. Widely open to interpretation. Yes. Honestly, this was really tricky and I came up with three different lists and was just like, this is hard. Then I resented having homework and I was like, fuck. Well, sorry. It was inspired by you actually, Ray, because I noticed that you were wearing a John Carpenter's The Thing shirt and I was like, oh, she likes some cool movies. Yeah, I do like some cool movies, but like,

01:49:10.740 --> 01:49:39.740
Actually, by the way, a movie that is metal as fuck. It's pretty metal. Number one on my list. Spoiler alert. What? That is a good movie. I love that movie. So, in terms of how we approach these lists, we discussed this ahead of time, and they can be movies that are literally about metal things, or they can just be movies that are so badass, like, you know, that one, that they are metal by

01:49:40.160 --> 01:49:40.560
Association.

01:49:41.980 --> 01:49:42.620
Metal Adjacent.

01:49:43.280 --> 01:49:43.440
Yes.

01:49:45.240 --> 01:49:51.380
And let's just point out that you could see, you could be driving down the road and see something that you thought was really cool and just go, dude, that's so fucking metal.

01:49:51.580 --> 01:49:54.920
So I think that broad of an interpretation is more than welcome here.

01:49:56.660 --> 01:49:59.080
Normally, we have a rotation.

01:49:59.480 --> 01:50:05.620
What we do here, Ray, is we each go through and we give our number five.

01:50:06.040 --> 01:50:35.420
And then we sort of cycle down and everybody gives their four and all the way down to one. And then it's like, ooh, our number ones. And normally the guest goes first. However, I was thinking today, you know, it's kind of mean to make the guest go first when they don't know what the fuck they're doing. And so I'm going to give you the option of going last. I think I need to like just be quiet for a while. I am worried that all of my movies are going to get picked and I'm going to get all upset.

01:50:35.440 --> 01:51:05.140
They might, yeah. Well, actually, we like it when our lists align, because so often they don't, and we argue. Yeah, so. Okay, no, I'll totally go last. I would love to go last. I relish the opportunity to go last. Okay, so it will be Markisan Matt, John, Will, Jay, me, and then Ray. All right. So take us up, Markisan. Number five.

01:51:05.420 --> 01:51:33.300
is the Beastmaster from 1980. Oh, shit. Oh, wow. That's a good choice. Mark Singer? Isn't that his name? Yep. A child stolen from his mother's womb by a witch. He rose into dog. That was such an awesome bad movie. It was great. They had these crazy man-backed creatures that would suck you in and digest you in seconds and spit you out. Ferrets. Very metal stuff. The tiger was all black.

01:51:35.440 --> 01:52:05.400
would talk to that eagle walk or whatever i can't do it probably ray probably can do it way better than me i love it was like one of the most metal things i ever saw when i was like very very small wee all right okay that's a good start yeah matt all right uh my two criteria though when i made this list obviously number one i had to see the movie and number two i stuck with strictly fiction and i would say my number five may be a gimme uh this is spinal tap

01:52:06.360 --> 01:52:34.860
I wonder how many lists it'll be on. And it's not on mine. John. Before there was Get to the Choppa, there was Crush Your Enemies, See Them Driven Before You, and Hear the Lamentations of the Women. Oh, that Jason Momoa thing. No. I'm sorry. That was actually my very first thought of a metal movie that is not about metal. It's metal, though. Conan the Barbarian.

01:52:35.900 --> 01:53:05.200
James Earl Jones, I love that beginning part where Conan's with his mom and he's just staring at her. It's like five minutes long and then she just lops her head off. I think that movie is metal in the same way Molly Hatchett is metal simply because of Frank Frazetta. Which they are not, you know what I mean? But you know what I'm saying. The ocean strike Atlantis. We're going to go back to Uber Voices after one of these. I love that.

01:53:05.900 --> 01:53:34.660
All right, Will. Yeah, I'll be the first one to admit I didn't do a whole lot of research on this because I actually didn't think I was going to make it tonight. And I barely made it. But I do have a couple. They're not in any really particular order. But I'm not sure if you guys know the 2015 movie The Witch. Oh, yeah. I haven't seen it. I really want to. Totally metal. Yeah, yeah. It's all about like a black goat and witches.

01:53:35.440 --> 01:54:04.580
and disappearance of children. And yeah, it's pretty fucking metal. More children, Will. It's all about the children with you. I know. As long as they don't sing. Well, technically, if it is, it's a horror movie for Will. I don't think there's anything. Have you seen that guy's next movie called Hereditary? Yes. That's fucked up movie. It will fuck up, dude. Yes. I've never seen it until it jumps the shark the last 20 minutes and you're like, oh, they're taking the whole all the shit was real approach. No thanks. Have you seen The Witch?

01:54:05.440 --> 01:54:35.400
I kind of like got bored with it and stopped watching but hey only because I was watching it on a laptop during the day on laptop speakers I wasn't feeling it if I was like in a dark room with like a nice screen I think and good speakers I would have been all about it but I was like this is just not I can't and I and I'll buy your your your negativity on the hereditary that negativity not that the criticism but uh for me that particular thing worked you

01:54:35.440 --> 01:55:05.320
I was cool with that. I was just like, oh, man, this is fucked up. And also when that girl, when the girl dies, it's just like that movie took such a thrill. Yes. Oh, way. Like, yeah, that's insane. Like, there were definitely really cool aspects. It was super beautifully shot. And Tony Collette is a fucking treasure. Yeah. She's awesome. She's great in The Sixth Sense, too. She's really awesome in that. And other things. Yeah. Uh, John. No, it's Jay. Oh, excuse me. Well, mine,

01:55:05.420 --> 01:55:34.900
I wonder if anybody else will have this. And this is a movie that was false advertising when you were a kid because you went to see it simply because of the title. And it's not about this at all. But that doesn't make it any less metal. And the movie is called Heavy Metal. That movie, I loved it when I was, I mean, other than the fact that it's got the mob rules in it and a couple other things. But it is. The whole thing is so completely fucking metal. It's ridiculous. And I love that. John Candy is metal. Love metal. I forgot. I think Cheech and Chong are in that, too.

01:55:35.420 --> 01:56:05.400
Are they really? Yeah. Do you know who they play? Oh, is it the way? I don't know if that I think it's like the narrators or something. Well, there's that one sounds like Tommy Chong. No, there's the guys who fly that kind of space transport and they do all that space dope or whatever it is. It's got a name for it. Yeah, I think that's I think it's Tommy Chong. But the mob rules scene alone is enough to make it metal, but it's heavy metal. It is heavy metal. It's called heavy metal. What do you want? In 1981, I was nine years old and there's naked chicks in it. So I was

01:56:05.440 --> 01:56:06.000
Yes!

01:56:06.820 --> 01:56:10.560
I was like, there's boobs in it. No one's gonna say that there's boobs in it?

01:56:11.660 --> 01:56:12.380
Oh, really?

01:56:12.900 --> 01:56:13.780
Oh, Will Will.

01:56:13.800 --> 01:56:14.240
I apologize.

01:56:14.520 --> 01:56:15.180
Oh, I will.

01:56:15.720 --> 01:56:17.560
Yeah, boobs. That's what makes it metal.

01:56:18.040 --> 01:56:18.840
Boobs are metal.

01:56:19.210 --> 01:56:19.320
Yeah.

01:56:20.560 --> 01:56:25.620
Ray, you're the only second, I think, woman we've ever had on here, so everyone's being really shy.

01:56:26.200 --> 01:56:26.680
I get it.

01:56:26.900 --> 01:56:28.300
We usually talk about dicks a lot.

01:56:29.860 --> 01:56:32.040
I can't really relate on that.

01:56:35.300 --> 01:57:04.680
I had some really off-color commentary planned originally for that Jason Momoa question, but I dialed it back. Oh, you shouldn't do that. Oh, no, let it fly. Let it fly. It's all good. Really, I'll come back another time and talk about it, really. Oh, great. The Jason Momoa episode. A special edition. To just talk about Jason Momoa. Yeah. I can give you a special podcast between you and George. Yeah. Oh, yeah, we'll just go back and forth. Yeah.

01:57:06.460 --> 01:57:07.400
Oh my goodness.

01:57:08.260 --> 01:57:09.140
He fell hot.

01:57:11.620 --> 01:57:11.780
Okay.

01:57:11.900 --> 01:57:16.360
My number five is on here entirely because I didn't want Jay to move to Iceland.

01:57:17.160 --> 01:57:18.000
And that's Deathgasm.

01:57:19.480 --> 01:57:19.760
Thank you,

01:57:19.860 --> 01:57:19.960
George.

01:57:22.760 --> 01:57:23.580
It is good,

01:57:23.780 --> 01:57:23.880
dude.

01:57:23.940 --> 01:57:24.500
It's so good.

01:57:26.060 --> 01:57:28.340
My list is all just metal movies.

01:57:28.600 --> 01:57:30.440
So I didn't put enough thought into it,

01:57:30.440 --> 01:57:30.740
I guess.

01:57:31.300 --> 01:57:32.280
Mine is mostly with,

01:57:32.680 --> 01:57:33.000
there's a mix,

01:57:33.180 --> 01:57:34.260
but I mean,

01:57:34.280 --> 01:58:04.260
I can't say enough about that movie. The scene where they do the kind of basically full moon mysticism video shoot, which is brilliant, and eating the ice cream with the corpse paint, shopping at the record store. That movie captures some real metal moments. Speaking of corpse paint, I didn't get a chance to watch this, but I saw something like on Facebook that there was a country music video where they were wearing corpse paint. Did anybody see that? I saw the headline. The headline was corpse paint finally comes to country. Yeah, and I wanted to watch the video, but I got in

01:58:04.320 --> 01:58:33.760
and I didn't get to do it before we recorded. But I want to go check that out. I'm scared, but you know. Ever since you went to Nashville, dude. It's all about the country. You've changed, George. You really have. I got my Johnny Cash t-shirt. You have. Since the show started, I've totally changed. You've really gone downhill. All right, Ray, you're up. All right.

01:58:34.280 --> 01:59:04.220
My number five, it's pretty obvious, but no one else did it for their number five. My number five was Lord of the Rings, just as a franchise. That's metal. Lord of the Rings, just obviously the source material has been the inspiration for a ton of sick-ass bands, like fucking Summoning and Flying Guardian. So like, yeah, obviously a part of the metal canon, but also the films themselves were so well done. Like, the time that they were coming out, they were like,

01:59:04.280 --> 01:59:34.220
these fucking events. They were just so... And the music, like Howard Shore, fuck me up. He's metal as fuck. He is incredible. So yeah, Lord of the Rings. Maybe it should even be higher on my list. We're fine to it. We literally, like this afternoon, we tried to get our kids to get into the first movie and about halfway through, they're just like, I don't know, we just don't like it. And my wife and I, we looked at each other like, all right, another time. My favorite thing is showing kids stuff that they don't like and them politely like trying to figure out how to tell you without hurting your feelings.

01:59:36.020 --> 02:00:03.860
The one tried to play that the ring rates were too scary and we're like, no, that's bullshit. We know you love that. And so we literally just looked at each other like, all right, we're going to try this again in about two years because they better fucking like this. So the worst part, though, is when you show them things that you love as a kid, but they actually aren't that good. Like I loved He-Man, the cartoon as a kid. Try to show that to kids now where they would just do the scene and just the same scene would loop over and over.

02:00:04.400 --> 02:00:34.260
And I actually had to apologize to my nephews and be like, I'm so sorry I showed you this. I just realized I was not real bright as a child. Our shows were terrible. They were terrible. The standards have changed a little bit since we were young. You know what's funny is this morning I took my wife and I took our kids to see Toy Story 4 and they make a funny comment about He-Man. There's like this little tiny super miniature

02:00:34.300 --> 02:00:41.120
toy doll who's a cop and they're making fun of her like hey listen the he-man thing that was a

02:00:41.140 --> 02:00:47.940
mistake like that was a rough time in my life like they were making fun of he-man in 2024 it's bad it's so bad

02:00:49.260 --> 02:00:58.139
all right mark us on number four number four for me is mandy from 2018 death metal horror but a guy

02:00:58.140 --> 02:00:59.140
seeking revenge.

02:00:59.140 --> 02:00:59.800
Nick is the

02:01:28.160 --> 02:01:58.120
Why is this your number four? Because I have better ones to come. Do you hate Netflix or something? But Nick Cage is amazing and he's crazy as fuck like he does. Yeah. Oh, there's also a Cheddar Goblin in it, which is pretty metal. Cheddar Goblin? Have you seen it? Oh, you got to see it. It's so good. You know what? No spoilers. You need to see it. It's not on Netflix anymore, though. Am I right? Was it made by Netflix? No, it wasn't made. It was in

02:01:58.600 --> 02:02:28.120
I don't know it might be on Amazon I don't know if it's free though I mean you could get it on either of those oh you know what no I got it um I I specifically signed up for uh like chill or chiller or something oh yeah chiller yeah like one of these horror movie streaming tv shows and I signed up for whatever it's out to see this because so many people told me so many good things about it I've never heard of it did you like it oh I loved it it's so good oh you haven't heard of it oh George just because it's

02:02:28.160 --> 02:02:32.800
I just made a note. I'm going to check this out. It's like a complete throwback to the

02:02:33.420 --> 02:02:35.020
soundtrack and everything that they do

02:02:35.580 --> 02:02:36.960
is very 80s-ish.

02:02:37.120 --> 02:02:37.700
It's so good.

02:02:39.260 --> 02:02:41.220
I own it. I have it on Blu-ray. You can borrow it, Ray.

02:02:41.540 --> 02:02:42.500
I'll let you borrow it if you want.

02:02:43.400 --> 02:02:45.000
You guys probably live a block away from each other.

02:02:45.280 --> 02:02:47.700
I heard it so good and I just missed it

02:02:47.700 --> 02:02:49.740
while it was on Netflix and just never watched it.

02:02:50.040 --> 02:02:50.440
Yeah, okay.

02:02:53.220 --> 02:02:53.580
Matt?

02:02:54.040 --> 02:02:55.700
Me. My number four,

02:02:56.010 --> 02:02:57.140
The Raid, Redemption.

02:02:59.600 --> 02:03:26.860
I love the Raid movies. I actually don't know it. Don't know it. I don't know. It's just like the action and death of it just makes it feel so metal to me. I mean, my butt cheeks were just clenched the entire time. I totally forgot about that movie. It probably would have made my list if I didn't put more thought into it. But I didn't put any thought into it. No, I'm just kidding. It's all good. Not unlike Will. It's all good. Matt, are those like, where are they made?

02:03:26.880 --> 02:03:55.460
Hong Kong, Indonesia. I forget where they're made, those movies. They have the best action scenes. The Raid and the Raid 2. Because they keep the camera on the action the whole time. It's not like they do those quick cuts where they can hide shit. It's one camera on the action the whole time. It's unbelievable. Completely unknown to me. Definitely check it out. Definitely check it out. Yeah. John.

02:03:56.880 --> 02:04:26.480
My number four is the most commercial film on here, but anytime you have swords and people getting their heads cut off and lions, it's kind of cool. Gladiator. I was wondering where the lions were coming in. Are you going to do the big lion? You got to do it. No. Oh, well, yeah. Well, there's a couple of lines, but how can you not, how can you not like, well, no, I can't do it because I can't remember the whole. Just do it. Just do it, John. Come on. There's four words. You just got to do four words.

02:04:26.880 --> 02:04:56.560
Well, no, I thought you were referring to his title where it's like 14 different titles now. Are You Not Entertained? Yes. That's the one. Is this not why you're here? I should have put that on the poster. John, did you hear they're going to do a sequel to that? Shut up. I just read this. Isn't that right? Yeah. The kid that Russell Crowe, he's like the prince or whatever in that movie, I haven't seen in a long time. But I guess his focus is on him like years later, like 20 years later or something. I heard that they're making it. Same.

02:04:57.300 --> 02:04:59.640
Yeah, Ridley Scott is good.

02:05:00.940 --> 02:05:03.640
He's getting up there, by the way. I saw some interview with him recently.

02:05:04.140 --> 02:05:05.720
He's got him in his late 70s.

02:05:05.940 --> 02:05:06.900
He's in his 80s.

02:05:08.440 --> 02:05:10.640
Okay. Maybe that's why I know.

02:05:11.740 --> 02:05:14.080
Wasn't there an alien thing coming out again soon, too, or something?

02:05:14.400 --> 02:05:14.940
Another alien thing?

02:05:15.080 --> 02:05:15.300
Another one?

02:05:17.880 --> 02:05:18.080
Yeah.

02:05:18.490 --> 02:05:18.580
Huh.

02:05:19.650 --> 02:05:22.540
I know there's a Rambo 5 in the theater.

02:05:22.880 --> 02:05:24.740
Do you know what it's called? Do you know what its subtitle is?

02:05:25.620 --> 02:05:26.160
Last Blood.

02:05:26.240 --> 02:05:55.520
Blast Blood. No. That's true. Oh my god. But Stallone said that if the movie's a big hit, he'd do more. I honestly was considering Rambo 4 for my list. I mean, I've never seen more body parks explode in one movie. Rambo 4 was like a slasher movie. Yeah. Absolutely. This is cool because I didn't know Matt was an action guy. Because if he knows the raid, he really likes action movies. I do. I do. I'm kind of a closet action guy.

02:05:56.260 --> 02:06:25.740
He likes a little action in the closet. Who doesn't like a little action in the closet? I walked into that one. Backwards. Over and over and over again. All right, we are at. That was Matt. Who was that? That was John, so we'll know. Will, sorry. Oh, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person going to have this on my list, but I remember the first time I saw the original of this, it freaked me the fuck out. The hills have eyes. Oh, yeah.

02:06:26.240 --> 02:06:55.880
Yep. That one dude. The guy with the no hair. It looks kind of like Jay. Yeah, it looks like Jay. Right, like that wasn't makeup. Yeah, how many times I've been walking around the street and people are like, hey, it's the Hills, they have a guys guy. Yeah. Is that Marty Freeman or the guy from Hills Out of Oz? Marty Feldman. Feldman, whatever his name is. Marty Feldman, it doesn't look anything like that. Is that the Megadeth guy? That's the Megadeth guy. Yeah. All right. Anyway, you all look weird, so.

02:06:56.240 --> 02:07:24.100
Yeah, no, that's what it comes to. Don't say that about our guest, Will. Hi. All right, my number four, other people are bound to, well, maybe other people will have it. It's depressing as fuck, hard to watch, but you gotta admit it's metal. Last day's here. Oh, yeah. Oh, God, yeah. Oh, God. I just want to punch that guy in the face now after everything. Especially after everything. Yeah, he's right.

02:07:26.260 --> 02:07:56.140
of his mom is. And then he assaulted that woman. She only lives like half an hour from here. Yeah. Not only that, all the people that backed him on the comeback and everything, and he just shit all over him. So. Yeah. Like, I call these just, like, kind of, like, douchey, do-mey, throwback, like, pseudo-hypster acquaintances who are still just like, Pettigrew is amazing! Like, he's so cool, he's an icon. And it's, like, these women. He's, like, youngish women. And I'm like, are you serious? Yeah. Yeah, it's crazy.

02:07:56.780 --> 02:07:57.140
Yeah.

02:07:57.780 --> 02:07:59.780
Those are the same kinds of girls that write to guys in prison.

02:07:59.990 --> 02:08:00.320
I mean.

02:08:02.960 --> 02:08:05.780
Like, feed off his mom, like, for fuck's sake.

02:08:06.120 --> 02:08:09.080
And has a whole history of shitty conduct with a lot of other people.

02:08:09.680 --> 02:08:09.780
Yeah.

02:08:09.900 --> 02:08:14.840
Like, I can't remember which bands were involved, and I definitely don't want to say the wrong ones,

02:08:14.910 --> 02:08:20.380
but there were two bands, both that had women in them, both of whom dropped off a tour with Pentagram because of his behavior,

02:08:20.590 --> 02:08:22.140
and that was like four or five years ago.

02:08:22.780 --> 02:08:23.080
Oh.

02:08:23.620 --> 02:08:23.700
Yep.

02:08:24.740 --> 02:08:24.840
Yeah.

02:08:26.680 --> 02:08:55.120
Yeah, to be sure. And that's why it makes it difficult to choose that movie, in all honesty, because I think we all find him such a reprehensible human being. Like, has there ever been anybody more self-absorbed? That's stated. It's a good movie, though. It's a great movie. Yeah, it's very good. And even though it doesn't translate into later real life, it even sort of has this redemption at the end of it, but yeah. And then we all learn the uncomfortable further truths. So, at any rate, that brings us to George.

02:08:55.340 --> 02:09:24.240
My number four is a little lighter. That would be Heavy Trip. Oh, yeah. I just saw that recently, and that was fun. Help me out. I don't remember what country it took place in. It's a foreign film. But basically, there's these guys out in the country that they have a band, and they're... Oh, yeah.

02:09:24.280 --> 02:09:53.620
Yeah, I saw that. They want to play the festival, but they don't actually have a gig there, but they told everybody they did, and so they're like, they have to fake it. Yeah. Isn't it Norway, I think? Isn't it, George? It is. That sounds right, yeah. Yeah, the trailer made that look really good, actually. It looks sort of endearing and sweet, actually. It was funny. Okay, all right, I'll check it out. I almost did it then. Well, I didn't. All right. Ray, number four.

02:09:54.400 --> 02:09:56.360
Number four for me,

02:09:56.620 --> 02:09:57.020
um,

02:09:57.560 --> 02:09:58.460
it's a little basic,

02:09:58.800 --> 02:10:01.900
but I can't deny my tastes.

02:10:02.400 --> 02:10:02.460
Uh,

02:10:02.760 --> 02:10:05.000
the dark night is my number four pick.

02:10:05.400 --> 02:10:05.560
Oh,

02:10:06.020 --> 02:10:06.100
yeah.

02:10:06.100 --> 02:10:06.120
Yep.

02:10:06.600 --> 02:10:06.720
Yep.

02:10:07.560 --> 02:10:08.640
When it came out,

02:10:08.680 --> 02:10:09.580
especially I was like,

02:10:09.800 --> 02:10:09.960
damn,

02:10:10.100 --> 02:10:11.460
I'm digging this dark aesthetic.

02:10:11.620 --> 02:10:12.620
I like score.

02:10:12.700 --> 02:10:13.740
I think it's Hans Zimmer.

02:10:14.020 --> 02:10:15.280
He loves all that ominous,

02:10:15.500 --> 02:10:15.760
brassy,

02:10:15.940 --> 02:10:16.520
heavy shit.

02:10:17.500 --> 02:10:17.980
Um,

02:10:18.480 --> 02:10:18.580
yeah.

02:10:19.080 --> 02:10:20.740
And it's like filmed in Chicago.

02:10:21.000 --> 02:10:21.840
There's a lot of like,

02:10:22.040 --> 02:10:22.220
it's,

02:10:23.460 --> 02:10:52.020
It's dope. It's metal. It's my number four. That's the Joker one, right? Yep. He's like the Joker, yep. So speaking of the Hans Zimmer thing, one of my favorite musical things in that movie is every time the Joker's about to do something, there's this high-pitched violin singular note that just quivers, and it is so fucking ominous. And it's so almost not even musical that you could not pay attention to it. But then you start to realize it's this theme that's happening. Oh, fuck. I love that.

02:10:52.300 --> 02:11:19.720
And that's a great movie. It's a good pull. Yeah, I'm surprised I didn't, I don't have any comic movies on it, but I'm a big comic guy. But I do love the fact that it's in Chicago, Ray, because every time I'm on Lower Whacker, I'm just like, yeah, fucking Batmobile, Jason. Exactly. It's so cool. Yeah. Yeah, and I have a friend of a friend who's been in that loft that they filmed that whole party scene out when the Joker crashes it. Yeah. Oh, awesome.

02:11:22.280 --> 02:11:50.840
there and knows the guy that owns it. Well, the guy that owns it has a cameo. He's the guy that the Joker kind of intimidates right at the beginning. That's the actual dude that owns that property. Cool. Fun fact. But yeah, that movie's sick. And I imagine Septic Flesh could do a really sick song for a movie or something. Yeah. Incidentally, the trailer for this, I was doubtful, but I saw the trailer for the Joaquin Phoenix thing. I gotta say it looks pretty fucking good.

02:11:52.300 --> 02:12:21.760
I saw it last night and I was like, you know what? If anyone can do this, Joaquin's like one of our last artist kind of actors. Agreed. Yeah. He's really good. Yeah, he can handle it. I'm pretty stoked for it, actually. It looks great. I'm getting excited, yeah. You do. I watched it last night three times. Mark us on number three. My number three is Death Chasm for Jay. Well, also because I love the movie. I own it.

02:12:22.300 --> 02:12:51.300
Yes, so I don't, not much needs to be said about that one. I think I, just to bring Ray up to speed, I think I made a threat that anybody who didn't choose that movie, I was going to move to Iceland, apparently, is what George says the threat was, so hopefully it's on every list. There's not much of a threat, because Iceland's pretty great. Pretty nice. Yeah, I know. It's like, oh, if it's not on there, Markisane's going to move to Hawaii. As I was going to say, he can start using that now. Matt.

02:12:52.300 --> 02:13:21.740
I have not seen Death Chasm and I'll be in Iceland in a few, well, like a month and a half. So Jay, if you move there, that's totally fine. I'm flying through Iceland to get to Germany. Because literally as opposed to a direct flight to Hamburg, I can fly to Reykjavik and spend the night and then fly to Germany and it's actually cheaper. So you can definitely move there if you want. But for my number three, I combined two movies and one's an Eastern, one is a Western.

02:13:21.840 --> 02:13:51.520
and they are both about revenge and to me there's nothing more metal about revenge and my number three is Kill Bill. Ah, nice. Love it. Dude, I've been waiting for them to do the ultimate cut where they take the two movies and they filmed all that Japanese animation. It's like longer and it's in the middle and they filmed it a couple times the full thing in California but they've never released it as a one film and I don't know why. They keep waiting for it. On that same topic, I'm totally with you on that.

02:13:51.620 --> 02:14:19.620
On that same topic, has anybody watched how they recut The Hateful Eight for Netflix? They made it like a four-part thing? No. I love The Hateful Eight. Yeah, I've not watched it yet. Oh, okay. That's the first I've heard of it, actually. All right, cool. John. So Ray mentioned John Carpenter when we started.

02:14:21.620 --> 02:14:51.080
list, but not the same film. It's a year before, but it also stars Kurt Russell with maybe one of the coolest names ever. Snake Plissken. Yes. Snake Plissken. Yes. Awesome pull. Escape from New York. Escape from New York. I love that movie, John. Just so good. I like have a vague understanding of what it's about, but I feel like I'm really listening. Oh, you got to see that movie. Oh, yeah, it's good. Just go.

02:14:51.600 --> 02:15:21.580
If you're a fan of seeing Escape from L.A. because the super cheesy special effects in it will turn you off in about three seconds. Now stick to the... They're cheesy in the John Carpenter thing too though. It's just there's something charming about it, man. Yeah, there's nothing charming about Escape from L.A. No, it's pretty bad. Yeah, it is. Yeah, that was a shame. But that was... And I mean, we were all testosterone-filled young boys when that came out. So it was perfectly timed for our... Except Ray. To fill our...

02:15:23.460 --> 02:15:24.660
Hey, anything's possible.

02:15:25.340 --> 02:15:26.680
I thought that went without saying, but

02:15:27.680 --> 02:15:28.720
sorry about that.

02:15:31.240 --> 02:15:31.700
All right, well.

02:15:34.360 --> 02:15:36.060
Let me look at what is my

02:15:36.240 --> 02:15:37.380
are we on three? Yep.

02:15:38.080 --> 02:15:38.220
Indeed.

02:15:40.180 --> 02:15:40.760
The Road.

02:15:41.860 --> 02:15:42.140
Yes.

02:15:42.860 --> 02:15:43.420
Yes.

02:15:45.360 --> 02:15:45.580
Nice.

02:15:46.000 --> 02:15:48.240
And probably one of my favorite black album

02:15:48.580 --> 02:15:50.420
black metal albums ever was

02:15:50.440 --> 02:16:16.660
The Bandwilt from Winnipeg. Yeah. And you're welcome, Dan Klagenjar. I've interacted with Dan so much. I've sent him things. We've Facebook messaged each other. We've emailed each other. I still have no fucking idea how to say his name. I know how to say it if you want. How's it? What a judge.

02:16:20.940 --> 02:16:49.240
I feel like you and I are going to meet up at a show sometime and I will get a pronunciation in some way. Coming from the book. Oh, I'm sorry. Go ahead. Anyway, blah, blah, blah. So anyway, the band Wilt did a concept album called Ruin and was based on the Cormac McCarthy novel, The Road, which was then put into the moon road. It's actually more of it.

02:16:50.420 --> 02:17:19.719
When I watched that movie, I was like, this is deep. This is heavy. I have a son, so I just see myself doing everything possible to try and train my young son to survive in a cannibalistic, post-apocalyptic world. Parenting is metal. I love that book so much. I did. I named a song on our first EP chapter. Is it a chapter?

02:17:20.939 --> 02:17:49.200
There's a sentence in the road that talks about an Ashen Scabland. And I just named a song that because I was like, what the fuck, Cormac McCarthy? That's so memorable. Actually, Ashen Scabland would be a great metal band name. Yeah. Song already, so maybe they can name their band after a song like I did. Yeah, perfect. Well, I had read the book, and it was one of those books where the movie translation did not let me down. And there's so many good scenes in that.

02:17:50.420 --> 02:18:20.380
scene, like, and they never describe, they never really find out what the disaster is, you know what I mean? But the scene when, in the middle of the night, when he looks out, things are sort of starting to explode, and he starts to fill the bathtub, and his wife is like, why are you, are you taking a bath? And he goes, I'm not, you know what I mean? Like, the world's coming to an end. I mean, there's so many, like, high-tension moments in that movie. Jesus. That's good stuff. All right, what's your three, Jay? Jay's three. Mine has, it had a different name in America when it was released in 1967 or 8 or whenever it came out, but it's got a baphomet, or baphomet,

02:18:22.019 --> 02:18:49.920
It's a great, great, old Hammer-style horror film, but I don't think it's Hammer Horror. The Devil Rides Out. If any of you guys haven't seen this, you need to see The Devil Rides Out. It's fucking brilliant, dude. It's basically what every Electric Wizard record is based on. It's good. It's just like this local satanic cult, and this rich family lives near them, but it takes place in Britain, so they're all very proper, and they have to do this big ritual, and they actually conjure up an actual demon.

02:18:49.960 --> 02:19:19.300
It's so fucking good. And it's all done in 68. You know what I mean? So picture that with 68 Technicolor. It's fucking brilliant, man. The devil rides out. Sweet. I have not seen that one. It's a classic. Amongst the guys, the horror film fans of that era of stuff, it's the one. All right. Okay. My number three is one that a lot of people love to hate. But it fared pretty well on this podcast.

02:19:19.960 --> 02:19:49.040
It would be Lords of Chaos. Oh, yeah. That's good. I love that movie. I liked it, too. And moving on. Ray. Oh, okay. This is what, number two? Three. Three. Okay. My number three might be on other people's lists. I thought it was going to come up already. My number three is the original Korean Oldboy.

02:19:51.540 --> 02:20:16.020
Definitely thought about it. Yeah. So I put old boy on there. Definitely not the remake. The remake is metal in the worst way possible. The remake is like, it's like, uh, I can't, I don't hate any band enough to compare it to the remake with Josh Brolin. Like, fuck that shit forever. But the original Ray, have you ever heard the black album?

02:20:19.960 --> 02:20:20.820
Ready for his rant.

02:20:22.439 --> 02:20:23.540
It's not that bad.

02:20:23.760 --> 02:20:25.320
You guys are giving me a few to jot down here.

02:20:25.800 --> 02:20:27.920
Unrelated, Ray, have you watched the whole Revenge trilogy?

02:20:29.220 --> 02:20:29.420
Yeah.

02:20:29.720 --> 02:20:30.480
Okay, right on.

02:20:30.680 --> 02:20:30.800
Yeah.

02:20:31.939 --> 02:20:34.300
But yes, I pick Oldboy, and that's all.

02:20:34.420 --> 02:20:36.800
And if you haven't seen it, you should see it.

02:20:37.160 --> 02:20:38.120
It's 30 and 10.

02:20:38.660 --> 02:20:39.860
Especially if you're a dad.

02:20:41.880 --> 02:20:42.600
All right, written down.

02:20:43.540 --> 02:20:43.860
Shot it.

02:20:45.740 --> 02:20:47.020
All right, Markisan number two.

02:20:47.520 --> 02:21:17.040
My number two is Beowulf. What? Which variety? Yeah, which one? The animated one from 2007. Oh, and Jolie in that? Yeah, badass lead who fights the monster Grendel in the nude inside a mead hall, which I love mead. I'm fucking drinking mead right now. There's a fucking dragon in it. It's written by Neil Gaiman, who's one of my favorite authors. Angelina Jolie is in it as a sultry, manipulator.

02:21:17.160 --> 02:21:18.100
She-Beast.

02:21:18.580 --> 02:21:18.980
Yeah!

02:21:20.020 --> 02:21:22.800
And Beowulf is one of my all-time favorite stories.

02:21:23.060 --> 02:21:26.540
I love the epic poem, so I have it in different translations.

02:21:27.400 --> 02:21:30.320
And if everybody wants to read it, get the Seamus Haney.

02:21:30.819 --> 02:21:35.420
Your description of Angelina Jolie is a, what was that, something, sultry manipulative?

02:21:35.540 --> 02:21:37.100
Sultry manipulative She-Beast, yes.

02:21:37.180 --> 02:21:42.840
Do you think her agent reached out to her and was like, I got one for you that's going to be a real stretch, but I think you can pull it off.

02:21:44.160 --> 02:21:44.680
I'm just joking.

02:21:45.000 --> 02:21:46.440
I'm assuming she's probably a lovely person.

02:21:46.980 --> 02:22:16.560
Yeah, I love Beowulf. Ripper, Slasher. So good, man. So metal. I don't think most people would think of it. Did you? Yeah. I did, too. I saw it in a theory, too. Me, too. In 3D. I was in school at the time, and we had the Seamus Haney version. My teacher was, like, militant about that. She's like, this is really good translation. If I see you with another translation, you're fucking failing. You're not going to understand shit. Wow. Actually, that would have been the Seamus. That probably

02:22:16.580 --> 02:22:46.460
I'm not too far from the movie. That's shame to say anything. It hasn't been around forever. I'm trying to think of when it came out. Because I remember reading about the New York. I'd have to look it up. I think you're right. It's been around a while now. But yeah, it's the best of all of them. Oh, that's a great choice. Matt, number two. All right, my number two. When I was a wee pup, there was a trilogy of movies that I kind of cut my teeth on that were what I feel like was about the apocalypse. And a side point to that is I'm not,

02:22:50.319 --> 02:23:16.480
I'm not a huge fan of modern adaptations and the reality is when I was a kid I saw the road warrior and I thought it was amazing I thought it was crazy and I kind of kind of engulfed the whole trilogy of Mad Max and I loved it but when I saw the new Mad Max Mad Max Fury Road I felt like it really it encapsulated what was before and obviously with the same director but I mean I thought that movie was so metal it was insane.

02:23:16.580 --> 02:23:41.660
The dude playing was like a base on the front of the mask and everything. Only to be mimicked by Conan O'Brien. I love both. Let me ask you guys, because I watched that movie and I was just completely confused by the whole thing in a weird sort of way, because was there like three lines of dialogue in that entire movie? It was not a real wordy movie. Did you have the sound up?

02:23:46.600 --> 02:24:16.560
Against emotive acting, Will? I don't understand. I think they really did capture the aesthetic of the old ones, though, with modern technology. But I will say this, the second one, well, The Road Warrior. Every time I see it, and it's been a while since I've seen it, I'm just like, how did somebody not get killed making this movie? It is the most dangerous-looking movie ever. Well, yeah, that guy lost his fingers. Exactly, with the boomerang. Shut up! Okay, fine. I did. When I was studying abroad in Australia, I went to

02:24:18.739 --> 02:24:46.020
What's it called? Cooper Pedy. Cooper Pedy is a town in Australia where they do a lot of opal mining. And so one of the scenes, I guess, I think it was in Mad Mad. Yeah, not the. Whatever, the second one where they got where they chase. Yeah, Roadwear, where they chase. Maybe it was maybe it was Thunderdome, but where they chase like the crazy guy with the the the old World War One or World War Two, like hat on his like helmet.

02:24:46.580 --> 02:25:16.300
Like the leather, like almost like an old football helmet. And he's chasing him through like in a cave house thing. I've been inside that cave house. Oh, he's the plane. The guy who flies the plane. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He later shows up in the Matrix. Yeah, yeah. So what movie was that? That was, God, was that part three? Yeah, it's not part two. Yeah, yeah. Anyway, that's a Wikipedia Australia in bumfuck nowhere. Oh, I forgot why you were telling us.

02:25:16.600 --> 02:25:46.420
that was like having a little child tell you about a movie and then they're driving and there's this thing. I remember he's like, this guy gets real mad. But then he turns into like the train master in the Matrix. Well, yeah. Part two, part three, probably. It is definitely part three. Yeah. John. After all that. Tangents. So I picked one.

02:25:47.460 --> 02:26:16.520
just because I felt I had to put it on here. And it was the first time I think anyone ever tackled the subject of what a metalhead was, which I always thought was really cool. And it spawned off a gazillion more films. But I chose Metal Headbanger's Journey. I love that. I mean, I don't agree with everything Sam Dunn says, especially his metal trees. But I'll take it all just because of what it is. I own one DVD and it is that.

02:26:17.300 --> 02:26:46.520
That's a true story. Yeah. You know, we got flight six six because of it. We got Rush Beyond the Lighted Stage. We got Twisted Sister. Yeah. So, Twisted fucking Sister. Was he involved in that? God, you know, my accuracy rate tonight is shit, so don't believe that. Well, maybe you were just saying he sort of inspired that. I watched that again recently. That's a fucking great documentary, man. I do know he has the Super Duper Alice Cooper, which I have not watched. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

02:26:46.600 --> 02:27:16.560
Yeah, that's good. And he's got the ZZ Top one coming. All right. Will. My number two, as mentioned before, Mandy. Nick Cage. There it is. That is just a fucked up film. Throwback film. Totally metal film. And I think, in fact, I think his girlfriend or wife in the movie is wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt through all of it. I'm pretty sure. I may be mistaken. I don't think it's...

02:27:17.540 --> 02:27:18.540
I can't remember now.

02:27:18.660 --> 02:27:21.180
It's something old school metal that she's wearing.

02:27:21.880 --> 02:27:25.180
Because it seems like the whole thing is a throwback to the 80s.

02:27:25.940 --> 02:27:26.400
Oh, big time.

02:27:26.880 --> 02:27:27.100
Yeah.

02:27:27.779 --> 02:27:29.560
Anyway, check it out.

02:27:31.260 --> 02:27:35.280
My number two was the reason I didn't comment on your number three much, George.

02:27:35.820 --> 02:27:36.200
Lord's of Chaos.

02:27:37.000 --> 02:27:38.020
Which I just think they really...

02:27:38.320 --> 02:27:41.200
I don't even care how much of it is historically accurate.

02:27:41.340 --> 02:27:42.300
Though I assume it's quite a bit.

02:27:43.080 --> 02:27:44.620
But I just think they really captured it.

02:27:44.640 --> 02:28:14.600
And there's just so many good moments in that movie. And up to and including, like, I think I mentioned this when we first talked about it, but one of my favorite things about that movie is how they kind of keep revisiting the scene where he's dealing with Dead's corpse. And they finally reveal at the end that he cried at the end. And there's just, like, so many good, like, pacing things like that in that movie. And it's just, like, that's, like, when they're all listening to Fast as a Shark by Accept at that party and going crazy. Like, I was in parties that looked not too dissimilar to that when I was a kid, you know, because we're all just full of this.

02:28:14.660 --> 02:28:20.800
Raging Raging Rage

02:28:21.360 --> 02:28:21.880
Raging Rage

02:28:22.120 --> 02:28:22.900
So descriptive

02:28:23.580 --> 02:28:25.260
What's a good adjective for rage?

02:28:25.410 --> 02:28:26.180
Help me out here, Ferguson

02:28:26.720 --> 02:28:31.020
But in any case, I thought it was a very, very fine movie

02:28:31.070 --> 02:28:33.100
And I have only seen it once, but I intend to watch it more

02:28:33.220 --> 02:28:36.500
Except for that the violence scenes in it are so visceral

02:28:36.630 --> 02:28:39.260
That it's almost hard to keep watching the screen

02:28:40.160 --> 02:28:42.500
The stabbings are stabbings, dude, Jesus

02:28:42.780 --> 02:28:43.560
It's very stabby

02:28:43.580 --> 02:29:11.700
You just mentioned the script. Visceral rage. Thank you. Thank you, man. You did it, man. Not me. No, I knew you could count on it. I knew I could count on it. You brought it together, though. Georgia Boy. My number two is kind of a horrible movie. It's from 1986. But I saw this thing in the theater, and the soundtrack is still one of my favorite albums. And it features Skippy from Family Ties.

02:29:13.600 --> 02:29:15.860
Lead Character and this is Trick or Treat.

02:29:16.920 --> 02:29:17.280
Yes!

02:29:17.380 --> 02:29:17.980
Oh my god!

02:29:18.680 --> 02:29:18.940
Great!

02:29:19.280 --> 02:29:20.040
Good choice, dude!

02:29:20.540 --> 02:29:21.380
Wow, that's a pull.

02:29:21.880 --> 02:29:25.320
It's got cameos by Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons.

02:29:26.800 --> 02:29:29.480
And it's just, you know, it's just a metal fucking movie.

02:29:29.590 --> 02:29:34.340
I mean, you know, Sammy Kerr was like the bad guy and all, but he's kind of cool.

02:29:35.420 --> 02:29:35.680
You know?

02:29:35.840 --> 02:29:39.060
Was Blackie Lawless in some way attached to that too, or am I making that up?

02:29:39.440 --> 02:29:39.880
It's been a while.

02:29:39.960 --> 02:29:41.120
I mean, I probably saw it in 1986.

02:29:41.820 --> 02:29:43.540
I don't know, but I remember...

02:29:43.560 --> 02:30:13.520
I thought it was so cool because I saw this movie in the theater when it came out and I was like the posters in his room killer dwarfs which okay kind of a lame band but at the time I liked them in 1986 and like anthrax I think and stuff like that and I was just like you don't see this in a in a movie that you actually see in the theater in the 1980s come on so that's just always been one of my favorite good call nice very cool I like this list because we have a lot of

02:30:13.560 --> 02:30:15.420
differences on them.

02:30:15.870 --> 02:30:16.420
Yeah, we're doing good.

02:30:16.510 --> 02:30:16.900
I like this.

02:30:17.000 --> 02:30:19.600
I've already written down at least, let's see, four movies I gotta watch.

02:30:21.400 --> 02:30:22.040
Ray, number two.

02:30:24.200 --> 02:30:28.200
My number two, hopefully some of y'all are familiar with this film.

02:30:29.079 --> 02:30:31.300
The Sam Rockwell movie, Moon.

02:30:31.740 --> 02:30:32.560
Oh, yes.

02:30:33.279 --> 02:30:33.920
That's great.

02:30:35.299 --> 02:30:37.720
I think that movie is fucking unbelievable.

02:30:38.020 --> 02:30:41.800
It sucks that Kevin Spacey is attached to it in any way.

02:30:49.101 --> 02:31:12.080
That movie is so weird and chilling and off-putting and odd that I'm not even sure what kind of angular, creepy metal I would compare it to, but it's definitely out there. Wasn't that Bowie's kid that made that? He is a famous guy. Duncan something or other? There's no CGI in that film. It's all practical.

02:31:14.220 --> 02:31:41.640
Yeah, it's fucking amazing. It's such a movie. It's by Duncan Jones. Yeah. That's David Bowie's kid. That's his son. Is it? You know, two comments about that. One is, for me anyway, one is that it's funny, of all the Me Too stuff, Kevin Spacey is a guy I can't watch. I don't think I'll ever see another thing with Kevin Spacey. He completely fucked up horrible bosses. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever, I can't, if he's in it, somebody wants me to watch that one.

02:31:42.380 --> 02:32:11.360
He's the voice of an evil-ish computer, sort of. I mean, he's not an evil computer. He's not evil. Well, I mean, I've seen Moon, but... Oh, right, okay. But I mean, I don't know. Just to kind of recognize what you were saying. Like, literally, Kevin Spacey is so creepy to me now that if he's in something I haven't seen yet, I'm not going to see it. You know what's funny is I take this in a completely other direction because I fucking hate Kevin Spacey for a completely other reason. He's one of those douchebags who went all the way down to Venezuela and was like, oh yeah, Hugo Chavez.

02:32:11.660 --> 02:32:41.540
the greatest thing ever. Like socialism. Yay. You guys remember that? No. Yes. Oh yeah. He did. Him and Danny Glover did it. Did you see the creepy thing that he put out recently that was like after House of Cards ended? Dude, that creepy. Was it like a Thanksgiving video or something? Yeah. Crooked in the kitchen. Underwood character and he's so, yeah, dude, fuck. Oh my God. That was messed up. That was so creepy. That was, that's like more creepy than Moon.

02:32:41.640 --> 02:33:11.080
And everybody's like, what the fuck is this? Yeah, the word tone-deaf comes to mind. But in any case, when Sam Rockwell runs into Sam Rockwell in that movie, I mean, I was just like, my mind was just like, holy shit, I have no idea what's going on, where's this going? Yeah. It was so troubling. That movie is so off-putting and cool. And in terms of like Weird Space Mystery Horror, it was a close tie with that Sunshine movie. I wanted to do that one. Oh, that's a great movie. I love that.

02:33:11.640 --> 02:33:41.620
I picked Moon. But yeah, Sunshine's incredible. Good choice. I brought this back to... Do you like the sci-fi movies? I love good sci-fi. That's me. We get to do number one. Number one. My number one. John already mentioned it. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun

02:33:41.640 --> 02:33:45.400
I wrote the book but I love the comics like I have all the issues

02:33:45.980 --> 02:33:52.380
new Conan comics coming out now but I watch this regularly I watch it a lot you collect the old

02:33:52.550 --> 02:34:11.080
Marvel ones yeah I have all the old Marvels I need to steal yours I have a bunch of them and I've been meaning to go back because I haven't collected a long time but I'm like I want to go back and finish that and get all the Conan's but you know it's fun because what I do with the Conan's like I

02:34:11.080 --> 02:34:16.820
I need maybe like 20 more of them to get the whole run. What I do is whenever I go to a comic book

02:34:17.080 --> 02:34:40.040
convention or I go to a new town, like when I'm doing signings for my book, I'll go to the comic shop and I'll buy them there. I never buy them online. I want to do the hunt like I did. I really like that part of it. And so it's been fun. Awesome. All right. My number one, I take the dark route and this is not the darkest movie I've ever seen. But when I saw it, it was the darkest movie I've ever seen.

02:34:40.779 --> 02:35:08.800
And that movie is seven. That was a fucked up movie. Yeah. First time I saw that, I was like, what? Oh, wait, but isn't Kevin Spacey in that? Yeah. I can't tell you that movie was inspired by some Cannibal Corpse songs or if Cannibal Corpse got inspired by that movie. That's it. Well, it was a Chuck Pahol thing, wasn't it? Yeah. I know it was David.

02:35:09.640 --> 02:35:39.360
The director was David Fincher. Thank you. He did Alien 4, actually. Yes. What's in a box? And Fight Club, which was Chuck. I just remember, and the line actually popped into my head today, it was about the guy who was tied down to the bed for a year and talking about once he dies, he still has hell to look forward to. And I mean, just like the movie could not have been more dark on any level. Probably the first movie I saw that really disturbed me. Yeah.

02:35:39.640 --> 02:35:40.360
It was pretty disturbing

02:35:41.560 --> 02:35:41.920
Yeah

02:35:42.210 --> 02:35:43.780
The atmosphere they achieved that movie

02:35:43.930 --> 02:35:45.900
I don't think I've ever seen that

02:35:46.090 --> 02:35:47.000
In another film

02:35:47.360 --> 02:35:48.460
It was perfect

02:35:48.580 --> 02:35:49.080
The lighting

02:35:49.700 --> 02:35:50.100
You know what?

02:35:50.520 --> 02:35:51.220
I'm going to offer one

02:35:51.290 --> 02:35:52.320
You guys have clearly never seen

02:35:52.370 --> 02:35:53.460
A Little Mermaid, right?

02:35:55.920 --> 02:35:57.140
I don't disagree with you

02:35:57.480 --> 02:35:57.700
About that

02:35:57.860 --> 02:35:59.160
But I have one to offer up

02:35:59.280 --> 02:36:00.440
That has a similar atmosphere

02:36:00.540 --> 02:36:01.240
That they pulled off

02:36:01.300 --> 02:36:01.780
And to this day

02:36:01.800 --> 02:36:02.380
I still don't know how

02:36:02.410 --> 02:36:03.120
They kind of did this

02:36:03.540 --> 02:36:04.200
And it's on my list

02:36:04.280 --> 02:36:04.980
So this is a spoiler

02:36:05.200 --> 02:36:05.900
Angel Heart

02:36:06.020 --> 02:36:06.600
Did you ever see that?

02:36:06.680 --> 02:36:36.300
Yes. Oh, yeah. Fucking movie is so fucking rainy and so fucking. Is that Val Kilmer? No, no, it's. Oh, Robert De Niro, Lisa Bonet. Mark Sonny taking Thunderheart. And there's a huge spoiler in there. You got. There's a huge spoiler. I don't want to tell you. That's actually one of my favorite 80s movies. Angel Heart. God, it's so fucking good. Oh, yeah. Wait a minute. Tell me who is in that one again. Did you say De Niro? Yeah, De Niro. Oh, fuck. I do remember that movie. Yeah.

02:36:36.700 --> 02:37:06.200
I mean, don't say who he plays. Yeah, no. But I mean, yeah, it takes place in like 19, early, late 1940s, New Orleans, New York. God, it's so fucking dark. I love all the movies Matt picked. I want to come over to your house and have movie night, Matt. Dude, I'll send you my address. I already have it. Just show up. I've got a projector. I'm trying to set it up in the backyard to watch movies, but the kids fall asleep too early.

02:37:06.280 --> 02:37:32.080
So it would just, you know, we'll do horror movies and action. I'm always up to four every night. So I've noticed I get these messages in the middle of the night. And normally that's something that comes from Jay because he's in California. But I'm like, because my phone is on vibrate, but I'm a very light sleeper. And I'm like, fucking Markisan again. I'll have a late night drunken notion and I'll put it out there. And I am always like, I'm going to get something from Markisan.

02:37:36.280 --> 02:38:06.220
I'm like, please be at least like midnight so I didn't fall asleep too early, you know, because I'm usually like the 1030 guy. I am the Knights. I forgot where we are. Yeah. John, maybe? It's all me. No, it's me. Matt just did it, didn't he? Yeah, yeah, yeah. See. Okay. My number one is about the greatest band ever. They have songs called Hell Hole, Big Bottom, Sex Farm, and Stone.

02:38:06.300 --> 02:38:35.880
Stonehenge, to name a few. Yes. This is Spinal Tap. How could that not be number one? You can't really dust for vomit. I mean. It's such a fine line between clever and stupid. Yeah. I mean, come on. Boston is not a college town. That's one of my favorite lines. It's not a college. I wouldn't worry about it. It's not a college town. And they may have indirectly been the impetus for where the podcast has gone.

02:38:35.920 --> 02:39:05.900
since we've all been on here. There's a character called Sir Dennis Eaton Hogg. And so say we tap into America. You know, one of the other one of my other favorite subtle lines in that is when Howard Shore comes through. I think it's Howard Shore. And it was like, oh, and he's the he's he's the he's the manager for who might be David Coverdale might be in it. I can't remember who the famous singers. Dr. Johnny Fever. And they talk about how how they played with him. And he's such a wanker. And they're playing like the sold out stadiums.

02:39:07.659 --> 02:39:34.600
He opened for us one time when we went on. Yeah, when we went on, people were still booing him. They were booing them. You know what I mean? They were just like trying to... They were still booing him. Sorry, go ahead. I'm not sure why this is not everyone's number one, but 1981 movie. Heavy metal. Animated.

02:39:35.920 --> 02:40:04.960
Good stuff. Actually, I thought it'd be aliens and boobs. How do you not like that? And heavy metal. It's heavy metal alien boobs. I did like it. I, uh, so just to get right past that since there you go. Uh, my, uh, my number one is obviously death chasm. I thought it was really, really one of my favorite and it's just funny and charming and sweet and everything. Too many good things about it. But I wanted to say, it's interesting to me that none of us chose the exorcist. That's a, that really strikes me now as a bit odd.

02:40:05.420 --> 02:40:35.380
And then also, on top of that... Maybe I did. Okay, fair enough. I do want to just also give an honorable mention, especially since Ray went for Lord of the Rings 2, the song remains the same. Zappa being the original Lord of the Rings band, you know what I mean? And then in that movie, Robert single-handedly storms the castle. John Bonham drives a drag racer. Jimmy lives in Scotland and cranks his weird little whatever thingy. Anyway, just that one's got to be...

02:40:35.420 --> 02:41:04.060
Whatever thingy. No, he's sitting at the site. He lives in Loch Ness. And it's true. I went to that place where he lived. And it's what you call a little hurdy-gurdy type deal. They sit next to the side of the... Which still could be dirty when you think about it. But we'll let that go. All right. I'm going to pass it off to you, George. All right. So this one has been mentioned and recently. And I don't have a clever line. So this is Spinal Tap. All right. There you go.

02:41:05.420 --> 02:41:35.320
Well, I blurted out my number one super early because I didn't know how the show worked. Nobody fucking told me. But I don't believe that you don't lead with your number one loudly and freak out. But my number one is John Carpenter's The Thing. It's just so metal, like in concept, in aesthetic, just all of it. It's obviously been so inspiring to so many musicians, either just like getting tattooed with that shit or wearing T-shirts or forming whole concept albums around it.

02:41:35.420 --> 02:42:04.640
But like it's just the shit like it's so obviously metal as fuck it really doesn't need to be argued. Hey Ray is not the the last two lines of the film the most chilling you know well how do we know if it's not you or me I guess we'll just we'll just wait a while and see and then it just fades out. There's a great well not great but there's a there's a thing I follow on Facebook called the vault of retro sci-fi or something like that do you follow that John too? Yes I do. Me too.

02:42:04.720 --> 02:42:34.680
Every once in a while they put some behind the scenes photos up there for some reason from the thing and I always love it when they do that and it's always like all them standing there smiling with one of the really fucked up props or something. Yeah. When I was a young lad and before I was old enough to see this movie when it was new there was Vangoria magazine. Oh yeah. And I remember opening up the issue that had the thing in there and I was like what the fuck. Because there's all these

02:42:34.740 --> 02:43:04.620
of like the, you know, the head and the, every, all the, you know, gory. Yeah. That stuff. It's one of my all time favorite movies. It reminds you how good they can do those practical effects. Yeah. You don't really need to do all this fucked up CGI. Now some CGI is really good. Sure. But I love those practical real world effects. And the thing is perfect. Even now they put out a recent edition where they, you know, they, they cleaned up the video and, uh, I don't know what they put.

02:43:04.720 --> 02:43:34.620
in some kind of HD. But even then, even when you can see all the details, it still looks amazing. You know, leading with the fact that I haven't seen it. Has anybody seen it? There's an original that was made in the 60s and the 50s. Is it good? Yeah. I mean, it's one of the few remakes of a science fiction film where I like both of them. Okay. So, by the way, I had a real hard time keeping another John Carpenter and Kurt Russell film off of this. But Big Trouble in Little China. Oh, yeah. Unreal how good it is.

02:43:34.700 --> 02:44:04.660
It was so good. It wasn't last year or the year before like the 30th anniversary or something. I went and it was in theaters and I went and it was cool to see it in an audience with people just love the movie and just laughing at everything. I had a blast. In Chicago. You know what Jack Burton says. Awesome. Yeah, there's so many really metal movies. So with this list, I guess I didn't mention it, but I just kind of just went off the top of my head. What do I think are metal?

02:44:06.479 --> 02:44:34.680
Yeah, me too, and it was weird. I tried to get a healthy mix of things that were like, I don't know, not just like, where's a movie with a ton of gratuitous violence? But I noticed that's where my mind went. Or really disturbing movies, but I'm like, no, metal means more than that. But I think we pulled from a lot of different places, and we have happy, epic sources, and we have more psychologically creepy sources and horror sources. And so, yeah. I think everyone

02:44:34.720 --> 02:44:43.160
It's a really cool movie. I agree. It's awesome. It was fun. All right. How about what we're listening to?

02:45:07.899 --> 02:45:34.680
Shall we start with Markisan again? Yeah. If you want. Okay, so I'm listening to this Immortal Bird album, Thrive on Neglect. I got the promo. I really love this album. It was one of my most anticipated when we did our top five a while back. I was the only one who had it on the most anticipated, I think. I really think this band has elevated their music on every level. It's more cohesive. It's more tuneful. I think the singer is pretty decent. I think this band's

02:45:34.700 --> 02:46:04.200
We're going to go places. Probably going to be on my year-end list. That's the first one. Then, Tumult. It's really great, Ray. I really love it. It's awesome. New Tumult. We got this early. I've spun this at least 10 times, and it doesn't seem like enough. That album is fucking awesome. And on your label, Ray, so you may need to hear it. Oh, there are buds. We're going to play with them next month. Awesome. Their new record is fucking crazy good.

02:46:04.400 --> 02:46:33.660
Where are you guys playing? We're going to play Steel and Bonefest in Pittsburgh with Two Mold, Horrendous, and Superstition. Wow. Oh, man. That's a lineup. That may be worth the trip. It's torture. When is it? Like a 20-minute kind of a showcase on July the 20th. I'm there the week before. Well. Sorry. Let's see. Un-Coltsblood split. I got the record in the mail.

02:46:34.420 --> 02:47:00.160
put out one of my favorite records last year. So it was cool to see them release a new track. It's 21 minutes long. I wasn't familiar with Colts Blood, but I really like that song too. And it's cool because not only do you get a split, I feel like it's not very cohesive, but with this one, it's really cool. And I read that it was a tribute to grief, the final act of love. And I just feel like it works really well together. It's nice on vinyl. I think John has that one too, actually.

02:47:02.560 --> 02:47:32.460
Viner, Realms of Time. It's a really solid, riff-driven traditional metal. It's heavy, catchy throughout. I haven't heard them before, but it's been in that. Idle Hands, I think I mentioned this on our website. Super unique, emotive blend of heavy metal, goth rock, and new wave. It's really fun. I think the songs are very memorable throughout. Frozen Soul,

02:47:32.540 --> 02:48:01.280
encased in ice. It's a moody death metal demo with chilly wind sounds that are throughout the demo. It sounds like it was recorded in some dude's bedroom, but you can tell that they're very talented, so I think they're going to be a death metal band to watch. A shit ton of yellow eyes, because the new album, Rare Ceiling, drops in a few days, actually. I think it's the 28th. Yeah. So right before the end. But they're probably my favorite black metal band.

02:48:01.680 --> 02:48:24.580
going right now for like the last few years because um they always sound adventurous and new to me every album and then i've been uh i've been listening to this one album that we got like three months ago we can't talk about it hasn't been officially announced and i think i know every song lyric by heart on the album i know you guys know what i'm talking about ray doesn't know but you guys know

02:48:28.619 --> 02:48:31.880
Ray's very secretive with her shit so I'm gonna get some little secretive here

02:48:32.160 --> 02:48:33.260
little down low

02:48:36.680 --> 02:48:37.440
all right Matt

02:48:38.540 --> 02:48:41.220
the one thing Mark's on I'll add about yellow eyes I feel like they sound

02:48:42.060 --> 02:48:45.660
modern but I feel like at times they sound like they're straight out of like a 70s horror flick

02:48:46.220 --> 02:48:51.100
in a good way and I would agree I think they're one of the best black metal bands out there

02:48:52.739 --> 02:49:20.160
Speaking of black metal, I've been listening to a black metal band from Norway called Nordjevil. It came out this year, but quite a while ago, Necrogenesis. Also a band from Baku, Death Metal, Goat Ripper, and their album is called Vicious Structure of the Crucified. Finding the New Immortal Bird Fabulous, Thrive on Neglect. Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan. Thank you.

02:49:20.180 --> 02:49:49.960
Yeah, I couldn't pronounce that. Thank you. Well, um, new tumult planetary clairvoyance. And then, uh, I have a playlist going, but this is basically all the bands at Valken. So I can actually kind of prepare to see them. So I actually know what, you know, I don't, essentially I go there and I miss out on good stuff. Cause I didn't take the time to learn. And then, um, so my wife, her and I are actually going to go to a, I wouldn't call it a full metal show, but we're going to a metal show.

02:49:50.180 --> 02:50:19.860
And she wanted to get a t-shirt. And so we started looking at metal t-shirts and she came across, actually, I came across a shirt by cattle decapitation. And on the back of it, it said bullshit. And it was capitalized to be a reference to the movie It. And I believe it was a cow, a zombie cow shooting out a clown. And needless to say, I've just been, it was, I mean, I can never get enough cattle decapitation as there is, but then to see that t-shirt and the amazement of how glorious it was, I've just been spending cattle decapitation.

02:50:20.200 --> 02:50:49.920
Can I just add cattle defecation? Yeah, fair enough. You know, their new record is in the can too, by the way, Matt. Yeah. Sweet. If the last two, and I'm sure they have plenty of great things before that, but if the last two or anything to judge by, it would be a good time. When I listened to a podcast that Travis was on with the singer from Cryptopsy, and he had talked about working with Dave Oterra, and yeah, I'm very much looking forward to it. Yeah.

02:50:52.399 --> 02:50:54.080
All right, John.

02:50:55.540 --> 02:50:55.660
Okay.

02:50:57.320 --> 02:51:00.100
Just saw this band on Bandcamp, I guess Friday.

02:51:00.580 --> 02:51:01.720
Got into and listened to it a lot.

02:51:01.800 --> 02:51:03.040
A band called Glare of the Sun.

02:51:04.200 --> 02:51:06.960
I think this is called Thea.

02:51:07.080 --> 02:51:07.980
I don't know how to pronounce it.

02:51:08.000 --> 02:51:12.580
But anyway, it's a second release from an Austrian, I don't know, Sludge Doomy band.

02:51:13.180 --> 02:51:13.520
It's cool.

02:51:13.620 --> 02:51:14.120
I like it.

02:51:14.800 --> 02:51:17.160
The New Memoriam, Requiem for Mankind.

02:51:17.400 --> 02:51:18.220
We know all about them.

02:51:19.300 --> 02:51:47.780
Will Be Happy. Been listening to Nucleus Entity quite a bit lately. Have been spinning the new Pelican a lot. I hate to say, oh, a band's back to their original sound, but it is kind of nice to hear some songs sounding like some previous albums from the early days. It's heavy, John. Yeah, it is. The new Tumult, which will be out soon enough, and obviously the new Immortal Bird. All good albums.

02:51:49.940 --> 02:51:51.400
Cool. Well.

02:51:53.500 --> 02:52:13.680
So something happened with my iTunes because when we get the stuff in the mega promo box, it's all MP3s, not flack. So I dump it all into my iTunes. And for some reason, iTunes decided like, oh, no, go fuck yourself. This is stuff that's not been released yet. So I'm not going to upload it into iTunes yet.

02:52:14.040 --> 02:52:43.500
So I did have a whole bunch of the new stuff like Immortal Bird. And so I've only listened to it once. And then I had to go back and listen to the pre-release songs 1, 3, and 4 on Immortal Bird. So I know those songs very well. So they're great, right? Thanks. And so anyway, and then my buddies in the band Sick Deer, which I sent the link to you guys.

02:52:44.040 --> 02:53:13.220
They just released a new album, Awake Proceeds. It's kind of like a death black metal band. They play Atlas all the time. We played at the Pinch. I can't remember the other venues we've played at, but we have played at the Pinch. Yeah, the basement? Yeah. I run a venue that you can play at.

02:53:14.801 --> 02:53:43.980
Oh, okay. You should play there. Let's do that. Do you know Hassan from Ripping Headaches? Yeah, I do. He books at our venue almost, I wouldn't say exclusively, but a lot. Atlas Brew Works. They're the most metal brewer in the country. I had no idea that I was in the presence of greatness. I checked out the tour.

02:53:44.060 --> 02:54:14.020
and the closest you guys are coming is Pittsburgh. So you should play there. We do have to do a full East Coast tour sooner rather than later. Contact us on or just contact me or whatever and play my brewery. And then the other one, I think Jay sent this to me, Legion of the Damned, Slaves of the Shallowed, something. Oh yeah, I've heard that. That's a good one. I think Jay described it as early creator. I'm really liking that. And then

02:54:14.040 --> 02:54:42.360
What's a twist? But the first song could have come off Endless Pain or anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I bought that on Bandcamp. I like it. And then the new Memoriam, which is another one of those things that we got in the promo, and then iTunes decided, like, nope, you can't play that right now. So when it was actually released, it was not on Bandcamp, so I had to buy it on iTunes. So, Memoriam, Requiem for Mankind, we already talked about it, and that's it. Cool, I'll go through mine pretty quick.

02:54:44.040 --> 02:55:14.000
It's fucking great, so good. Entombed, because that live record that came out, and then I noticed on John's Bandcamp feed that he got the full dynamic range of a couple of them, and I went and picked those up, so I've been listening to Entombed a whole lot lately. That Legion of the Damned record is really resonating with me. You guys can judge me if you want, but the Hollywood Vampires record is really cool. That's the Alice Cooper's band. Yeah, I need to listen to that. It's surprisingly good, dude. It's actually kind of eerie and weird and full of kind of cool shit.

02:55:14.420 --> 02:55:44.020
I mean I hate to say it but Johnny Depp is on it which so take that with a grain of salt but he just plays guitar so whatever but and that so I could hold it at arm's length but I tell you I've enjoyed listening to it um Enthroned I like that new one a lot Pelican I've been listening to um that's everything except for I will also mention in my purpose they save it to last we've played it kind of cool Ray but we actually really kind of fucking like your band a lot on this podcast like

02:55:44.040 --> 02:56:14.000
I'm not joking like when episodes came out we were all really really fucking into it it made it on pretty much everybody's end of year list I'm pretty sure this thing's gonna be true about this new one it is for me so we try not to geek out around you but also you've just been super fun to talk to and stuff so like we were thrilled you came and I have been listening to a lot of your record I really like your new record a lot well done thank you so much it like definitely took us a little while and we were apprehensive about how long it took but I think that it's

02:56:14.779 --> 02:56:43.920
It's gonna do okay, right? Like, we super appreciate the support a lot. Your opinions actually matter to me, to a degree. No, it really is. To a degree. No, well, we talk about your band when you're not here. Let's put it that way. That's how much we like it. So. I really appreciate that. Honestly, like, sometimes it's very easy to just kind of get isolated and feel like absolutely nobody gives a fuck about what you do, because the internet is very fickle, and a lot of what we do,

02:56:44.000 --> 02:57:13.980
takes place over those channels. So thank you. That's really nice. You know, I'll add one more thing, and that is that I, bear in mind, there are things coming out like Carcass probably this year and some other stuff. I don't think there was anything that we all, like, we get sent, Georgie will tell us, like, what's in the box. We have this box where we get promos. And I think Immortal Bird was the one that we were all like, when you sent it, we were like, all right, guys, I got it, because we were all waiting for it. So good stuff. Awesome. Which also means we will also go out and pay

02:57:14.020 --> 02:57:43.980
for it even though we got it for free indeed we will yeah i already pre-ordered the vinyl yeah so did i that's a rule on this podcast you got that like yellowy i did of course yeah it looks cool that looks cool which by the way did you pre-order oh uh the two mold Markisan yes i got the it's got to choose your color there too yeah yeah super rare one yeah it was like 100 copies 150 copies cool i did not pre-order because they're playing atlas next month

02:57:48.080 --> 02:58:13.940
They're gonna blow up this year. I wish I didn't pre-order because I would have bought it at Bucket of Blood when they're doing the listening party on July 5th. I think you're gonna have the limited version there too, right, Ray? I think so. I mean, they're selling their copies there. We're not selling our artist copies there, so it doesn't super help us to buy it there. We're just gonna go there and hang out. But I am, for every, for the thousands of Chicago people who are listening,

02:58:14.060 --> 02:58:43.620
I am going to be selling artwork there to benefit the crisis at the border. Hopefully, for charity, for several different organizations, including the ACLU and other people who are trying to make that shit better. I'm going to sell a bunch of art. We can raise money at that event. That's great. Cool. I guess I'm going to start my list by piggybacking on Jay's ass kissing.

02:58:43.980 --> 02:59:13.620
and say that I've been listening to the new Immortal Bird album. I don't generally pre-order things on Bandcamp because they tend to not release when they're supposed to. But I did, in fact, pre-order the album on Bandcamp. So just adding my two cents on that. Let's see what episode I got here. Bewitcher, Under the Witching Cross. This is the second album of Oregon Black Speed. It's kind of like Motorhead meets Venom kind of thing.

02:59:14.000 --> 02:59:43.560
I owe you my opinion on that because you suggested to me and I dig it. Cool. I thought it sounded like your kind of stuff. That's Jay stuff for sure. The new EP from Ingested, Call of the Void, UK death metal band. I got into their last album last year through Will and I really like that so I picked this up. Repugnance, Shrouds of Deceit. It's the first death metal album from another band from Malta.

02:59:43.600 --> 03:00:11.120
That's two in one episode. That's weird. Malta. Malta. Wow. Will, you'll be happy to know that I picked up the Throne Hammer album, Usurper of the Oaken Throne. They could probably trim a little bit of fat off that one, but it's still pretty cool. I'm still on song two. Yeah, yeah. It's been playing since yesterday. It was a little slow, it's true. Yeah, there's a lot of extra space on that album, but it's still cool.

03:00:13.600 --> 03:00:43.560
Planetary Clairvoyance, third album, and I'm digging that as well. And finally, Vortex of End, Arden's Führer. The J on my shoulder popped up and said question mark on the end. I'm sorry. It's because of the spelling. Führer is spelled F-V-R-O-R. Anyway, it's a French black death metal band, and it's...

03:00:43.600 --> 03:01:13.440
Cool. I just picked it up a couple days ago, and I've been trying to get through it. I've only been through it once, but I'm enjoying it so far. Ray, what are you listening to? Goodness. Different stuff from you guys. Some of the same stuff. Obviously, I've been spinning that new tomb mold, and it's sick. They don't need my help. They're doing fine. Let's see. No, I've been listening to the new Dreadnought. Oh, yeah, that's nice. I forget exactly what it's called. It has a slight new... Isn't it just a merge?

03:01:13.580 --> 03:01:43.560
Yes, Emergence. Yes, Emergence. I think it's really beautiful. I love what that band does. I love how much piano and keyboard is in that band. It never seems forced. They're just super unique. I appreciate them a lot. Kelly Schilling is an absolute fucking musical genius. I admire her tremendously. The new Warforged album is fucking sick. Usually when a band has a ton of guest artists, I'm kind of like, ah! And it is still

03:01:43.580 --> 03:02:11.780
Gimmicky, but it's totally awesome. Every guest rules. Our guitarist has a guest solo on it, but that's not the only person. There's tons of sick people on it. It's just a really well-done record. They obviously put a shitload of thought into it. And they're going to play with us in Chicago. Hooray. What else? I haven't listened to the new Pelican yet, but I think I'm really going to like it based on what all of you were saying. Really good.

03:02:13.600 --> 03:02:43.560
a massive disappointment. Don't even worry about it, you guys. What else I've been listening to that's new? I am pretty bad about listening to new things. I want to listen to that new Superstition record, too, that just came out. Oh, the new Moontooth album, Crux, is very, very, very fucking sick. They're a super unique band. They use a ton of different styles, and I'd hesitate to just be like, they're metal, because they

03:02:43.580 --> 03:03:13.560
They are metal, but there's so much more to them than that. They have a very proggy leaning, but it's still really catchy. The production is awesome. There's so many dynamics going on. They're a very special band, and they have huge mainstream potential, which could be really cool for them. They're killing it right now, and they're really, really awesome. Yeah, what's driving me nuts, Ray, is they're playing my brewery, I think, on Friday, and I will not be there because I'll be on vacation. They're so good, and they are so

03:03:13.580 --> 03:03:15.600
They're so good live. They're unreal live.

03:03:16.340 --> 03:03:16.680
They're special.

03:03:16.680 --> 03:03:16.980
I heard that.

03:03:17.900 --> 03:03:18.560
That album's great.

03:03:19.320 --> 03:03:22.680
I think of it more as rock, but I think it's really good.

03:03:23.700 --> 03:03:24.820
Yeah, it's so good.

03:03:25.780 --> 03:03:25.960
Yeah.

03:03:26.340 --> 03:03:26.660
Awesome.

03:03:26.800 --> 03:03:27.020
Nice.

03:03:27.570 --> 03:03:28.740
I like how Ray did her homework.

03:03:28.870 --> 03:03:30.520
She was on all of these categories.

03:03:30.520 --> 03:03:32.040
But she didn't want to do her homework.

03:03:32.110 --> 03:03:34.020
She was very disappointed with doing homework.

03:03:34.170 --> 03:03:39.340
It was thankful, but I was like, you gotta at least listen to a couple of these songs

03:03:39.430 --> 03:03:40.580
or figure your shit out.

03:03:41.239 --> 03:04:10.760
I was like, I'll just try to be candid and on the fly. And I was like, you haven't been listening to anything. You've never seen a movie in your life. Who's Sacred Reich? You don't know Taukras. I don't know anything. So I just kind of like. Well, you did well. And you were more prepared than we ever try to be. So we'll do. Just to remind me of shit. So we are nearing the end of our time together. Yes, we are here at the end. Thank you for joining us.

03:04:11.399 --> 03:04:40.780
Everybody needs to go out and preorder the new Immortal Bird album, Thrive on Neglect. Bandcamp's a good place to do that. Is there anywhere else people should go? I think Bandcamp or the 20 Buckspin website is the way to go. As we start announcing shows, you can pick up copies from us directly. Eventually you'll be able to get the record on our Bandcamp, I assume. We can talk about that later, Dave. But for now, 20 Buckspin is handling all that. Although we are having a little merch

03:04:40.800 --> 03:05:10.780
sale reinvigoration attempt on our band camp so if you want to buy yourself some clothing and get a fun custom note from me you can do that on our band camp if you want to buy the new record you can go on the 20 bucks spin band camp awesome are you promising unicorn stickers is that what i saw yeah no that's just exactly what she's promising i have cute baby animal stickers i think there's a piggy a frog a kitty a puppy and a panda so um it's kind of the luck of

03:05:10.820 --> 03:05:15.880
the draw, whatever I'm feeling, but all orders do come with fun stickers and little handwritten notes.

03:05:16.660 --> 03:05:19.580
Where can people see your cat? That's the most important.

03:05:19.740 --> 03:05:21.160
I don't know what other stuff is.

03:05:21.960 --> 03:05:26.080
People can follow my cats on social media at Winstaham.

03:05:26.340 --> 03:05:30.180
That's W-Y-N-N-S-T-A-H-A-M.

03:05:30.420 --> 03:05:33.480
H-A-M, because it's Winnie and Ham on Instagram.

03:05:34.320 --> 03:05:34.880
Winstaham.

03:05:35.520 --> 03:05:40.320
They only have like 60 followers, and I post like once every several weeks.

03:05:40.400 --> 03:06:10.380
But that's where people can see my cat. It's like Brangelina of cats. I'm kind of buying into this whole Metalhead's podcast thing. We should at least have an album on the Facebook page. We probably ought to get that URL and redirect it to the site. Okay, well, I'm like, this is boiling with me. Well, I say again, it was a joy to have you. I haven't had this much fun since we had Matt Moss from

03:06:10.420 --> 03:06:37.200
That was great. It was just great. He came on and stayed the whole time. You came on and stayed the whole time and had fun with us and stuff. We really appreciate it. Yay! Well, I had so much fun and it was a lovely way to spend a humid Sunday evening several feet away from Marcus. Yes, indeed. You guys will have to match that up. Do the math sometime. I'll see you at the listening party at Bucket of Blood. I'm planning on going. I'm planning on going as well. Yeah, I hope so.

03:06:40.420 --> 03:06:44.340
All right. Well, thank you, everyone. And we'll see y'all next time.

03:07:22.939 --> 03:07:40.320
Hey there, I was just reaching out to you because I know you're a business opportunity minded person. So I wanted to share with you a program where we do all the advertising, lead follow up and sales calls for you. And then we split each share with you 50-50. The average sale will earn you $3,500.

03:07:41.119 --> 03:08:10.380
So what's important about this is that you can earn a full-time income with just a couple of sales a month. So it's a very realistic opportunity. Just to give you an idea of what you can do here, I actually earn between $50,000 and $100,000 each month. And on my website, I'm going to show you my recent income proof just so you can see that I'm not making these numbers up. So hopefully you can sense this is a legitimate opportunity that's worth your time checking out. And to do so, you can just go to

03:08:13.280 --> 03:08:22.980
RetireNowSystem.com. Once again, that's RetireNowSystem.com. Thanks, and I look forward to connecting with you very soon.
