00:00:16.420 --> 00:00:20.900
Hello and welcome back to MetalDisciple.com's Metal Heads Podcast.

00:00:21.590 --> 00:00:24.980
My name is George. And I'm Puke. And this is Episode 3.

00:00:25.760 --> 00:00:54.120
So over the course of the last few weeks, we've slowly been gaining some listeners. Very slowly. Very few listeners. But we're getting there a little bit at a time. We're getting there, exactly. As long as someone's listening. The reporting that I look at to see how many people are listening to the podcast also tells me where in the world these listeners are. And for the first two episodes, everyone that was listening to this podcast was in the United States. Okay.

00:00:54.240 --> 00:01:23.620
This past week, we picked up a couple international listeners. That's cool. We had one listener from Canada, one listener from Mexico, and yesterday we picked up one from Sweden. He's probably more metal than you and I both. Probably. So, if you happen to listen to the last episode and you're from Canada, Mexico, or Sweden, hi! Hi! Thank you for listening. Thanks for listening. Hope you're enjoying it.

00:01:24.240 --> 00:01:54.020
How are you this week? I'm okay. You know, we touched on it last week. The addiction to vinyl is starting to really take hold. It's like the vinyl plague. I'm really hooked. Awesome. I took another trip back to our downtown rock and roll graveyard the other day with the intention to not get anything. I just want to look. I just want to touch.

00:01:54.240 --> 00:02:24.000
I just want to smell the old vinyl. Brows. Peruse. And I walked away with six or seven purchases. To let you know that the addiction is really deep-seated. I didn't text this the other day because I wanted to hold it for the podcast. I'm not a fan of these guys. I don't listen to these guys. I thought it would sound good on vinyl. I bought an Iron Butterfly record. In Agata De Vita? Yes. I've been looking at that one in the bin and I'm like, hmm, I should get that. Just because. In Agata.

00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:52.900
Exactly. Just because I thought on vinyl, that would sound awesome. Did it? Yeah. It did. That's cool. What else did you get? I got Slayer Seasons in the Abyss. Right on. That was sealed. I picked up Wrath by Lamb of God. Wrath, yeah. I picked up, I can't remember right now, I picked up two Rainbow albums. I got Long Live Rock and Roll. Nice.

00:02:54.240 --> 00:03:23.880
after Dio left, Down to Earth. I like that track, Since You've Been Gone. Since You've Been Gone. That was a good song. And I got Judas Priest, Screaming. Screaming for Vengeance. Nice. That's one I can really think of right now. I walked away with another five or six. Sure. Awesome. With the intent of not buying anything. You know, one thing I almost forgot about this past week was the fact that it's been one year since the passing of Jeff Hanneman.

00:03:24.220 --> 00:03:53.720
Yes, it has. And that's a great point. In his passing, I wanted to, after you get your thought out here, ask you a question about him in relation to him and Carrie in the band. Okay. Yeah, I was coming home from work yesterday and listening to liquid metal in the car. And Jose, he just started losing this shit. He's just going, I can't even replicate it without shredding my voice. But he's just chanting Slayer with the most horrendously harsh screech.

00:03:54.240 --> 00:04:24.200
and over and over and over and then they proceeded to play a bunch of Slayer and I was like is it really already a year I mean that makes sense but I thought it was at least another week out but apparently not I didn't even think I thought it was sometime in the fall but obviously it's been a year the question that I thought of when I was looking on Twitter and that story came up is I hear back and forth talk about to you who is more Slayer

00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:53.820
the guitar side of it. When you think of Slayer and you think of the riffs and you think of the songwriting and stuff, who do you think of more? Well, it depends on the aspect of the song. In terms of riffs, I think Jeff Hanneman with his South of Heaven style riffs are, you know, that's what I like to hear from Slayer. But when you talk about lead work, you know, Cary King just shreds it. Yeah. Okay. I just wanted to get your take on that because I hear, you know, various,

00:04:54.340 --> 00:05:24.200
Opinions on that. Sure. Well, you know, it takes both of those together to make an incredible slayer. And of course, Tom and Drummer of the Week, whoever that might be. So last night, I found myself in a whirlwind, swept away, and suddenly at a Seven Dust show. Yes. And I have to admit, I've never really been much of a Seven Dust fan. I have a couple other albums, and I like how they sound in terms of a more

00:05:24.260 --> 00:05:29.280
I mean they I think they're more than competent they're very good at what they do the

00:05:29.420 --> 00:05:54.200
singers great Morgan's a killer drummer the everybody is good but it's just not really my style so I don't really listen to it much and so I'm not familiar I couldn't you couldn't pick a song I remember I when you first sent me that text yesterday totally blindsided me yeah but you're at a seven-thus show especially you know given you and shows during the week sometimes you know it makes for a long day yeah

00:05:54.220 --> 00:06:23.100
When you wake up early for work. So go into a band that I know you're not the biggest fan of. Yeah, I know. I'm familiar with the song title Black. Yeah. But I wouldn't know it to hear. That's why when I texted you, if they played four or five songs, you didn't know. But I went with a friend of mine who is also in a band. Because of him, we got a little bit of the rock star treatment. You know, we didn't need a ticket. We walked in. The owner of the club ushered us in and, you know, lifted the velvet rope.

00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:53.180
the velvet rope and let us in and then took us to the bar and got us free beers I'm like I could I could get used to this yeah so then you know we got to watch the show and at that point I started texting Buke I'm like Buke is a huge seven dust fan I've seen them 10 12 times and so I'm like hey hey hey let me just shoot him a text look at this I'm at the seven dust show now I have a question about that the picture you sent the crowd looked like was pretty large oh it was pretty full and that was you know

00:06:53.200 --> 00:07:23.160
The one thing I wanted to ask you today is I know after their Animosity album, to me that was their peak. Right. If you ask me, I know they had some lineup changes after that and members left and then some came back. But hearing that the crowd was still packed was a good sign. Yeah. Because I didn't realize if Seven Dust was still relevant. Right. I know their albums still sell pretty well for what records do these days. Sure. And I should note it was an acoustic show, which is a little bit different than, you know,

00:07:23.200 --> 00:07:26.420
You know, obviously a typical set, but it still brought the people out.

00:07:26.520 --> 00:07:27.320
Was there an opening act?

00:07:27.440 --> 00:07:28.060
There was not.

00:07:28.420 --> 00:07:33.140
When we got there, they were already on stage, but I think maybe they might have been in their first song.

00:07:33.980 --> 00:07:35.220
They played for a while.

00:07:35.700 --> 00:07:36.480
I mean, maybe an hour.

00:07:36.660 --> 00:07:40.960
I wasn't really keeping track, but they played for quite a while, and then they left.

00:07:41.580 --> 00:07:48.280
And they took an intermission of, it had to be at least a half hour, and then they came back and played a whole bunch more songs.

00:07:49.260 --> 00:08:19.160
And what was interesting, the only two songs that I recognized all night were cover songs. They did a cover of Nine Inch Nails Hurt, which got me really excited. And they did a Stevie Nicks song. And I know the song. I'm not enough of a fan of Stevie Nicks to know the name of the song, but it's that, like the White Wing Dove song. Yeah, I've heard of it. So I was like, oh, that was interesting. But during that intermission, my friend knew one of the sound guys because they had toured together.

00:08:19.300 --> 00:08:49.120
And so that guy moved us up to the side of the stage where the soundboards and stuff were so we could get a better look and that was pretty impressive. Cool. So how many sets did they actually do that you were there for? I know you said you came late, but did they maybe play five songs, ten songs, take a break? I don't really know how many songs they played. You know, like I said, they played for maybe an hour, took a break, and then played for like maybe another 45 minutes to an hour. Okay. Just kind of like an evening.

00:08:49.280 --> 00:09:19.080
with Seven Dust type of thing. Yeah, yeah. And then afterwards, they had a meet and greet with fans. We were hoping to meet the band just because my friend has played with them before. But because of the meet and greet, we didn't feel like sticking around. Which to remind any fans of Seven Dust out there, I know this is a more metal podcast, but Seven Dust did release a new album a couple weeks ago. Yeah, sounds pretty good. Yeah, if anyone's out there interested in that. Yeah, that new Seven Dust is called Time Travelers and Bonfires. Okay.

00:09:19.280 --> 00:09:48.240
All right, well, let's see what releases we've got coming out this week. Not as many as last week, but a couple of interesting ones. Hammerheart Records is re-releasing the first Cobalt album, War Metal. No idea who they are. You know who they are. I have played them for you. Their third album, Djinn, came out back in 2009, and I discovered it, I don't know, a year or two ago. Picked it up on vinyl more recently. It's an American black metal. It's really kind of raw, but interesting.

00:09:49.260 --> 00:10:19.200
I don't know if I want to say progressive, but it's not your standard black metal, but it's really cool. So I'm looking forward to hearing this reissue. Cradle of Filth, perhaps you've heard of them. Mordgrim is re-releasing their third demo called Total Fucking Darkness. If you've ever listened to Cradle of Filth, you might not recognize them here. It's definitely a different sound than you would be used to. Almost a little bit of death metal in there. There's Danny vocals that do sound.

00:10:24.520 --> 00:10:49.240
It originally came out in 1993, but next up is a band from Denmark called Pet the Preacher. These guys are stoner metal band. Sorry, I'm choking on my coffee. Pet the Preacher. I heard of them on their first album, which came out a year or two ago. I kind of dig it, so I haven't really given a listen to this one yet, but it's coming out this week, so I'm definitely going to give it a

00:10:49.280 --> 00:11:18.580
With a title like that, I have to check it out. And the last band of note this week is an American sort of doom band called Vestal Claret. Their third album, The Cult of Vestal Claret, is coming out this week as well. It's got more old-school metal sound, so it's kind of like old-school metal with maybe a little doom thrown in there. It's interesting. You should check it out. See, this is what you always do to me. You always hit me with so much.

00:11:19.140 --> 00:11:48.520
Good Music. Good Music. Every week. I just can't keep up. Yeah. I love it. I love leaving here with new records to go check out. And then it just piles up and piles up. That's why I do this. It's worth noting that since I'm always coming across these new bands, I don't get a lot of time to go back and listen to old things. And so I find a new band and I'm like, this album is great. And then I listen to it and I listen to it for a couple of weeks.

00:11:49.140 --> 00:12:18.840
And then I might not listen to it for another couple of years because I'm so busy bringing in all the new albums that I just don't get to it. And that's that makes me sad sometimes. But once in a while, I get to go back and just dig through all the great things that I find. And it's an orgy of metal. I think that, you know, in our friendship that with me, that carries a lot of weight that when I hear something that gets you excited and it hooks you for a while and you really listen to it for a while, that to me gets me excited because, hey, if you're not listening to it,

00:12:18.880 --> 00:12:46.480
Not saying it's bad, but if you're listening to it and really continuing to listen to it for an extended period of time, that's something I really need to check out. And part of why I do the website and the podcast and everything else related to this stuff is that I enjoy introducing you to new bands. And I'm not satisfied with just you. I want to introduce everybody to new bands. So that's why I do what I do. Yep. So what have you been listening to this week?

00:12:48.900 --> 00:13:18.660
Graveyard the other day to start perusing the collection. Chris, the owner, extremely nice guy, is always playing music. He always has something playing. He was playing that Sleep last time we were in there. He was. And this time, he put on this record. He had first had on, and I'm going to find this, he had a Black Sabbath bootleg live album. Their California jam. Oh, really? You've seen the pictures. Apparently, it's them in the park. There's like a rainbow or something behind them. You may have seen the car. Okay.

00:13:20.800 --> 00:13:48.840
I've seen it on YouTube before, but it's a killer live bootleg. So that's what he started on. But that's what I'm listening to this week. He then transferred to this band by the name of Saviors. And their album, Death's Procession. It's a throwback 70s style, 80s style, sludgy kind of early metal sound. Kind of mixes in some high on fire, but not

00:13:48.900 --> 00:14:18.740
as harsh as the vocalist is in that. But that type of sound, when the guitars are, you know, real 70s sounding, apparently it was recorded on analog equipment, so it sounds even better on vinyl. It just blew me away. So I have gone out, and I've been listening to it on Spotify. When I get some more money, I'll probably check it out from, I'll probably buy it, because I found it on vinyl for like $12. Apparently they have three albums out.

00:14:18.860 --> 00:14:48.840
two or three but this is a release I think that came out last year Savior's Death's Procession yeah I've heard of those guys I actually have two albums by them accelerated living and into Abaddon yes cool well I think that's gonna inspire me to go back and check them out again so for the last week or so I've been really into this new band called men without armies featuring Brennan Dillon on guitar your review you posted online was excellent thank you excellent I've been

00:14:48.860 --> 00:15:18.840
I've been talking to Brennan a lot over the last couple of weeks and he's a pretty interesting guy he went to the Berkeley College of Music he was the rock guitarist of the year for the Los Angeles Music Awards and let me tell you he shreds wow they're getting ready to release a six song self-titled EP I talked to Brennan this morning actually and he said it'll probably be out in the next month or so I'll keep you posted on that Brennan was kind enough to allow me to play a couple songs from the EP

00:15:18.880 --> 00:15:23.320
on this podcast today. So, without further ado, let's check out the track

00:15:23.530 --> 00:15:24.640
The Devil's Bride.

00:15:54.640 --> 00:15:58.420
You're looking through the night.

00:15:59.060 --> 00:16:05.540
I can see the other side of you through the light.

00:16:06.100 --> 00:16:12.780
Where all the blood flows white.

00:16:14.060 --> 00:16:19.040
Is there been nights of burning night?

00:16:19.640 --> 00:16:31.740
Will you, will you come back home? Do you know too long? Will you, will you come back home?

00:17:14.780 --> 00:17:19.620
There I saw you looking for

00:17:19.640 --> 00:17:43.820
I saw you walking on through to the other side, to the fireside, planning to become the devil's bride.

00:17:49.620 --> 00:17:54.880
To the other side, to the fireside,

00:17:55.260 --> 00:17:57.760
Cliding to become the devil's pride.

00:17:57.820 --> 00:18:01.680
Will you come back home?

00:18:02.460 --> 00:18:04.280
Didn't they long too long?

00:18:04.820 --> 00:18:09.160
Will you come back home?

00:18:20.680 --> 00:18:41.920
So can I ask you a question about him real quick? What got me in your review that you posted on the site this past week? You said it really meant a lot to you and he took the time to know you by name, know the site, and really reach out to you. Yeah, so many people just send links to their album or

00:18:41.960 --> 00:19:11.420
even just put stuff in the mail. I just got a CD the other day in the mail. No promo sheet. No nothing. Just a CD and an envelope. I'm like, well, thanks. What am I supposed to do with this? People just don't take the time to create a personal relationship with somebody that's going to be writing or speaking critically of their album. Does that make any sense? You want to build the best relationship with this person that you can so that they feel favorably towards you. It's almost like walking into a restaurant.

00:19:11.960 --> 00:19:40.080
You know, having the server or the waitress treat you kindly. Yeah. And I get so much music, whether it's in the mail or downloads or whatever. It's just dumped on you. It's not personal. There was no time taken there. You were just a quick web address and email. Boom. Send it off. Just like carpet bombing. Send it out. Yep. Dear reviewer, here's our stuff. Please listen to it.

00:19:41.940 --> 00:20:11.740
How am I supposed to feel? I mean, I don't have time to even listen to all of them. So you're more likely going to get listened to and reviewed if you start a conversation with me than if you just dump some music on me and I may not even ever listen to it. So anyway, Brennan is really good about that. And because of that, I was interested to hear what he had going on. And when I listened to it, I loved it. The first song that I listened to, The Devil's Bride, very catchy.

00:20:11.960 --> 00:20:41.220
song. It's not as heavy as a lot of the stuff that we listen to most of the time, but I'm a sucker for a good hook. So something about that hook was just, it gets stuck in my head. I love it. And when I listened to some of the other songs like NYC, the first track on the EP, the guy's vocals just sound, they, it took me like a minute to figure out who it reminded me of. And I was like, this sounds like Chuck Billy, like on like the legacy or the new order, you know, early Testament that clenched it for me. I definitely like these guys.

00:20:41.420 --> 00:21:11.400
I could tell you were excited in the video. We'll be closing out the show with another song from the EP called Metal Rain. So stick around at the end and make sure you give that a listen. Last week we started a new segment where we talk about our favorite albums from a particular band. Last week we did our top three favorites from Iron Maiden. I figure after doing that we should really do our top three Judas Priest. What do you got for me? My number three is Defenders of the Faith. Nice. With tracks like Free Will Burning and some

00:21:11.440 --> 00:21:41.400
are gonna roll classic hello the sentinel yes also well covered by machine head extremely extremely well covered yes number two screaming for vengeance three man it's been a vengeance the title track yep just seals it up for me there and number one if there's with that if there's any doubt British steel that's kind of where I figured you would go that the album so I just getting it on vinyl a couple weeks ago start to finish

00:21:41.420 --> 00:22:11.140
In fact, I saw them on tour the last time. They played that album. I think they played the first six tracks or something. Killer. Killer. You know, Breaking the Law, Metal Gods. What's that? Rapid Fires on there, right? Yeah. Killer. I can't find the right words to sum that album up. But I think, you know. It's a classic. The history books itself sum that album up. It's one of the albums, if you're going to start with metal. Sure. That's one of the albums to start with. Right on.

00:22:11.660 --> 00:22:41.080
So my three and yours were in order again, weren't they? Yeah. Minor and no particular order. I chose to cover a time range. My first one is Defenders of the Faith. Why is that? That's because that was my first priest album. Okay. I got it on cassette, you know, shortly after it came out. And was that your first taste of hearing them? Yes. That was my very first priest was Defenders of the Faith when it first came out. Do you remember how you first heard of them? In Hit Parader magazine. Okay.

00:22:41.440 --> 00:23:11.380
Back in the day, there was this Iron Maiden versus Judas Priest feud. Oh, there was. Sort of like later there was Metallica and Megadeth. I don't know that there was particularly a feud between the bands, but it was more of a... Made up kind of thing. Fans, you know, Maiden's better, no Priest is better. It's just like, now we have Xbox versus PlayStation, guys. Yeah, we've really come a long way. So my next Priest album is Ram It Down. Does that surprise you? A little, because I'm not... I'm seeing where you're going. I'm not sure number one's going to be what I thought it was.

00:23:12.140 --> 00:23:39.220
The reason I went with Ram It Down is because one of my favorite all-time priest songs comes from that album. There's some mediocre material on that album, but Blood Red Skies. I love that song. So, guesses. What's my third album? I thought it was going to be British Steel. Hands down. I thought it was going to be. I didn't think there was no way it could be anything else. Well, see, I knew you were going to do British Steel. Did you?

00:23:41.440 --> 00:24:10.060
The Introduction to the Second Era of Priest. And ram it down, I would say is the third. The First Era of Priest, Sad Wings of Destiny. Thinking back on your reviews you did, sorry, during your 365 project, I think you had mentioned that album maybe in one of the days. Maybe. Or some reference to that. So it doesn't surprise me. Well, it does, but.

00:24:11.420 --> 00:24:40.840
It wasn't all that metal. It was still kind of, you know, rock. With Sad Wings of Destiny, we get The Ripper, Victim of Changes. And I just got this on vinyl recently and rediscovered the track Island of Dominations, the song that closes out the album. Very cool track. Sad Wings of Destiny. Check it out. Now, did you go back? Because that wasn't where you started. Was it you instantly started with Priest? And did you?

00:24:41.440 --> 00:25:10.140
Were you hooked on them? Well, like I said, it took me a little while to get into Defenders of the Faith because it was, for the time, it was pretty heavy. And I didn't quite know what to think of it when I heard, free will burn in. You know, I was like, hmm, what is this? You know, I've been listening to Twisted Sister and Dio and stuff like that. So it took me a little while. Do you think you would have been hooked more if you would have started on that? I don't know. That's a good question. We may never know. Yeah, we won't.

00:25:11.440 --> 00:25:40.900
I've got a topic that I've been meaning to bring up for the last few weeks, and we always run out of time. The Big Four. One of my pet peeves. Yes. How do you feel about the so-called Big Four? Well, as someone who was younger during the 80s, and was born in 83, when those bands were really coming up and making a name for themselves, I don't remember it.

00:25:41.440 --> 00:26:09.580
So the big four to me now is I guess what's kind of been put together by the media by the internet. Yeah it's kind of almost a promotional thing now I guess. To me I never you know saw I guess in a sense I never lived it when it was really happening. So my only big four now is the package tour the right the DVDs that you see the CDs that you see.

00:26:11.420 --> 00:26:40.080
You know Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax. Nope, nope, nope. Metallica. Wrong! Thanks for playing. But those that you see now as thrash. Gods. Yes. I can't question that. Because, you know, it's kind of what's been presented to me and, you know. Spoon fed to you. Yes. In the sense that, hey, they're almost kind of saying, these are the pioneers. These are the big four. Here they are. Well.

00:26:41.440 --> 00:27:09.740
So the big four, for that last person in the far corners of the earth that doesn't know the big four, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. I don't know why it peeves me so much. I mean, sure, they are the biggest four thrash bands. But when you talk about 80s thrash, it's an incomplete conversation unless you've got Overkill, Testament, and Exodus as part of that list. So I've always argued it should be the big seven.

00:27:11.440 --> 00:27:41.400
matters? Hell no. Does anybody care? Hell no. But that's the way I feel. Overkill is still making incredible thrash music. I'll admit, I've never been a big fan of them. I just got taking over on vinyl the other day. Such a killer album. Exodus, Bonded by Blood, Cornerstone of Thrash, and Testament. First couple albums, incredible. I don't know. Somehow I thought

00:27:41.440 --> 00:28:07.920
this argument was going to be a little more incendiary. But that's what I wanted to ask you. Would you take out a band? No. No. I would just add. But if you had to say George's Big Four. It would still be those four bands, but I might even expand seven to eight and include Death Angel. So do you think Death Angel got passed over? Definitely.

00:28:11.460 --> 00:28:41.400
a while from the scene you know the band was in a bus accident some of the members were pretty badly injured there were financial problems that resulted from that accident and so the band broke up for a number of years but they've definitely come back with a vengeance in the last few years and do you think what were the factors that you can think of why it was the big four that maybe may have left off the testament in the overkill it's probably money you think sure you know

00:28:41.440 --> 00:29:10.960
Those are the bands that made the most money in the 80s. I thought that Testedunit was bigger than Anthrax, personally. I think Anthrax was pretty big. Definitely more commercially viable. But didn't all those bands, as the 90s went on, except your Megadeth and Metallica, didn't they really kind of peak? And then they both kind of had a little fall? Well, other than Metallica, to lesser,

00:29:11.440 --> 00:29:41.400
and then slayer they all kind of tanked off at some point nobody can go and go and go and never have a bad album or or whatever particularly when you know grunge came along and changed most everything in terms of metal i think also i'm surprised too that the big four is not exclusive to the bay area bands well because you take out anthrax sure and then you you put uh testament yes and exodus

00:29:42.240 --> 00:30:11.000
Now, what's the thing? Even Death Angel. Now, I ask you about Death Angel. What was the problem with Exodus then? That they, they, and again, there's no problem with any of these because they've all been very successful bands. Sure. I don't know. I guess somebody felt four was a nice round number, maybe. Where, in your eyes, does Exodus, did they miss the mark around that time? Nope. The first album, Bonded by Blood, is a true classic of the era. But then,

00:30:11.440 --> 00:30:40.500
They changed singers. They got Zitro. But you know, I mean, when Fabulous Disaster came out, Toxic Waltz was kind of a big deal. I know some people look at it as kind of cheesy now, but I thought it was pretty damn awesome back in the early days of the metal pit. But yeah, these bands just didn't take off quite as much, but I'm not basing my big seven on financial gain and success. I'm talking purely from a inspirational,

00:30:42.080 --> 00:30:49.600
of what they did for the scene and for metal and how influential they were on bands coming up.

00:30:49.920 --> 00:30:57.480
Now, okay, if you can pick seven, could you get a big ten? Could you pick three more bands to finish off that?

00:30:57.810 --> 00:31:03.640
Well, Death Angel would make eight. I'd have to give that a little more thought.

00:31:04.440 --> 00:31:08.400
I don't want to put you on the spot. I was just curious if you could make ten bands.

00:31:08.660 --> 00:31:37.780
10 is a nice number to go for. And I'd like to fill that in. Make like a little big 10 fest. Yeah. Forget football, big 10 metal. Yes. And that brings me to another point today. I woke up today was browsing, you know, the sites and I saw a funny write up article from metal sucks and was written by Sergeant D and he wrote the article from the stormtroopers of death. He wrote the article.

00:31:38.640 --> 00:32:08.600
the best subgenre of metal. And he listed some genres here, like dinosaur metal, classic rock, thrash metal, old school death metal, melodic death metal, black metal, power metal, grindcore, neo thrash, brutal death metal, proto thrash. And he put new metal with solos. And they put trendy hipster shit like sun and death haven. And I just quickly wanted to get your take on it. I know I'm putting you on the spot right now.

00:32:08.660 --> 00:32:38.620
Now, if you had to say, what is the best subgenre of metal? Depends on what I'm listening to at the time. Doom is a big thing for me. Black metal, death metal. Death metal used to be, as I've been saying a lot lately, death metal is kind of stagnating. Thrash, to a lesser extent. Obviously in the 80s, I lived for thrash. To make it a comeback. Yeah, but these days, like Doom, stoner, retro sounding metal like that is cool. I guess no set of

00:32:38.660 --> 00:32:44.000
I didn't say power metal anywhere no you didn't I was hanging on I have a few albums you know like

00:32:44.080 --> 00:33:08.620
power wolf I really dig those guys but yeah I tend to look for doom death doom funeral doom black metal atmospheric black metal things like that and that's a thing is too is that you know your subgenres is gonna be you know the doom and stuff like that because I guess you know just like you said

00:33:08.620 --> 00:33:37.180
other genre to you. You've heard and played out, stuff like that, in your opinion. But, see, that question could go both ways. If you're asking that to someone who's just new to metal. Yes, what are your subgenres? My favorite subgenre of metal? Boy, I may get booted off the podcast by listeners here, but I'm a big parametal guy, pussy. I am. I am a big parametal guy. Nothing wrong with that. Yes, there is. It's cheesy.

00:33:38.640 --> 00:34:08.600
It's nerdy, it's geeky. That's cool. I really need to get back into more power metal bands. You mentioned Hammerfall recently, and I was like, man, I need to go back and listen to Glory to the Brave. Glory to the Brave. Glory to the Brave, yes. See, it's been so long, I can't even get the album title right. But, I don't even know what genre put to them. Maybe just, you know, true, pure metal. True metal. I'm a big Lamb of God fan. Bands that you just put that in, it's just

00:34:08.700 --> 00:34:38.460
It's just pure metal like that to me is my favorite subgenre. But I thought that was an interesting article. I just wanted to get your opinion of that. Sure. Yeah, well, I mean, those are my favorite genres right now, subgenres. It's funny. It seems that, you know, the time that I've been a metalhead, the wave of genres really, I mean, I was really getting big into metal again, early 2000, you know, 98, 99. That's when you started seeing the melodic death metal bands. Oh, yeah.

00:34:38.639 --> 00:35:07.060
Like At The Gates and stuff. Yes. In Flames. It was really blowing. New At The Gates album coming out. I'm not sure when, but this year I'm pretty sure. So can't wait for that. You see the wave of these sub-genre bands. The sub-genre, one band starts to make it big, and then you start to see that genre, I've noticed, really starts to take off. Yeah, even in metal there's trends. Like you started to see Ghost. Yeah. The sound that Ghost put out,

00:35:08.760 --> 00:35:38.580
up. And you look at the bands that are kind of putting out that ghost sound. Yeah. They did something. Interestingly, you could call it different, but it's already been done. But they brought something. They dug something up, dusted it off and said, hey, what about this? And everybody else was like, yeah, yeah, that's good. That's good. Let's start doing that, too. And so now you've got all this retro metal. And being that I like Doom, I was instantly on the first ghost album.

00:35:40.480 --> 00:36:07.300
That caught on so much that now there's a bunch of crappy bands doing the same thing. But who knows what the next trend will be. It's interesting to see the genres rise and fall, the subgenres of metal. Metal's always going to be here, but you see the subgenres of metal. It's what keeps us fresh, keeps us alive. I remember four or five years ago, Toxic Holocaust, then the Thrash revival.

00:36:08.640 --> 00:36:37.720
Gain and Steam. Yeah, like Municipal Waste. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Bonded by Blood the Band, not the album. Yeah, Warbringer was kind of taking that sound. Warbringer, oh my god, yeah. Yeah, I remember you were really excited when you heard that their sounds kind of changed some, but that Evile. Yes, Evile. Sort of Metallica-ish, but really cool modern thrash. Mm-hmm. And so, it was just interesting. Art Quest on.

00:36:38.640 --> 00:37:08.600
today. Speaking of metal sucks, we've been having a little bit of back and forth conversation with some friends of yours. Yes, we have. Would you like to say hi to them? To Chuck and Godless. Hello. We hope you're listening again. And the battle's on. Bring it. Yes, bring it on, brother. They mentioned bolt thrower. That earned a little extra respect for me. I hated having

00:37:08.640 --> 00:37:08.940
to kill you.

00:37:11.140 --> 00:37:11.540
So with that.

00:37:11.600 --> 00:37:12.120
Good job, Wesley.

00:37:13.620 --> 00:37:14.140
See you in the morning.

00:37:14.300 --> 00:37:15.720
Most likely kill you in the morning.

00:37:16.020 --> 00:37:16.680
Something like that.

00:37:16.730 --> 00:37:16.860
Yeah.

00:37:17.180 --> 00:37:17.260
Anyway.

00:37:18.380 --> 00:37:20.280
So with that, let's go into our classic albums.

00:37:20.740 --> 00:37:20.840
Yep.

00:37:20.920 --> 00:37:24.440
It's funny that you just say both are because that's what I came in here today.

00:37:24.760 --> 00:37:25.060
Nice.

00:37:25.300 --> 00:37:26.580
That was my classic.

00:37:28.400 --> 00:37:31.320
Their album, For Victory.

00:37:31.720 --> 00:37:32.280
For Victory.

00:37:32.620 --> 00:37:36.060
Coming out on vinyl reissue end of the month, I believe.

00:37:36.420 --> 00:37:36.480
Yep.

00:37:36.860 --> 00:37:38.040
Or was it released in 94?

00:37:38.300 --> 00:38:07.720
Okay. Classic bull thrower. Oh, yeah. That's definitely my favorite. It's, you know, death metal. I have a hard time listening to a lot of death metal because when I listen to my death metal, I like to, I like more of the Michael Ackerfeld style of being able to hear the words that the death metal vocalist is saying. Enunciation. That's it. Exactly. And instead of just, yeah.

00:38:07.820 --> 00:38:35.860
I just said three sentences. Exactly. And even when you're reading the lyrics, you look at it, you're like, is this hieroglyphics? If you're reading the lyrics and listening to the vocals and you still can't make out a single word, there's a problem. Because they're not really saying those words. Eh, whatever. So this Bolt Thrower album, to me, is just a classic death metal album.

00:38:37.840 --> 00:39:06.860
and identifiable sound. Bolt Thrower comes on the radio. You'll even have to hear any singing. You hear some of that riffage and you're like, dude, Bolt Thrower. You once described Bolt Thrower to me. We grabbed a landmine marathon show when we saw Warbringer. And it's funny with the first couple albums from Bolt Thrower being released by Games Workshop. You have that Warhammer 40k reference to Space Marines. And you said this description to me and it rings so true. You said,

00:39:07.840 --> 00:39:37.480
If you picture that slow rolling tank. Yeah. You know, chugging across the battlefield, just slowly crushing all. That's the kind of sound that bolt thrower is. That's the bolt thrower sound. I was going to bring up the Games Workshop thing because back in the day, Bolt Thrower was originally released by Games Workshop, who make role-playing games. They first came to my attention when my friend Josh, also a big metal fan and role-player, told me about this band that was released by Games Workshop.

00:39:37.540 --> 00:40:06.920
And I was like, that's weird. But, you know, checked it out and bull thrower. Never look back. Yep. In battle, there is no law. My album this week, my classic, if you will, is the third album from Rotting Christ, Triarchy of the Lost Lovers. This album came out in 1996, so technically it's not quite a classic yet. It's only 18 years old. But the band has been around for over 20 years, so I'm grandfathering the album in.

00:40:06.980 --> 00:40:36.800
First two albums, very, they started off as a real black metal band, really raw and evil. And they evolved relatively quickly into something I like to think is unique. And by their third album, Triarchy of the Lost Lovers, the music was a little more, it was slower, melodic, not in a like pretty melodic sort of way, but it wasn't very black metal sounding.

00:40:37.360 --> 00:41:06.840
And yet the vocals were still quite harsh in a pseudo black metal sort of way. It's kind of hard to describe. I mean, it wasn't death metal. It wasn't, you know, it was a little, maybe it was, they were really harsh anyway. And at the time when I first bought the album, I bought it when it first came out. I believe I picked it up back at that old store that we used to go to record and tape traders back when they were in business. It was right after I moved to Maryland from Michigan. And I picked that up and I really dug the music.

00:41:06.960 --> 00:41:36.460
But at the time, I was like, I don't know about these lyrics. Not the lyrics, but the vocals. Because I was still just getting into bands like Cradle of Filth and stuff like that at the time. So I had a little bit of trouble with the vocals getting into the band. But then a few years later, I went back and rediscovered them. And the funny thing is, every album that came out after this one, I bought it. Even if I wasn't quite a fan yet, I was like, at some point, I'm going to be a fan. I know this. And so I bought the album.

00:41:36.980 --> 00:42:06.660
And as time went on, the band got a little more gothic, a little more... The vocals were always still harsh, but the songs themselves became more lush and intricate and, well, cool. But for me, the first album... Not the first album. My first album, Triarchy of the Lost Lovers, is a good place to start with Rotting Christ. Where are they from? Greece. And you know what?

00:42:07.000 --> 00:42:36.880
Ticks me off. Dave Mustaine. Megadeth. I love Megadeth music. Did he say something stupid? He got them kicked off a show in their own country. They were playing some festival in Greece. Megadeth was headlining. Dave, born again Christian. They, rotting Christ. I don't know if he refused to play the show or what, but he got them kicked off a show in their own country. How rude.

00:42:36.980 --> 00:43:06.940
Yeah, very. Very. I like a lot of Dave's music, but I don't like a lot of the things that come out of his mouth. He's really been getting a little wacky lately. Yeah. I'm no big, huge fan of Obama either, but cuckoo. Cuckoo. All right. I think we're getting ready to wrap things up here.
